Just love this place!! Seaview Cottage Latheron
The Falls of Shin visitor attraction is about a 1hr 15min drive from Seaview Cottage Latheron. Its famous for being one of the best places in Scotland to view salmon leaping upstream. Free admission and parking.
Follow the winding road up through Achany Glen, alongside the meandering River Shin to an opening in the pine forest where the majestic Atlantic salmon leap up the thundering falls in a valiant attempt to get back up stream.
Every year throughout the summer, the fish return from the open ocean, swimming up the Dornoch Firth and the Kyle of Sutherland to try to reach further up the River Shin to where they were spawned. However, before they reach their destination they must pass the powerful torrent of water at the Falls.
Standing on the viewing platform you can watch the salmon as they try to leap clear of the water. Some manage to pass on their first attempt while others have to jump again and again. From the platform there are also fine views both up and down the River Shin, a popular fishing destination in the North of Scotland. (The best time to spot the salmon is between May – September.)
Loch Fleet is a coastal reserve on the north-east coast of Scotland, close to the community of Golspie.
At low tide, Loch Fleet NNR’s harbour seals are one of the many visitor highlights. The seal watch-point, on the south side of the loch with its purpose built extended layby and interpretative information, can be enjoyed at any time and affords visitors with panoramic views across Loch Fleet. It provides one of the most accessible and best views of seals in Sutherland.
We have been today and it was high tide, we were able see a few seals bobbing about, but not as many as you see at low tide
These Stags were seen in Helmsdale which is about 20 minute drive from Seaview Cottage Latheron. Stags are also seen around the corner from the cottage on the A9 road to Thurso. Red Deer are the largest of the UK's resident deer species. Their impressive autumn rut is a top British wildlife spectacle, particularly familiar in Scotland where red deer are widespread and common. During the rut, mature stags invest much time and effort into competing with other males for access to females. Roaring contests and parallel walking allow males to size each other up without violence. However, conflict can soon escalate between evenly matched stags leading to serious injuries and even death.
Seal spotting at The Stacks. The Duncansby Stacks is about a 35 minute drive from Seaview Cottage Latheron They lie just off the shore of Duncansby Head on the most northeastern point of mainland Britain. These towering sea stacks are believed to have stood in this position for the last 6000 years, slowly eroding away due to the raw power of the North Sea. The small bay by The Stacks had quite a large seal colony today. Well worth a visit is you are doing the NC500 or stopping at our cottage.
