Just a couple miles east of Crescent City is the unpaved, very scenic stretch of Howland Hill Road. It traverses through the heart of the towering old-growth redwoods in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.

Featuring colossal coastal redwoods, California's last undammed river and an old historic road, it is 10 miles long. With many pullouts and trailheads, this road offers an intimate experience with the park's monolith trees.

What do you call it when it rains ducks and geese?

Fowl Weather!

The Humboldt Lagoons complex is a vital source for all animals big and small, with or without wings! During the fall and winter it isn't uncommon to see Aleutian Cackling Geese or Cinnamon Teal Ducks, who use our lagoons as stops in the great Pacific Flyway! You can learn about these animals and more at the Stone Lagoon guided tours, now moved to Fridays! Come join the winter fun at Humboldt Lagoons State Park!

What are you doing tomorrow?

Tomorrow is Black Friday when mad rushes of people storm stores for the best deals.

Instead of being crushed under an onslaught of holiday shoppers, why not and enjoy Green Friday in one of the greenest places on Earth?! Redwood National and State Parks has hundreds of miles of trails to explore and enjoy. Then, if you are still feeling the shopping itch, you might find a unique item at one of our visitor center bookstores. Please note that all profits from such purchases go back to supporting your parks.

First Saturday of the month you can bike or walk Newton Drury Scenic parkway

Welcome back to Hike and Bike on the Newton B. Drury scenic parkway!

The Newton B. Drury scenic parkway in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is closed to any motorized vehicles the first Saturday of the month for Hike and Bike Day. This special event runs October - May to give park visitors the opportunity to safely hike, bike, skate, and walk leashed pets along the ten-mile scenic drive through the redwoods!

We will now allow visitors to use e-bikes on the parkway during Hike and Bike day. E-bike users must comply with a speed limit of 20 mph (typically a Type 1 or Type 2 e-bike). Anyone in violation of this speed limit and who is creating an unsafe environment for other recreational users will be asked to leave. Continued violations of this speed limit may cause management to remove the use of e-bikes on Hike and Bike days in the future.

Access to the Prairie Creek Visitor Center and Elk Prairie Campground will not be affected. To reach the visitor center and the campground, use the southern entrance of the Newton B. Drury scenic parkway (Exit 753). The parkway will close Friday afternoon and reopen Sunday morning after road conditions have been assessed by park law enforcement.

Huckleberries are a family favorite around here. Yummy

Berries abound at Redwood! While you are prohibited from harvesting most things in the park, berries are one of the exceptions, as stated in the Superintendent’s Compendium on things you can gather.
“All species of berries (one gallon per person per day) and apples (five apples per person per day)”

These are Black huckleberries, which are ripening in the Redwoods' understory. They are tart and tasty and make nice treats when you find them on your hike. Also, at this time of year, there are abundant blackberries. Feel free to enjoy them as well.

UPDATE: Mill Creek and Jedediah Smith Campgrounds will be closed by tomorrow (8/20) morning through Friday 8/25 due to power outage and other conditions.

Planning ahead for your trip to the redwoods just became more important! The park is currently experiencing some closures in the northern area due to a wildfire burning incredibly close to Highway 199.
* Hiouchi Visitor Center and Crescent City Information Center are closed due to fire-related power outages.
* Lagoon Creek Day Use Area is closed due to fire-related power outages.
* Highway 199 is closed; travelers need to use an alternate route.
* Del Norte County is without power due to the fire burning on Hwy 199. This includes Klamath, Crescent City, and Hiouchi.

Plan ahead and keep current on the park's current conditions by visiting the park's website.

The Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center and Prairie Creek Visitor Center in the park's southern area remain open.

Nursery logs!

Even though they're dead, they still serve a purpose and have a way of giving back to the forest for centuries to come! The chemistry of redwoods (tannic acids) allows this species to repel termites, wood-boring beetles, bacteria and fungi. That enables them to decompose very slowly. How slowly? Our most enormous logs can take up to 800 years to disappear. During that time, they store water and carbon and provide nutrients to the other plants that colonize them as they break down.

Redwood logs act as a time capsule: Complex nursery logs are one of the clues that you are indeed in an old-growth forest.

Stay far away from the Wild Elk

Stay far away from the Wild Elk

How close is too close? Anything less than 75 feet!

Visitors should always maintain a healthy distance from our wild Roosevelt elk, no matter what time of year. May and June, however, are calving season. This is when our elk cows are extra protective of their newborns. We at the parks understand visitors would love to get that perfect picture of these magnificent animals, but we also want everyone to be safe. Additionally, we don't want to stress out the mamas and their babies. Female elk in the park have been documented charging visitors from 50 feet away. A kick with their sharp hooves can cause serious injury. Since elk can run upwards of 35 mph, the only safe retreat for a human may be to climb a tree, a particular activity we do not endorse.

If you are out to get that perfect photo, please use a telephoto lens. Stay safe, keep your distance, and you won't be caught in such a dangerous situation!
