Want to join me on a tour to Cuba this winter?
I am planning to lead two groups this winter - tentatively one from January 17-24, and one from January 25-February 1. Both will include the option of an additional day in Havana.
This time around I plan to start the tours in Havana, spend a couple of days exploring Viñales in western Cuba, and then take a road trip to Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and Santa Clara – with some beach time and maybe a visit to a Slow Food eco farm along the way.

First night in Havana with my latest group of travelers. The servers at Havana Blues are all actors from Cuban movies and television. This waiter does a pretty decent rendition of Patsy Cline 's "Crazy." Food is pretty good, too.

Anybody interested in a trip to Cuba this winter?
I love to travel, and I prefer to spend my travel dollars in places where my money can make a real difference in the lives of people who are struggling.
Cuba fits the bill perfectly - my friends in Cuba tell me that they are going through very hard times, with many basic foods and medications unavailable or unaffordable.
When Carol and I traveled to Cuba two years ago, we had one of our most memorable trips ever. We were captivated by the sights and sounds - the dilapidated grandeur of old Havana, the parade of classic American cars, the music everywhere - but the most memorable part of our trip was the people we met.
People were living through hard times, but they welcomed us with great warmth and hospitality. We stuffed our luggage with basic medications that were in short supply, which our friends were happy to get.
To comply with US Treasury Department sanctions, we stayed in private homes - booked through AirBnB, and ate at privately owned restaurants. Every day, we signed up for a different experience or tour with a local guide - a walk through the historic city of Trinidad, a visit to an organic farm, a tasting of rum and ci**rs, all booked through AirBnB.
Over breakfast, and on our walking tours, we got to know our hosts and guides, and learned about the struggles that they faced.
