Hi,

The website is down temporarily. Please check back later. We will do our best to communicate when it is clear.

29/04/2017

Orders are open. Please keep checking back as producers add new items everyday!
Think about picking up some plants to start your backyard gardens!

Orders close tonight at midnight for pick up this Thursday!

Fun fact: There are 60 dozen eggs still available for purchase! Does anyone remember when eggs were gone by 6am on the day orders opened? I do, all too well... Hens lay less during the winter because of the cold and we had a lot less egg producers in previous years. To see this many eggs left for sale today tells me two things: our old and new producers (and their feathered ladies) have really stepped up production and SPRING IS COMING! Enjoy the warm weather this week friends. See you on Thursday! ~Stacey Lee (one of the page moderators)

Is your CSA box really from a CSA? Is the veggie you just bought really grown by the farmer you bought it from? Did your "certified organic" apple grow nearby or hundreds of miles away? Check out this article which cautions local food customers about the difficulty of truly knowing where your food comes from & whether or not your purchases are supporting your local farmers. If nothing else, it makes you think about what kind of "local" food is important to you.
Of course, we at MLFC think that the transparency that comes about by
* requiring our producer/members to describe their growing practices
* by verifying those practices during site visits
* by moving the items from farm to you in one day &
* by not allowing reselling
makes our co-op unique & alleviates some of the confusion discussed in the article.

As demand for local and organic produce has ballooned in the last five years, so have other ideas for connecting farmers to customers.

Westminster’s Agricultural Commission
Presents
The 2016 Backyard Growing Series
3rd Tuesdays, January – April, 6:30-7:30pm–Free and Open to the Public

Eloranta Room, Forbush Memorial Library, Westminster, MA
A four part series answering some of the many questions
asked at the Westminster Farmers’ Market.

Come find some answers!

Tuesday, January 19: Making Soap: Ancient skill modern art

Soap making has been around for over 4000 years – truly an ancient and essential skill! How else would we get clean enough to go out in public? Soap making is also a modern craft and Terri Steiner of Elzire’s Acres Goat Milk Soap in Princeton, MA is going to walk us through the basics. She’ll outline the history of soap and then go through the steps of making soap from her own goat herd’s milk along with special ingredients (like oils, clays and fragrances) that make soap making into an art as well as a craft. Real soap from real ingredients can make your skin feel fantastic. Come and learn how to do it!

Reserve these dates: February 16, March 15, and April 19 for the rest of the series. Topics to include: Goats for land/invasive clearing, milk and meat; Raising Bees to be Healthy; and Hoop Houses for Season Extension and Modification.

For more information: Contact M.L. Altobelli [email protected]
and put “backyard” in the subject line

Little White Goat Farm was a recipient of one of 25 grants awarded to Massachusetts farmers to implement renewable energy systems and improve energy efficiency on farms; awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR).

Also, Tom Colyer, owner of Greenwood Hill Farm in Hubbardston, MA, has been named by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack to the 2016 Lamb Promotion, Research and Information Board. More work for Tom but nice to be recognized.

Everyone should check out the article about Nashoba Valley Extracts in the recent issue of Edible Boston http://www.edibleboston.com/nashoba-valley-extract-co/

Holiday season is here so make sure to stock up on everything you need for your entertaining. We now have our own Mass Local Food Cookbook for sale; a good holiday gift! All recipes were submitted by our members and it is full of helpful hints.

Each bag is enough for a 12-14 lb turkey.
