Tangalle Beach Tangalle Beach is pristine and among Sri Lanka’s longest, but it’s also the eastern limit in terms of beaches worth visiting on the south coast, so it sees less tourists than most. It is still gradually building back up after being hit hard by the 2004 tsunami, but Tangalle has a lovely, laid-back vibe that’s perfect for a few relaxing days.

Dikwella Beach There’s no surfing here, but it’s the perfect place to claim a patch of sand for the day and just relax. Verse Collective is the go-to, both for food and accommodation. It’s built for digital nomads, so if you have some nagging work to do, do it here.

Climb the Dondra Lighthouse Beautifully surrounded by palm trees and hugged by two beaches, it’s a breathtaking vantage point. You used to be able to just show up and climb it, but the rules changed, and now you have to get permission from the local authorities. The easiest way to do this is through the navy in Galle. It’s worth the time spent to get it approved. But if you can’t be bothered, it’s still worth a visit to look at from the ground.

Visit Sri Lanka’s Last Rain Forest The Sinharaja Forest Reserve is the last rain forest left in a country that was once full of them. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and packs a lot into its 34 square miles; half of Sri Lanka’s endemic mammals and butterflies, as well as around two-thirds of its endemic trees, all call this rain forest home. There’s also a few leopards and elephants in the mix. While here, stay at the Rainforest Eco Lodge.

Kanto, Japan Year after year Japan always seems to find a way to surprise and delight us—it’s like the Meryl Streep of destinations, constantly out-performing the competition, and even one-upping itself. We feel repeatedly compelled to honor the Land of the Rising Sun because every new development—be it a luxury hotel, restaurant, or even a bullet train link—is always executed with the greatest of care. And 2020 is no different, especially with the impending Summer Olympics being held in Tokyo.

Uruguay Ed Paine of Last Frontiers endorses Uruguay as the perfect South American country for those short on time; “Everything is within reach, from small boutique wineries (the Tannat grape, originally from France, has been adopted as the national grape and has a soft blackberry flavor) to estancias, the ranches responsible for some of the tastiest steaks in the world, all from grass-fed cattle. The sunny capital, Montevideo, is relaxed, peaceful, and rightly famous for its long beaches, art deco architecture, and wonderful restaurants.”

Antarctica “It was in 1820 that Nathanial Palmer headed south to the edge of the earth on a 47-foot sloop named Hero on a sealing expedition and laid claim to the discovery of Antarctica,” remarks George Morgan-Grenville, Founder & CEO of Red Savannah. And now, 200 years later, vast swaths of the polar region have begun to melt and recess in the face of rising global temperatures. A slew of new expedition-class vessels have been thusly deployed to take travelers back to the end of the world for one last look before it threatens to disappear.

Puglia, Italy Puglia, the heel of Italy’s stylish boot, has a wonderfully distinct allure stemming from its rural landscape and patchwork past of Norman, Spanish, Greek, and Byzantine influences. The region is quickly rivaling Tuscany’s gourmet title, offering a glimpse into true Italian traditions and values.

Amsterdam, Netherlands Across its pretty alleyways, broadly beautiful canals, and Hanseatic streets, there is ample evidence why Van Gogh found such inspiration from his homeland’s charming capital. This is a world of civility, confidence and culture—from the trendily handsome Nine Streets neighborhood to the artful drama of the Rijksmuseum—where you can have close encounters with the works of Rembrandt and Vermeer. A city made famous (and powerful) by European trade during its 17th century Golden Age, Amsterdam is a true treasure box of gilded canal-side buildings, ornamental facades, and beautifully detailed churches. Its exquisite canal houses and hotels also offer much to those who have a taste for more modern design.

Seville, Spain Much is spoken about Barcelona and Madrid (and with good reason), but when it comes to glamorous urban beauty, Seville holds the crown. Historically, its message has been: Keep the flame of tradition alive. But traditions can become stultifying. In recent years, however, this placid city has found a way to pair its jumbled, spire-thick skyline and darling courtyards with modern twists on the classics. Elegant, grand hotels—those of the gilded golden age—and moody tabernas hold sway alongside chic cocktail bars and modern music venues. Sun-soaked, small, and steeped in atmosphere, Seville’s Gothic and Renaissance charm has made it one of Spain’s hottest new urban destinations.
