Legend says that there used to be a huge problem of rats in Jerusalem’s Old City. According to the stories, the British brought in the cats to take care of the rats. Now the cats have taken over the Old City. Perhaps next we will have to bring in mountain lions to take care of the cats 😳 @ Jerusalem, Israel
An update from Silvie Yogev on her amazing project!
We love this cool project!
One of my favorite activities in Israel is visiting the shuk. You find these markets all over Israel. Tasting the food in Machane Yehuda in Jerusalem, checking out the spices and Armenian pottery in Jerusalem's Old City, looking for antiques in Jaffa’s Shuk Hapishpishim. Whether I am going with family or introducing a tour group to these experiences, it is one of those activities that epitomizes the Israel experience.
And it is the inspiration for a new project we have launched together with a group of Israeli tour guides. Our virtual Shuk(market) will allow you to sample all that Israel has to offer even while the Covid-19 pandemic prevents you from being here in person.
So many of you have taken part in the virtual tours we have been offering. This Shuk will expand your access to the incredible experiences being curated by Israel’s best guides. Whether your interests are in history, culture, food, or the arts, we will have experiences that are right for you. And we will be adding new tours regularly.
Best of all, these tours use a “pay what you wish” model meaning there is no minimum amount to participate. We understand the challenging economic times we are living in. We believe that after experiencing the content, you will find value in it. And, if you do, we hope you will support this project at a level that is comfortable for you.
PLEASE SHARE. Help us get the word out.

It’s like Christmas in July here in the Old City. @ Jerusalem Santa House
Issa is the name. Basketball is the game.
Jerusalem is the fame. PEACE is the aim.

Just walked in this amazing patisserie by the New Gate! Yummmmmm. And we agree, that’s definitely the first rule of dieting!

We love the symbolism of the hamsa. The Hamsa represents blessings, power and strength. It is meant to provide protection, and with fingers closed, to bring good luck. This one is from our graffiti capital- Tel Aviv. Maybe it will bring us all some much needed luck and protection!! 🎨
Have you got the travel bug but can't go anywhere? So do we! Join us for some virtual touring this week, using street-view technology so you will feel like you are walking through the paths and alleyways along with us.

Every time we visit the amazing subterranean city of Maresha, we try to guess what those niches were used for. The archaeologists call it a columbarium, from the Latin word for “pigeon” (Columba). Here’s the thing.. most of these rooms are RIGHT NEXT to a water cistern. As in right next to the water source! So it seems REALLY unlikely that they would have been using the space for super dirty pigeons so close to the water. 🤷♀️. So what WAS it used for? Many theories have come up, but we remain skeptics in spite of what the archaeologists say. 2nd pic is from the staircase of the nearby water cistern. We absolutely love Maresha, a 2,200 year Old City with these incredible basement rooms. @ Tel Maresha Caves

A few months ago we had an argument about whether this is the best Knafeh in Israel! It’s a classic from Jaffar Sweets in the Muslim Quarter. It’s made of sweet cheese, tiny pastry filaments, pistachios, sugar water and a healthy dose of orange food coloring. 🤪 Yum!

At the top of that alleyway is a door that leads to a small shop. Hidden behind it is an amazing tiny factory making tehina. Swipe left for the second pic to see more. The basalt stones that grind the tehina have been in use for more than 250 years!! This family owned shop has been in the Muslim quarter for many generations making all sorts of tehina. Our favorite is the roasted kind, especially mixed with their special grape syrup. “HiddenGems @ Muslim Quarter
