ACHTUNG - ATTENZIONE - Christmas idea and self promotion! Do you have a favourite photo of your pet? Here are my favourite ones. It is not too late (but soon) to send me your Blue Print order of your favourite pet photo to receive it for Christmas. Is that maybe the present missing? Of course also a dog or fish or horse (who do I forget ??) is welcomed ;)

ST NIKOLAUS AND KRAMPUS - AN ALPINE CHRISTMAS DUO! 6th of December is for many of us the day where Christmas period childhood memories come alive!
No matter where I am and what I do, for example last year sharing this day with my Rick Steves group in Salzburg in Austria, the memories of excitement of that day come back. That year the night of the 5th of December the whole group of adults put their shoes in front of the hotel room doors and waited patiently until the next morning. SANKT NIKOLAUS had received letters about all of them and was told that they were good last year and so he filled their shoes with goodies.
Not one needed to be reminded to do better next year by the KRAMPUS, the counter part of good ST NIKOLAUS. The KRAMPUS visits the children that were not good and chases them through the streets (this is an Alpine tradition and a figure we are particular familiar with in Bavaria, Tyrol and other areas in the Alps)
Our group had the chance though to participate at the KRAMPUS run and to admire the hand made masks and to understand better my childhood trauma of the Krampus ;)
The photo captions lead you through some stories.
I hope you enjoy and wish you a wonderful sunday 2nd Advent.

Today is first Advent Sunday, the first candle on the wreath is lit up. Vivid childhood memories of my home town Munich at Christmas time come back ... Did you have a wreath at home?..
And for others it is Santons ... Do you know Santons? If you want to know why in Provence we have a baker, a wine maker, a drummer, a grand father, a goose and many more "every day life Provencals" flocking in and through Nativity scenes of the regions homes, then join Denis and me tomorrow (30th of November 9AM (PCT)) for a (pre recorded) video on the making of SANTONS, the traditional Christmas clay figures of Provence.

I miss strolling the Christmas markets this year! I miss huddling close together with my friends in one of the gemuetliche chalets, with cold hands, feets and nose, while holding a warm cup of Gluehwein in my hand. I miss tasting together with my groups my way through one two three Lebkuchen and other cookies to find our favorite ones on the markets!
Here an idea - it's not the same but what is the same this year?! And so why not give it a go and check out some new gift ideas for your Christmas 2020 at my Chriskindlmarket ?
As you can see below - gift orders are starting to go out to be with you just in time !!

Greetings from times of "Lock down #2 in Avignon" with only 1km and 1 hour time to spend outside per day.
So, I thought I'll take you through my neighbourhood in Avignon. I hope you enjoy chatting with the local street construction workers. We will buy a lottery ticket and scratch cards and try our luck winning. And I'd like to introduce you to my friend and neighbourhood baker Frederic, who we will visit soon again to learn more about apple tarts and more.
If you are not convinced that I will win the lottery, feel free to visit my website https://nomadsview.com and hopefully you find some of my photography or print for you to purchase or maybe you start to look for some Christmas presents... All support is welcome!!
I hope to guide you soon again further through the beauty that surrounds us.

Glad to work for this man!
The challenges and problems have not gone away yesterday but new ways of approaching them have opened up. Intelligence, patience, compassion and lots of courage and strength is now needed from everyone for the tasks ahead and good luck lining the road.
I hope and believe that this is a step in the direction to be back on the road again soon(er), to guide with and for Rick and our groups and travelers here in Europe!

This has been a rough year. For many of us, it’s been the most challenging of our entire lives. But this morning, we finally got news of a brighter future. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are moving into the White House.

It’s been a hard-fought, and unprecedentedly ugly, campaign season. But I have supported Joe and Kamala because I am inspired by their persistence in keeping a hopeful eye to the future, with a realistic and patient view of the present.
Rick Steves' Europe has a full slate of European tours all locked, loaded, and ready to book for 2021. But we’re holding off on taking sign-ups...because, like the president-elect (and unlike the president-unelect), we recognize that we’re not yet out of the woods of this pandemic. Anyone who knows me can tell you that I am not a patient person. But, like so many other things in 2020, being patient is something I am discovering for the first time...and I find that patience feels right.

COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are going up across the USA. And they’re going up across Europe, too. Europe is responding thoughtfully, with tightening restrictions and strong public messaging. America’s response has — so far — been no response at all…or flat out denial. If we want to get traveling in 2021, we have to hunker down and be safe over the next few months. Obviously, we all want our economy to be open and to thrive. Artful, smart, and temporary degrees of “shut down” may well be our best path to that open and thriving economy. Our soon-to-be-former president has made no indication of understanding that. But our next president certainly does. And that’s just one of many reasons I’m happy with the results of this election. And why, if you’re hoping to go to Europe any time soon, you should be, too.

One more note: I am sure many of you disagree with my politics — and I may disagree with yours. But, if you follow me on Facebook, I assume we are united by a love of travel. If you feel I’ve abused my “bully pulpit” the last month or so, I hope you’ll understand it’s because I love this country and desperately want to see us back on an equal footing with the rest of our planet. Every election, I have a strong preference of candidate — though normally I respect the other guy. (And, it must be noted, it’s always been a guy.) But this year, it was personal. I felt that supporting the Biden/Harris ticket was a nonpartisan act of patriotism. It was for the resilient (yet, as we’ve learned, not indestructible) ideals of what America stands for — ideals that inspire lovers of freedom and democracy and justice throughout the rest of the world.

While millions more voted for Biden, about 48% of our country did vote for Trump. One of my many dreams for 2021 is that the GOP can be reclaimed from the hateful, chaotic fringe of the Trump movement and restore respect and civility to our national discourse. Even as a proud Democrat, I have always respected Republicans. (And, as I recently confessed, I even voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980.) I have many Republican friends who I consider good people, admirable patriots, and great travelers. We’ve always found plenty of common ground, even if we agree to disagree on the issues. And I’m hopeful that the Biden Administration will be a time of national reconciliation — an opportunity to recognize that far more unites us than divides us. That’s especially important during a crisis.

And so, congratulations to Joe and Kamala! Now...get to work. Keep us safe. Spearhead the building of a sustainable and just economy. Make us proud. With your leadership, America’s gonna keep on travelin’!

As some of you know, I am an Art historian and so I thought you may enjoy an Art Series that I would like to propose to you (bi)monthly as a live virtual event. I'd like to share and discuss with you some of my favorite works of art. This will be a subjective list of oeuvres from different periods, regions, styles and genres that I believe is "Art that lasts". I'd like to suggest ideas, observations and discuss your thoughts through comments and reviewing.
In the first episode (Monday, October 28th 9am (PST), I would like to have a look on a fantastically strange, powerful and intriguing altar piece created by Mathias Grünewald in the beginning of the 1500s. The Isenheimer Altarpiece!

VENICE, one of the most complex and surprising cities that I got to know along my tours. Also this year I was supposed to show the beauty and contrast of this city to our guests as their guide.
One of my personal highlights of all guiding is to enter San Marco square and let my group be welcomed by the space! The magic that can still reach many of us and to be able to share this moment with you is of undescribable joy and satisfaction. Serenissima, as Venice is also called, did its miracle again! Because almost non of us can go this year I am happy to share with you some of my images and thoughts of it. I hope you enjoy!

VENICE is for me one of the most living cities. What I mean with this is that Venice is ALIVE in itself. It is a city with a face, a living body.
VENICE is for me like a newborn - filled with power and strength to embrace life to come - ready to go!
We met VENICE celebrating, showing its achievements and decay with elegance and exhuberance.
We explored VENICE's secrets, shaded by darkness and mysterious fogs of experience.
We walked through VENICE, not trying to hide it's scars and wrinkles of time, lining the visible facades along the canals but making them part of the now.
We got to know maturing VENICE that needs to put energy in the invisible, under the surface, to continue a good life and to adapt to the now.

A visit to VENICE, after 20 years holds still the magic and excitement of a second date with a new LOVE!

I hope my photos can express some of these ideas and guide you to new ideas and thoughts about Venice.
If you like the picture check out my website where you can purchase them.

Bonjour and Hallo, I wanted to share with you a PART OF ME (besides being one of the "2020 Ricksteves Off Duty Guides"), that I set aside a little bit in the last months while we rode our bike on Provencal roads, did guided tours together of different sites, strolled charming villages, created Cyanotype blue prints, baked Pretzels, cooked stinging nettle soup, talked about German and Bavarian history and spoke about the beauty of German language ;) and it's Luftschlösser and "air castles".
I wanted to share with you today my website NOMAD'S VIEW.
I hope a visit of my PHOTOGRAPHY & PRINTS can take you traveling from home and invite you to check out my TRAVEL/GUIDING SERVICES for the time back out on the road. If you have questions about small customised group tours and/or my art works PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME.

WEDNESDAY - WINE's DAY
Today I went to Chateauneuf du Pape, village of 2200 people and home of the vineyards of one of the most prestigious wines of southern France.
Flip through the photos to learn and enjoy more about the wines.
As you see on the last pictures I just made it back to Avignon in time before sunset.
It was a great ride and visit and I hope you enjoyed our today's trip into the wine's. I am planning on doing a live wine tasting with some fun wine facts.
Anyone interested?
