In the early 20th century, the explosive sounds of Gong Kebyar could be heard across the island of Bali. A new genre during that time, it embraced a contemporary approach that has continued to evolve until the present day.
Gong Kebyar leave room for creative freedom in which the dynamic harmony of instruments found can shift from slow to fast, incorporating improvisation and syncopation that distinguishes it from the rules of its predecessor, such as Gong Gede.

The enchanting stairs and spiral rail of Sayan House Villas pay homage to Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003), a Sri Lankan architect who played a significant role in the tropical modernism movement.
This particular piece was inspired by the tower staircase in Bawa's Townhouse, which was built in the 1960s in his birth city of Colombo.

Colin Mcphee came to Bali to experience gamelan in its place of origin. The Canadian-American composer's passage to paradise in the 1930s turned into a plan for a permanent stay, and the rest is history.
He built a house in Sayan, mingled with the locals, constantly fed his curiosities of gamelan, immersed himself in the Bali music scene, and indulged in all that the island had to offer. McPhee would later document Bali through his books, including A House in Bali (1944) and Music in Bali (1966).
