A centerpiece of comfort at the Panoramic Suites or “Aalto’s Corner”, the yellow Soriana sofa was designed by the Italian couple Afra (1937–2011) and Tobia Scarpa in 1969.

Textures at the Villa No.21: Paper Lantern

To place light within paper as illumination—the paper lantern at The Sayan House Villa hangs gracefully in our Wash*tsu, or Japanese room.

Originating in ancient China during the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), these lanterns were traditionally crafted from rice paper and bamboo. When introduced to Japan in the 8th century, the paper lantern became both a source of light and a symbol of good luck and happiness, prominently featured in celebrations such as the Obon festival.

From Brussels, Belgium to Bali, Indonesia, artist Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur (1880–1958) found a home on the island alongside the love of his life, the Legong dancer Ni Nyoman Pollok (1917–1985).

Capturing the romance of Balinese daily life in vibrant colors, Le Mayeur painted people and places with elegance—including many portraits of his wife from his Sanur which now lives on as a museum.

Textures at the Villa No.20: Tatami

A traditional flooring with origins dating back to the 8th centur y for sleeping nobles and upper-class citizens, woven mats remain deeply embedded in Japanese culture that can still be found in most households today. Often featured in Wash*tsu or Japanese-style rooms, tatami creates a calming presence—grounding those who sit, relax, or sleep upon it.

A dancer, dance teacher, and one of the key figures in perfecting the sacred floral dance Tari Pendet, I Wayan Rindi (1917–1976) was a masterful artist known for her graceful movements, discipline, and a spirit that bridged tradition with innovation.

From her teenage years, she immersed herself in classical Balinese dance, learning from the old masters and later passing on her knowledge to future generations. I Wayan Rindi’s life was a dedication to the arts—bringing the sacred movements of Balinese dance to the world.
