In 1979, I Nyoman Astita introduced a musical piece that would alter the trajectory of Balinese music. Titled Eka Dasa Rudra, this gamelan or karawitan composition is recognized as one of the earliest examples of Balinese contemporary music.

Drawing from his travels and musical background, Astita broke traditional ensemble boundaries by having the performers move dynamically across the stage with instruments such as brooms, kulkul, and gongs.

A rock that fuels, the color black or brown turns red when aflame as it deteriorates into grey—coal is a material with rich carbon known as a medium to burn.

Since the early 20th century, Bali has been an island adored by travelers seeking a place known as a tropical paradise. Among them was the American actor Charlie Chaplin.

In 1932, Chaplin visited Bali to immerse himself in the island's offerings, from cultural endeavors like Balinese dance to the rhythms of daily life—which he captured with his camera. His visit was a respite from the rise of Hollywood talkie films, and following his time in Bali, Chaplin created Modern Times (1936) as one of his masterpieces.

Textures at the Villa No.11: Tenun Ikat

A weave of colors with patterns and motifs, Ikat Tenun is a cloth from Sumba, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) that is crafted by binding or tying textile threads and using a natural dye process.

Throughout tradition, the animal motifs in each Ikat Tenun reflect the wearer or their family with some example being the cockatoo that symbolizes unity and the horse that is associated to leadership.

Moving to the rhythm of the island, Limbak (1907–2003) is an artist notable for his powerful dance performances and the creation of Kecak or Tari Cak with Walter Spies in the 1930s.

Inspired by a Balinese dance intended to banish evil spirits with the title of Sang Hyang Jaran, Kecak was born as a vessel to tell the epic Ramayana. With rapid hand movements while sitting and chanting "cak" in unison, Tari Kecak present unparalled passion and energy.

From Manila to Bali, the painter Antonio Blanco (1912-1999) choose Ubud as a home. Portraying his love for Bali through paintings, he finally built a house in Campuhan area where artists before and after him resides against a backdrop of an enchanting island.

Evoking romance in his creation, Blanco painted woman from his beloved wife Ni Ronji to Balinese woman he sees in which beauty is the main theme when exposed to his work. Today, guests can visit his former house and studio that turns into a museum to experience the works for themselves.
