We have exciting news that has been in the works, behind the scenes, for a very (and an exaggerated number of verys) long time. Finally, several years into this experiment, we are ready to share the next chapter of our story.

First, we appreciate the people and opportunities the past 22 years have brought into our lives. In good times, you were there to cheer for us and celebrate every victory. In difficult times, you were there to lift our spirits and keep us busy. I have posted about gratitude several times over the years, so here is one more: many many thanks for making this journey infinitely rich and wonderful!

On to our news…we came to Sage Hollow to live.work.play in our tiny off-grid cabin, to operate our off-grid nursery, and to share our adventures in sustainable living with anyone interested in following along. Oh boy, have we had adventures! The first year was magical: we lived like Thoreau in our romantic forest and eagerly anticipated the beautiful life (we thought) lay ahead. Mother Nature sought to teach us a few lessons, however. After losing the entire nursery three or four times (I lost count), flood waters in our cabin, a hurricane and two freezes; we decided to make changes and upgrades to our configuration that would help us realize our goals sooner and more efficiently.

Today, our home and nursery are partially on-grid! The best part is, we can finally resume propagating our own plants for the first time since 2017. Here is our hoophouse, cleared out and cleaned — with the first crops in many years! We will grow many more plants to support our retail as well as our growing wholesale clientele. This is truly an exciting time for our team, and we look forward to sharing our new adventures with you.

All the best, as always!
Christy (on behalf of David, Sage and Skylar)

“To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power.
Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget… another world is not only possible, she is on her way.
On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing."
Arundhati Roy - The Cost of Living, 1999.

👣. Back in about 1930, you could either drive your car across the Don Patricio Causeway to get from Corpus to Padre Island or you could use this method: having your car towed by a boat after loading it onto a private pontoon. Texas ingenuity at its best! https://tracesoftexas.com/

1951 description of the Port Isabel Lighthouse: "For over 10 years before rehabilitation began last February, the building had been padlocked. Lightning had twice struck its iron roof; the metal railings had rusted and fallen away; wood work had rotted, bricks molded and crumbled, and the dizzily winding iron caracole had become rickety and dangerous.

A year ago, in a heavy windstorm, the cupola was blown off its moorings and left dangling. It was removed unceremoniously by tying a iron cable to it and yanking it off with a heavy truck."

Today the Port Isabel Lighthouse is a Texas Historical Commission State Historic Site and the only Lighthouse open to the public on the Texas Gulf Coast. Open daily, weather permitting, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission: $5 Adults; $4 Seniors (55+); $3 (Children 5-12 yrs.). Tickets are available at the Lighthouse & Keeper's Cottage Visitor Center during open hours. Keeper's Cottage Visitor Center is open Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (956) 943-0735.

Hunting Wildflower 101
It is Not All About Bluebonnets

Texas has over 5,000 different species of wildflowers and at last count only six species of Lupinus species that are counted as the state flower (bluebonnet). If you limit your interest in only bluebonnets, then your spring wildflower experience in Texas will come to an end the end of April. But if you are open to enjoying a multitude of colors then your experience has just begun. Even now, there are several species that will cover pastures and fields like the verbena in this field.

This photo was taken April 7, 2014 near Luling, Texas.
