We LOVE ✨a m b i e n t ✨ lighting, and here’s why… Since a van is a small space, making it cozy was a high priority for us. The best way to achieve that cozy vibe? Dimmable warm ambient lighting. Sitting around the table with friends at night genuinely felt like we were in a house. Here are some tips we learned along the way when it came to our lighting: 1. Neutral-toned lighting (leaning towards warm) makes the space feel warm and cozy. 2. There are two kinds of LED strips: ones that have dots of LED lights (the more common ones) and ones that are actual strips of light. If you use the dotted ones, it might come off less smooth and more busy to the eyes than using the strips. 3. Placing indirect lighting that’s dimmable, for example, under our benches, toe kicks, and around our happijac, is what sets the “vibes”. These aren’t your main ceiling lights, but they change the whole atmosphere! 4. Finding a way to have some hanging lights, for example, our camping lights that are battery-powered and we just hang up when we want them, is a perfect way to bring a luxurious homey feel to your living area. We had to take our baby to Black Rock City, iykyk 🖤 Story time! We took the van to the salt flats exactly one month and a day before Burning Man, and there was nothing there yet. Not even a stake in the ground. We were shocked! Happy, because we had the salt flats to ourselves, but still shocked! We thought the whole time we were driving in that half of the city would be built already. Turns out they only start building exactly one month before - and we were a day early! We camped in the area, and the next day we saw the post from Burning Man that the official building of the city had started, with the golden stake being hammered in (which is the first stake that begins the build of the city and the marking point of the Man effigy). This part of our build was extremely intimidating due to the lack of info out there on how to build this kind of bed lift system. BUT in the end we did it and we even found a way to make it our own. Throughout our research we had only seen them built in one way with one design. It’s not that we didn’t like how they looked, it’s just that it didn’t feel like us. We had a very specific design in mind and somehow we found a way to bring it to life. A lot of our design inspiration came from houses instead of other vans, and this is a perfect example. We love the look of exposed wooden beams in home design, and we found a way to mimic that look. Kids, read the all the labels on the products your using BEFORE you use them. Key word: before. This was a classic “moving too fast” mistake. We were in a rush to get the door in and we didn’t take our time to check the instructions on the product we were using. Many days after applying a matte polyurethane (top coat), the door was still sticky and shiny and we couldn’t understand why. That’s when we took out the can of polyurethane and reread the label - just to find out that it shouldn’t be used below 50 degrees. It was around 40 the night we put it on 🙃 We tried are best to accept the door as it was but it was so shiny you couldn’t really see the artwork, and little pieces of dust would collect on it. So we chose to take the risk of damaging the art and restart it by sanding it down to its original layer. When we starting sanding it looked so bad and we weren’t sure if we made an even worse mistake. The only choice we had now was commit to getting to the raw wood, so we kept going. This was really hard to watch because we thought the artwork would be completely ruined. Luckily it wasn’t so bad and Nicole just needed to touch it up in a few places. This was a huge lesson for us for the rest of the build. Building our rattan cabinets ⬇️ Nicole and I are ALL about ambient lighting, and when we saw this inspiration picture we decided it was a must! Honestly this was a fun and easy DIY project that can be done by anyone, whether you’re remodeling cabinets or building from scratch! Our tips after doing this project are: 1. Decide how see through you want your cabinets ahead of time - especially if you are planning to have light shinning through. We wanted them to glow but not to see all the things inside during the day. 2. If you want them to be more opaque then get creative and add a thin fabric on top of the rattan like burlap! Play with pairing two textures together and you can even do a different colour fabric depending on the look you want to achieve. 3. In our opinion a staple gun is 100% necessary to get a really taught surface. 4. Roll the rattan in the opposite direction than it’s packaged in order to flatten it out before securing it to the cabinets. We think this gives the kitchen area so much warmth, and helped to curate the Tulum vibes we we’re going for. Build the cabinets ourselves, miss our deadline to finish the van, and most likely they will come out mediocre at best 2. Isn’t it so great when your partition wall assembles itself? If only it was that easy 😅 This part of the build has been way more complex than we could have imagined. All and all the wall and door together took a week and a half to build. We love having the cab separated from the rest of the space to make it feel like more of a tiny home, but it was a close call since using swivel pilot seats keeps the space very open.
