Hole in the Wall.

On day two of the hike we get to witness this spectacular landmark by the Mpako River. Created over millions of years by the buffeting waves.

The local Xhosa people named this place esiKhaleni, which means the place of sound. The legend holds that this is the gateway to the world of Xhosa ancestors.

During certain seasons and water conditions, the waves collide with such force that their sound can be heard throughout the entire valley.

It all started with a group of friends. An idea was born to create a space for people to slow down and reconnect with themselves whilst immersing in nature and community.

We dare to believe that life is for living. No one should be stuck in the stress of just trying to survive. We invite you to step out into the freedom of nature, return to your journey and step back into the adventure of who you are.

This retreat is about creating a space where you can connect with what is most important to you.

Do you feel the need to reconnect with yourself whilst immersing in nature and community?

Introducing our Wild Coast Hiking Retreat 🌿
13-18 June 2024

This is a 4-day/5-night retreat on the central Wild Coast of Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The Hiking Retreat combines the collective powers of mindfulness, nature, movement and community. Every day is designed to bring these elements together to help cultivate curiosity and self-inquiry.

The hiking retreat is specifically scheduled in June with mild 20+ degree days, perfect for hiking.
If we are lucky, the month of June also offers an opportunity to witness the power and diversity of the ocean in its full glory. In the season of the sardine run, dolphins and whales are abundant.

We will gather and stay at different Backpackers & Community‑Owned Fair Trade Eco‑Lodges along the coastline.

Garden Route Hiking Retreat - Day 2 / 📍 Sinclair Hut to Harkerville Hut (+/-12km)
Now we start climbing and scrambling which is part of the privilege of walking over these rugged and untouched beaches. We take a swim in one of the rock pools to cool down and eat a make-shift lunch on the rocks before heading back into the forest and back to the Harkerville Hut.

Garden Route Hiking Retreat - Day 2 / 📍 Sinclair Hut to Harkerville Hut (+/-12km)
We start hiking in silence, to take it all in, to be present, to listen. This naturally leads us onto a beach where we sit down and reflect with 'free writing' in our journals. We also catch our breath before the climbing and scrambling begins...

Garden Route Hiking Retreat - Day 1 / 📍 Harkerville Hut to Sinclair Hut (+/-15km)
We step out of the forest and onto the untouched, rugged coastline. It feels like we are the first humans to walk here. We find ourselves stopping and staring into the distance while catching our breath from the climbing and scrambling that this terrain requires of us. After a full day of hiking we are looking forward to arrive at the mountain hut and let the experiences of the day sink in around a campfire

Garden Route Hiking Retreat - Day 1 / 📍 Harkerville Hut to Sinclair Hut (+/- 15km)
We start by stepping into the indigenous forest. Walking in silence for the first hour. And we are silently in awe of this magical world around us. While laughing and playing we manage to find a picnic spot between the trees for our lunch break before heading out of the forest and towards the untouched, rugged coastline that is patiently waiting for us

HAMBA KAKUHLE / Xhosa for “GO WELL”
The day after completing the hike we took a shuttle from Bulungula Lodge to Mdumbi Backpackers where we had started our journey earlier that week.
We were greeted by an extraordinary sunset and the festivities lasted well into the night.
The next morning we woke up rejuvenated, packed our bags and said goodbye to the & to new friends.
Until next time, friends.

Day 3 / Jan 22’ Hiking Retreat
📍Lubanzi - Bulungula (+/- 16km)
“Wake up
Breathe slow
Let come
Let go”
- 🎶🎶🎶
Waking up in a dreamy scene is a good way to describe a first impression of . It’s close to the perfect setting for slowly easing into a day and the overcast conditions played along nicely on this particular morning. At this point it was safe to say that new friendships were starting to flourish as was evident in the conversations paired with filter coffee and the amazing views from the communal area.
We started walking in light rain which stuck around for most of the day. The coastline and scenery became wilder if anything and the idea of the hiking section of the retreat coming to an end was bittersweet. It almost felt like everyone was trying to not think about that fact. The rain covers on the backpacks brightened up the misty scenes as we edged our way closer to .
Green sloping hills interrupted by occasional sections of beach and rocks was familiar by now and the ever-present cows had become part of the landscape.
The home stretch approaching Bulungula Lodge was covered barefeet on the beach and the last of the river crossings brought grateful smiles to tired faces.
On arrival we were treated to a thick slice of Xhosa Bread as stories of the now completed journey started flowing into the night.

Day 2 / Jan 22’ Hiking Retreat
📍Coffee Bay - Lubanzi (+/- 16km)
After a good night’s rest, morning meditation and a proper breakfast, day two launches you into the serious hiking section of the retreat. In terms of landscape you can expect to see more of the same kind of beautiful, but you have to work a little harder to get to those epic viewpoints.
We started off in bright sunshine and keeping hydrated was the key if you planned on making it to lunch at in shape to appreciate the scenery and to go for a 'mandatory' swim once you got there 🌊.
En route you have plenty of time for reflection and at times it almost becomes impossible not to venture inwards in response to the majestic landscape and sometimes otherworldly beauty you’re constantly surrounded by. It also becomes harder to hold a conversion on the frequent ascents and you inevitably ease back into sharing thoughts and stories in the increasingly more frequent water breaks.
Hole in the Wall arrives just in time and lunch wraps are served at possibly the most beautiful of views on the the (although this is not quite unanimous). At this point the wind had picked up quite dramatically and the clouds started rolling in as we prepared to take on the last leg of the hike for day two.
The final stretch was navigated in overcast conditions which turned into light rain towards the end of the day’s hike ending at the extraordinary Wild Lubanzi Backpackers where we were welcomed with a well deserved cold beer 🍺 on arrival. The perfect remedy for tired legs and empty water bottles.
With a proper day of hiking in the bag we eased into the stillness that evening brings in this part of the world, as we looked forward to what the final day of the hike would teach us.
