Kuimba Shiri Bird Park is located on the northern shore of Lake Chivero, about 30 km from the Harare city centre.

The Bird Park is privately-owned, but because it is within Lake Chivero Recreational Park, visitors must pay the Zimbabwe National Park visitor fee ($1 per vehicle) at the entrance gate. And you have to pay entrance to Kuimba Shiri itself, and it is well worth every penny.

MIKE Site - Monitoring of Illegal Killing of Elephants

Biosphere Reserve - One of the world’s wildest and preserved natural ecological areas

During the rainy season, most of the big game mammals move away from the river and into the escarpment. They start returning to the riverine areas from around April as the pans in the bush dry up. As the year progresses, increasingly large herds of Elephants and Buffaloes are seen, as well as Kudu, Eland, Waterbuck, Zebra, Impala and many Antelopes. The game is very relaxed about people on foot, making Mana Pools one of Africa’s best national parks for walking safaris.

The park is at the centre of a network of protected areas in the country, which stretches from Kariba to the Mozambique border. Mana Pools is located in Mashonaland West Province and falls under the ambit of the Hurungwe Rural District Council for higher level administrative purposes. There are over 20 000 km² of wildlife protected land in the vicinity of Mana Pools. It is in the Middle Zambezi Valley covering an area of 2196 km² (848 square miles) extending from the Zambezi River in the north to the escarpment in the south.

Chizarira National Park
“Home of the Hidden Gorges”

The park overlooks the upper waters of Lake Kariba and the mighty Zambezi Valley from its position on top of the great Zambezi escarpment in the country’s northwestern region.

Besides Hwange National Park, Gonarezhou National Park, and Mana Pools National Park, Chizarira National Park is Zimbabwe's fourth largest national park. Chizarira's rough terrain is part of the Zambezi Escarpment, of which the park gets its name from the Batonga word chijalila. In 1938, Chizarira was declared a non-hunting reserve and in 1963, it was declared a game reserve.

There are beautiful gorges, plateaus, flood plains and magnificent flora and fauna in this pristine 2,000 km² park, making it a stunning destination.

Two heroic boys aged 12 and 9 from Dondoshava in Mhondoro Ngezi, Mashonaland West Province, Magaya Village defied their ages and rescued a woman clasped by the leg by a 4 m long crocodile along Mungezi River.

The 12-year-old pulled the woman back while the 9-year-old fetched a log and tossed out one eye forcing the crocodile to release the woman. National Parks later captured the crocodile and indeed it had one eye missing. The woman was fishing using nets. These boys truly deserve recognition from the State.

The name Matusadona is derived from the local Tonga word ‘Matusviadonha’ of which the direct translation is ‘where the dung falls’ and so-called for the amazing amount of elephant dung that was found scattered in the area!

It is one of the Zambezi valley's wildlife and wilderness treasures. Remote and rugged, this wonderful park encompasses Lake Kariba's most beautiful southern shorelines.
