If you’re a Civil War buff, or if you’re looking to divert your kids’ attention for a few hours, there’s much Civil War history to be found on the Gulf Coast from Biloxi, through coastal Alabama, and into the Florida Panhandle. Here’s a trail you can follow, though you probably can’t make to all the highlights in one day. You can join the trail at any location. My website provides a downloadable PDF of Civil War sites on the upper Gulf coast. The Confederacy took over several US forts built to defend the Gulf Coast. These included Fort Morgan, Fort Gaines, and Fort Blakely in Alabama; Forts Barrancas, McRee, and Pickens at Pensacola, Florida; and Fort Massachusetts at Pascagoula, Mississippi. Get the guide or read about each of these forts on their respective pages of the US Gulf Coast Travel Guide https://www.usgulfcoasttravelguide.com/

Travel guide for the upper US Gulf Coast covering Northwest Florida coast, Alabama coast, and eastern Mississippi coast. Excellent advice, personal observations, historical background and stunning photographs of the region and its attractions, accomodations, restaurants. United States.

It's great news for tea lovers who want to travel to the south Alabama coast that a Foley, Alabama, tea bar has been named one of the top 100 places to eat.
Ye Olde Copper Kettle tea bar ranks number 66 on Yelp's list of top 100 places to eat.
Located on Chicago Street under towering live oaks, the tea bar has more than 100 tea flavors, which are freshly brewed when ordered. The tea can go with what you choose to eat from a menu that changes daily.
You'll also see local art and crafts in the store area.

If you're looking for a traditional beach bar to go to when you're visiting the Alabama coast, I'd recommend Pirate's Cove. It's in Elberta, so it's a bit of drive from the coast, but it sits on Robert's Bayou. There's a small beach and a large restaurant/bar that specializes in cheeseburgers and Bushwackers. Dogs are welcomed, and there will always be resident dogs in attendance begging for cheeseburgers or fries.
The bar was founded by German immigrants and the area was once used as a hideout by the privateer Raphael Semmes, who went on to captain the Confederate battleship CSS Alabama.

Three exciting developments on the Alabama Gulf Coast. First, the Alabama Marine Resources Division is doubling the size of three existing nearshore snorkel reefs at Orange Beach's Alabama Point, Gulf State Park Pavilion and Gulf State Park Romar Beach (both in Gulf Shores). Second, Grand Hotel outside of Fairhope in Point Clear was named in May by Southern Living magazine as one of the South's best resorts. And third, a new owner is expanding and enhancing the Fort Morgan Marina just outside of Gulf Shores. Endangered sea turtles started their nesting on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico May 1 and will be continuing until about October 1. The turtles are beautiful and fascinating, but they need to be left alone and protected. You may have seen a turtle swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, or even on a Gulf beach. Adult turtles can weigh 100 to 1000 pounds, depending on the species.
With hundreds of thousands of people visiting the beaches now, it is imperative that vacationers not disturb the turtles or their nests, which are protected by federal law. Fines and imprisonment can be the result for scoundrels who think turtle nests or sea turtles are something to play with.
The upper Gulf Coast averages more than one hundred nests each season. The species most common are loggerheads, though a few leatherbacks, hawksbills, Kemp’s Ridleys, and green turtles crawl ashore to nest as well. Most of the mommas come ashore during the night when it is cooler for them to be out of the water and predators are less likely to be around. They crawl up the beach and scratch out a nest, depositing from 50 to 120 eggs. Then they return to the sea, never to return to the nest.
Interestingly, the mother turtles return to the area where they were born decades earlier. And a female will nest three to four times in one season.
It takes 45 to 65 days for the eggs to hatch. And they will hatch at night. When the baby turtles emerge from the nests, they make their way into the water before the sun comes up.
Only Kemp’s Ridleys will nest during the day, and their eggs will hatch during daylight.
The numerous condos, houses, and businesses that have been built along the beaches interfere with the nesting behaviors of the turtles. Volunteers have formed Share the Beach, an organization devoted to finding the nests, marking the nests, and watching the nests to protect them from human interference.
If you’re on the beach as the sun is coming up, you’ll likely see some of the hundreds of volunteers from Share the Beach in their distinctive green T-shirts walking the beaches, searching for new nests. Once a nest is found, volunteers, working with state and federal game wardens, will put up wooden stakes on the four corners around the nest and stretch plastic tape around the stakes. They post signs identifying the nest as being protected by federal law. They will also put a metal grate over the nest to keep out natural predators like coyotes.
Several human behaviors make it tough for the turtles. Vacationers like to dig big holes on the beach to play in. If these holes are left on the beach overnight, a mommy turtle can get stuck in one of them. Unable to get out, she can die from heat exposure once the sun comes up. So, if you dig a hole, please fill it back in before you leave for the evening. (Humans, too, can be harmed by the holes. If they don’t see them as they walk along the beach they can fall in.)
Another problem for mother turtles coming ashore are beach furniture pieces left overnight on the beach. A mother turtle can become disoriented if she runs into a beach chair, a tent, a cooler, or other structure on the beach. Some cities, such as Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, have ordinances against leaving items on the beach. City employees will remove items left on the beach and dispose of them.
Lighting also causes problems for baby turtles. Hatchlings depend on seeing the shapes and shadows generated by stars and the moon when they emerge from the nest. This helps them move away from the dunes. Consequently, they find the water using the minimal lighting from the celestial lights. If a house or condo or a streetlight shines light on the beach, the baby turtles can move toward them instead, which takes the turtles away from the water. Eventually, hatchlings will die or be killed if they can’t find the surf quickly enough.
In general, trash causes all kinds of problems, so please pick up your plastic bottles, empty beer cans, and other trash items and dispose of them properly. The plastic and trash make the beach unpleasant, but they can also get into the surf and float out to sea. Sea life, including turtles, can get tangled in plastic or can ingest plastic and die.
If you see a turtle in distress, call 1-866-732-8878 to report it.
Enjoy your time on the beach, but also be good stewards of Mother Nature by respecting the needs of the endangered sea turtles.

Destin has world-class white sand beaches and beautiful emerald green water from the Gulf of Mexico splashing onto its shore. It is one of the first Panhandle cities that developed vacation opportunities equal or surpassing anything you can find on the lower Florida Gulf Coast.

Beyond the beaches are boat rides, sailing, parasailing, kayaking, Banana Boats, a pirate cruise, and fishing for adults and kids. Great restaurants and superb shopping await you. Indeed the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” as the city has been called since the mid-20th Century, has one of the largest recreational fishing fleets in the country for taking vacationers into the Gulf of Mexico for fabulous fishing, even so far as going to the hundred-fathom curve just miles off the Destin shore. Down in Mobile they’re all crazy, because the Gulf Coast is the kingdom of monkeys, the land of clowns, ghosts and musicians, and Mobile is sweet lunacy’s county seat. -- Eugene Walter, “The Untidy Pilgrim,” 1953.

Mobile native and author Eugene Walter captures the spirit of Mobile, Alabama, on America’s Gulf Coast like no other writer has captured it. Indeed, the 2019 motto selected by the city’s tourism board is “Born to Celebrate!” From Mardi Gras to sports, from historic neighborhoods to contemporary attractions, Mobile has much to offer visitors. The 12th annual Hangout Oyster Cookoff severed over 100,000 oysters baked, grilled, and raw to the biggest crowd ever at the event -- about 7,000.
Wolf Bay Lodge took the overall prize for their oysters.
Live music was great. New country star Caroline Jones was a crowd favorite performing some of her well-known songs such as "Gulf Coast Girl." At night, Jimmy Hall and the Muscle Shoals All-Stars wrapped up the night with songs recorded at the famous Muscle Shoals studios during the early years of rock and roll, blues, and soul music.
Unfortunately, this celebration of Gulf oysters came just one week before a major story in the New York Times revealed that the Gulf may lose its place as the nation's oyster provider. Heavy rains flooded bays with fresh water, destroying oyster beds last summer. Climate change and environmental degradation is killing off the oysters. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/12/dining/gulf-oysters.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share

Gulf Shores and Orange beach held a tourism summit at Gulf State Park on Oct. 16. It was reported that 6.6 million visitors visited the Alabama Coast in 2018, spending $4.6 billion, supporting 54,000 jobs in south Baldwin County.
Chris Blankenship of the Ala. Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources announced that Gulf State Park has been designated by National Geographic as having one of the 55 worldwide "Unique Lodges of the World." The park has 28 miles of hiking/biking trails, 6,150 acres with 9 distinct ecosystems, 3 fresh water lakes and a rare maritime forest. The park is working towards sustainable tourism, which is environmental friendly, protects cultural and natural heritage, and provides direct, tangible support for local communities.

According to News Mississippi, an online news organization serving coastal Mississippi,

"Visitors in Mississippi spent an estimated $6.5 billion in 2018, a 4.2% percent increase over 2017 numbers. As visitor spending increased, so did the overall number of visitors. In 2018, Mississippi hosted 24 million visitors who helped to support more than 127,000 jobs."

A Brief Look at Northwest Florida Tourism

Haas Center | May 20, 2019

We recently took a look at the tourist development tax collections for five of the counties in Northwest Florida. In addition to normalizing the collection rate so that different periods of time could be compared to each other, we also adjusted the dollar value of the collections to account for inflation. By doing this, we can better examine the volume of visitors to the area over time. We also looked at the changes in the available numbers of rental units and the revenues they generate. Here are the results using 2018$.

Escambia County tourism revenues were on the rise before two hurricanes, an oil spill and a recession took their toll. It has taken 10 years for collections to return to the trend path that they were on before these events but they have increased significantly since then.

Herb Malone, President & CEO of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism, spoke at a recent South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Series, giving the community an update on the impact of tourism in Baldwin County during 2018, beginning with the impressive number of 6.6 million guests who came to the area last year.

“That means 6.6 million people sat around the coffee table or the dinner table and talked about where they were going to go on vacation last year,” said Malone. “The mountains? Take a cruise? Disney? And somewhere along that line, somebody said they should go to the beach.”
