Birds of the Peruvian Cloud Forest 🌧️🌳

We offer birding and photography expeditions to several locations in Peru which allow guests to encounter a range of colourful and fascinating birds, including some endemics and endangered species.

Yesterday we said goodbye to our last group visiting us from Chile. Even with a cold front playing a bit of havoc with the weather it was still a successful trip.

Enjoy some of the beauties we saw in the first few days in the higher altitudes around Cusco:

Here today - gone tomorrow?

We have been blessed with being able to see a number of endangered species during our travels across South America.

We hope that future generations will also have the opportunity to see them in their natural habitats.

Introducing the cute and stinky Patagonian Hog-nosed Skunk.

Locally called Chingue or Zorrillo Patagonico, and scientifically known as Conepatus humboldtii.

Another resident of the Patagonia that we often have to make an effort to find. These small mammals are crepuscular and nocturnal and are best looked for in the early morning and late evening hours hunting for bugs and small mammals to eat.

Say hello to the Big Hairy Armadillo of Patagonia 🗻

Every now and then we are treated to a sighting of one of these little guys (1-3kg).

If clients ask we have certain places we go to specifically search for them along with the Patagonian Hog-nosed Skunk.

The vibrant colours of the male Long-tailed Meadowlark in his breeding plumage is a pleasure and a surprise to many a visitor to Patagonia.

During the breeding season they often sing their musical melody sitting on an exposed perch and have kept many a group entertained whilst they wait for a sleepy puma to become active again.

Keep an eye (and an ear) out for these guys during your visit to the Patagonia - colloquially known as Loicas.

Sharing a few more of our Jaguars of Pantanal photos from our trips this year.

We have now finished our last Pantanal guest trip for the season. We are taking a short break before we go on a scouting trip. We will check out a place that holds promise for another one of Pantanal’s highly sort after species. If successful you will be sure to hear about it!

Otherwise we now set our sites on the chilly Patagonia as our first groups will soon be arriving for their walk on the wild side on our Untamed Pumas of Patagonia Expedition.

Pumas and the Patagonian landscape…

Not only are the pumas beautiful creatures to observe and photograph, but these particular pumas live in truly wild and breathtaking landscape.

We wanted to share with you a few photos to help you appreciate the amazing scenery you will encounter when you join us on an Untamed Pumas of Patagonia Expedition.

P.s. this is is about the only landscape photography we ever do, but we seem to have a theme.

Enjoy.

Southern Pantanal - the same but different.

The fauna of the Southern Pantanal isn’t really all that different from Northern Pantanal, but what we get to see is!

One of the biggest draws to the Southern Pantanal is for the increased chances of Giant Anteater and the smaller Tamandua anteater, but there are plenty of other species to photograph too!

Lowland Tapir - Sachavaca - Anta

One of Pantanal’s big 5, weighing anywhere between 150-350kg! We got lucky finding one crossing the river in the early hours of the morning as we searched for jaguars by boat, and the other at a waterhole during a night drive.

What other animals would you want to be on your big 5 tick list for Pantanal?

Jaguars as requested!

Some of the shots from our latest Jaguars of Pantanal Expedition (August 2023).

Just the usual - swimming jaguars, hunting jaguars, tree climbing jaguars, and lots and lots of sleeping jaguars.

We cruise around the Pantanal waterways keeping cool as we look for jaguars and other wildlife to photograph. It always makes clients happy to be the first to find a jaguar - we’ve had some very happy clients.

We’re part way through our second-last group who elected to visit southern Pantanal for some Giant Anteater photography - so stay tuned!

Brazilian Cerrado

It’s been too long since a client has given us a reason to visit this amazing location in South America.

One of the main targets here is the strange and wonderful Maned Wolf. It lives in a number of places we visit, but the chances of seeing one is very low, but here we have very good chances. It has a sad story of persecution and false beliefs, a shy creature that often eats more fruits than prey.

Here we can also see a distinct assemblage of bird species, including the beautiful Hyacinth Macaw, as well as the famous tool-using Capuchins and some other mammals.

So, who is going to help us with an excuse to go back?

Snakes! 🐍

Serpents, vipers, legless-lizards, cobras are just a few names for these curious creatures.

Do you love them? Do you hate them? Do you respect their formidable beauty?

We occasionally encounter them on our mammal and bird orientated wildlife and photography expeditions, but perhaps we should spend more time looking for some of these guys. What do you think? Would you join us for some snake photography?

We’re on our way!

Next week we are going to be back in the Brazilian Pantanal. Last year we visited from July to October, during the dry season, which is typically the best season to see some of the Pantanal Giants!

As many water sources dry up, the wildlife is drawn to the permanent water bodies. A Safari truck drive across the grasslands and boat rides are excellent way to explore and find many of them.

Some photos from our 2022 trips last year of the Pantanal Giants.

Patagonian mammals encountered on our Untamed Pumas of Patagonia Photography Expeditions.

For many of these mammals they are actually harder to find than the pumas! Which is why we are always on the lookout for them, from the moment we leave the starting point in Punta Arenas.

Birds of Patagonia

Our Pumas of Patagonia expeditions are of course Puma orientated, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other things to photograph. The beautiful landscape, other mammals, and Patagonian birds. Perhaps as we search we spot something and take the opportunity to capture it, or to pass the time as we wait for a sleeping Puma to wake up. Other times clients specifically want to seek out the local wildlife to see and photograph.

Patagonia has some iconic as well as beautiful bird species. Here are a few species we can come across during our expeditions:

Atlantic Forest Day

A place of beautiful landscapes, lush forests, home to many plants and animals, some uniquely found in this habitat.

Yet only 7% of it remains untouched. Much of it is gone, deforested, urbanised, never to return. Some has been irreversibly altered.

The fragments that remain support a number of rare and endangered species that are found no where else.

Atlantic Forest Day is to help raise awareness, and to:

🛑 STOP further deforestation
❤️‍🩹 RECOVER degraded forest
📈 INCREASE the size and number of protected areas
💪 IMPROVE existing management

Those glorious golden hours we love so much. Here are three pumas from three different moments in time. Three of many special moments spent with these amazing animals in an amazing place.

Happy Easter! 🐰🐥🌸

On this day we remember the joys and blessing of new life. In our time visiting wild places across South America we have witnessed the cycle of life.

It is always sad to see things pass, but we know, in time, new things are to come. Sharing with you some of the new life we have experienced.

Wishing you all a beautiful and blessed day from the Untamed Expeditions team!

❄ Upcoming Winter Pumas Expedition! ❄

Our next Pumas of Patagonia photography expedition will be in the start of what we considered the winter months of Patagonia.

The crowds of summer sightseers and hikers disperse, many of the hotels and lodges close, temperatures begin to drop, as do the winds.

June to August are the months with highest probability of snow fall, but as across the globe, weather is more and more unpredictable each year.

It is always a hope that we get snow conditions on our Untamed Winter Puma Expeditions.
