Did someone say Summer?

When we pulled into Airlie we hit two days of rain and were holed up in the van for 48 hours. We tried to outrun the storms by leaving early so that we at least weren’t driving in the chaos. When when the deluge broke on Day 3 this was stop #1.

Airlie is one of the few north facing beaches and a unsets were amazing.

We stayed at Tannum Sands on our way up north. The plan was for four nights to give us time to check out the area and do some day trips. Whilst the weather wasn’t in our favour the park was just our kind of place.

Behind the cabins at the front there’s a few aisles of powered sites with slabs and ground sheets as you’d expect. However what they also offer is a massive field for unpowered camping where you can set up as you please and it doesn’t cost the earth. When you’re heading from slab to slab there’s something special about being able to roll out the awning in open space, let the boys kick a ball without stressing over which car it will hit 😳 and have a campfire or picnic on the grass. Turn your back on the rest of the park and it was like camping in the bush with the added benefit of a short stroll to hot showers, a playground and pool 😁

We were heartbroken to cut our time here short but it’s just fuelled the motivation to explore the region more. If you’re heading past be sure to check it out!

Now you’re not always guaranteed sunshine and roses, even in Queensland. This adventure we copped a week straight of rain and had to skip some of our favourite planned stops to beat the storms. We headed straight from Noosa to a little town called Tannum Sands. I could photograph this place for days. It’s got such a great little tropical vibe with bike tracks winding the foreshore. We asked the locals about 🐊 and were reassured there hadn’t been any here in a long time 🤔Here’s a few pics to get you started. It’s a town to head back to for sure…

Noosa mornings definitely did not disappoint.

Noosa North Shore is our kind of vibe. The bush, the beach, 4WD accessible, fires allowed. Throw into the mix a bit of power for those extra conveniences and we’re home. The grounds are well maintained and keep that authentic bush atmosphere with gravel roads and sandy sites. The bark chips kept the sites clean and natural.

Drinking water is accessible at the central camp kitchen and amenities so we were able to run a hose and fill her up on the way in. The front office and reception sells the basics to ease the need to head back across the ferry. On low tide and with a Cooloola Rec permit you can head all the way up to Double Island Point and across to Rainbow Beach.

Sites started from $37 a night unpowered up to $52 for beachfront powered sites in the off season. We hit school holidays which added an extra $7 to the base and kids were $11.50 each on top of that. Add onto that the ferry ride across which for us with the van was $22. Definitely not the cheapest patch of dirt we’ve slept on but the vibe is real. It’s definitely the kind of spot you come to and stay for the week to embrace the full experience.

The kids loved the freedom of riding bikes and jumping down dunes. This is one spot we can’t wait to get back to.

So we decided after a full day of ✈️ fun that night one needed to be not too far from the airport. We arrived at 4pm so the best options would be under an hour away to make sure there was enough time to run the day off. Turns out when you book a last minute adventure to that most places are already booked out by those well organised folk that head north for a few months to avoid the cold.

I wanted to check out so the fact we couldn’t get in on the river was all the excuse I needed to head over the ferry to Noosa North Shore. We could only get an unpowered site but there was no complaining. Probably should have factored in the $22 ferry fee each way when arguing my case but it was worth every cent just to check it out.

Arrived in time for sunset and it didn’t disappoint

So it turns out when you fly solo with four kids people suddenly feel either

(a) really sorry for you so they open up quick lanes and smile sweetly in awe of your courageous independence

or (b) really scared that your four kids are going to lose it and cause a scene that they es**rt you through with speed and grace

Whatever the reason I'll take it. Not sure what everyone else thought but I was pretty impressed with their patience. To be totally honest people were amazingly kind. It's been awhile since I've ventured out into busy life and it was a really nice experience to see people looking out for you (like the time Mr3 disappeared into the toilets...) Heart skipped a beat for sure.

Apart from Mr2 & Mr3 disappearing temporarily 🤦‍♀️I didn't lose them and they didn't lose it either! Mr4 was well and truely over the experience by the time we boarded but somehow he held it together for the flight. For the other 3 I had packed devices and put a ban on them until we were waiting at the gate. Only downside was they were still so excited to be in digital world they barely paused to take in the takeoff!

Super grateful to be seated next to a lovely and kind young woman who found the experience inspiring. I definitely appreciated your positivity way more than I expressed! And thank you to my beautiful air hostess who was kind enough to bring me a cup of tea even though I couldn't fund the experience. 🙏

Hot tip for all you 'yet to flyers' - don't go completely card free! Bring a bank card on a flight! Cash & Tap are both useless in the air!

And we made it.
Thanks

It's there first time on a plane. And to make this trip achievable I'm doing the flight solo. Mr Sunday is well on his way to so we are doing this trip as a team of 5. Wish me luck!

Love afternoons at our happy place to reset and refocus on what is truly important.

Some weeks are just a mess of chaos and it can be overwhelming to realise you can’t get that time back. But look to the little moments and squeeze them tight. They’re what these ones will remember x

Today I walked & to the park. Wasn’t sure if I was going to make it out the door but alas we all survived. Nice to get out distraction free for a while!

On another note this pic was taken at the glamtainers down @ Ocean Beach Holiday Park. Such a cool concept. Would love one in the backyard!

After a year of COVID interfering with everything travel we’re super stoked to be back on the road.

Despite thinking we were extra prepared this time round we’ve had a few hiccups to the start of this season. Low power. Broken fridge. 100% off grid.

We camp off grid quite a lot and this time of year is no exception. We’ve been learning about everything 12v to try and up our power game. To make it even more fun we had some delays so have had to install on the road. Keen to share what we’ve learnt (and are still to learn) in a lithium 101 series.

Who’s done the big conversion?

If that’s Christmas Day done let’s make it every day of the year ❤️

And what a year we’ve had. From heart surgery to home reno, Covid and the like it’s been a ride to say the least. This is the third Christmas without my Mum and I still wasn’t ready to do it at home. Changing it up has honestly been the best thing for us. Not to say I don’t feel guilty at times but when it arrives and there’s a day like today I wouldn’t do it any other way.

The sun, the ocean, the laughter, the smiles, the excitement, the tears, the sugar rush, and a rogue lace monitor or two just to round it all out. Doing Christmas differently these last few years has really allowed us to take the pressure off and make our own traditions. Loving this wild ride as a family of six ❤️

Oh and the were totally the winner - thanks Santa 🎅🏼 🙌🏼

Well lockdown is almost over and we’re back…

TBTH we’ve been totally juggling one too many adventures these last few months. You’d think we’d be great at being all crammed up on top of each other 🤷🏼‍♀️ but amid renovating our home, running a side gig or two, and working we’ve been struggling to thrive just like the rest of you.

As the reno is nearing its end and the possibility of adventure is reignited, it’s time to show you some of the best bits of our gorgeous LGA on the Central Coast of NSW.

At the most northern point is the Munmorah State Conservation Area. Stretching from Moonee Beach in the north, to Birdie Beach in the South, it is bordered by Catherine Hill Bay and Budgewoi.

To start off our lock down adventures we dotted Frazer Beach in the map. Driving in, as a place we hadn’t ventured to before we were stunned. Tropical greens lined the winding roads in, and the beach was just divine. The pics tell the story 🌅

We don’t often post of life at home. Mainly because when we’re here life goes back to organised chaos and we forget to share the little moments. It’s a whirlwind of schoolwork, nappy changes and fighting the children out of the pantry - and most days I feel the reality that I’m totally outnumbered.

Prelockdown I’d wait for the days the boys were in preschool and school so I could get things done. There’s nothing quite like an empty house to actually let your brain have time to think uninterrupted. And as the first few weeks of lockdown rolled on I found myself way too stressed out and wishing away the days. These last few weeks have been a great reality check to see what the kids will remember. I’m taking more time out to play laser tag and tip, and we go on a daily adventure walk so break up the repetition.

On yesterday’s walk we found a stunning piece of roadkill I was totally prepared to walk past. But the boys were so intrigued I let them have a good look. As I explained to them you should always check roadkill for babies (as I’ve been told and never done) Mr #7 asks why it’s still breathing if it’s dead. I somehow conquered my fears and pulled at the tummy of the flattened and maimed ringtail and out popped a blue tail. Sure enough this mumma had somehow saved her precious babies who were still attached. We bundled up the mumma in Mr Batman towel and carried her home. A quick call to Wires and we were off to the local vet who was kind enough to remove the babies safely from the pouch (they were already detached from the teat) so the boys could see. They came home so proud to tell Dad they’d saved not one but two lives today 😍

Here’s a few pics of the paradise we call home. The rescue is on the last two slides x

You know it’s the fourth child when they get their own wipes and nappies before crawling over to tell you they need to be changed at 9 months old… 😂

There’s definitely been something special about adding this piece to our puzzle 🧩 This time we know we’re complete. There’s been time to just enjoy each other without the many added stresses we had last time round (although we’re pretty good at creating our own - insert reno here). This time we’re all a little bit wiser, knowing when to worry and when to just hold on and enjoy the ride.

I’d always read that having four children was less stressful than three. Despite what many random people think (insert list of inappropriate comments about birth control, buying a bigger TV and having your hands full, four children, they’re all yours, and wait for it, four boys 😱) our family is definitely less stressed! Crazy as it sounds I think that’s because we’ve learnt not to try and do it all.

With three we were still trying to hold on, to be in control, to have it all sorted. This latest addition has made sure we can’t keep up with everyone all the time and that’s perfectly OK. He’s helped us focus on what’s really important - and that’s all about teaching them what life is about. It’s not a destination with a high five and a well done at the end, here’s your pay check to cash in in heaven. Instead it’s a journey where every moment counts. Where the way you make other people feel is more important than whether the washing is clean. It’s about shaking off the critical parent that lies in all of us and using the 2Ls of milk and entire packet of nutrigrain smeared all over the kitchen floor as an opportunity to connect with the 3 year old and ask what I can do for him, what does he need, instead of telling him to clean it up.

It’s a struggle on the daily in this household, whether we’re on the road or at home, but slowly and surely we’re asking instead of telling. And it’s doing wonders…

PS - it’s OK not to be OK. If you need anything DM ⬇️

But despite all the luxuries, tucked away in aisle G at the south end of the park we felt like we were on holidays in the National Park. Just with running water. And power. And all the luxuries. The features are each tucked away in accessible locations but far enough from the camping areas that it's like they don't exist.

And I can't tell you how good it was in a week of rain to be able to swim in a heated pool and enjoy the facilities. I can imagine in peak season there's not much room to move but for his trip it was perfection. Now to book in again...

The more places we travel to the more we realise that there's not that many 'true' beachfront holiday parks. And especially so if you want to be able to afford to stay there for more than 24 hours. We'd have to say that Pambula is definitely an exception.

Head down the sandy track and no more than twenty metres later you hit the sand at this stunning beach. In the realm of Instagram it can be hard to be sure if photos are really what they seem. A side angle mixed with a bit of added vibrance and you'd be amazed at what people achieve. I can't recall the amount of times I've compared Instareality to a location and questioned if I somehow got the wrong directions from Siri. But at Pambula, like a handful of places on the NSW South Coast, those blues are truely what your eye sees looking into the water.

The rocky headland sits a few hundred metres south of the beach access and is a great place to explore. The boys were fascinated at the crystals developing in the rock face and the stunning reds of the siltstone kept them engaged while we took the chance to relax. It's a place where nature becomes the entertainment and their minds are allowed to grow and imagine.

It's no secret that we love a good National Park campground or free camp where we are immersed in nature. Our favourite campground is just metres from the beach and if you go at the right time of year you can feel as though no-one else exists. It can be rare to find this vibe outside of these zones but from the moment we arrived Pambula felt like home.

It was just post lockdown so social distancing was at the forefront of everyone's minds. We arrived and checked in and were told we'd be es**rted to our site. At first we weren't sure what to think. We've been to our fair share of rodeos and this was this first one we were being told where and how to park. But the couple running the park were lovely, and making sure we were aligned correctly was as much for our benefit as for everyone else's. I can't count the number of times I've arrived on site and had someone half in my zone because they didn't look at the markings correctly. And hosting around 300 powered sites I could imagine come peak season this makes everyone's life easier.

It was definitely the 'off-season' - vans were scattered around and despite being 6 rows back from the beach access we had a clear view. The wildlife was abundant and definitely not intimidated. They know who the locals are in this scenario. But the vibe was just epic. There's not many places you have the comforts of a resort with the vibe of serenity. Pambula feels like home.

What a run it has had!! From bushfires to flooding, Covid to… well COVId..

Last time we were over the border we had to wait for it to reopen. We camped at Mallacoota the night before the borders reopened. It’s a short drive to get across but we had no idea how many others were awaiting the same journey. Turns out there were no queues and barely any other cars in the road. A drastic difference to what we’d witnessed the week before with queues for kms and cars being turned around for not having the right pass.

With so many amazing spots on offer we were spoilt for choice. If you want to camp by the ocean the south coast is rich with seaside localities. This time round we headed to a new spot - Pambula. We’d never even heard of it let alone stayed there. Driving in past the stunning Twofold Bay at Boydtown we weren’t sure skipping Eden was the right move. The blue of the water was absolutely stunning. But when we pulled into Pambula it just felt like home…

This is one of the few campgrounds we know about that is still free of designated sites. Take the car ferry from Port Macquarie and head up the beach or backroad to get to the stunning Point Plomer, just south of Crescent Head. It’s a protected bay with a great vibe and super family friendly. You’ll need to be set up for solar and bring your own water. There’s amenities and actually some cabins on site but the rest is nature at its finest. A great spot for fishing I’m yet to see the boat ramp without a couple of pelicans waiting for scraps.

Have you stayed here?

Love finding old gems. These pics were from a year ago when we decided to document our travels to share. They’re also some of the first pics we have knowing we were going to be a family of 6!

We’re pretty blessed to call this place home. Sometimes we wonder why we travel so much when we get to come home to this piece of paradise. But it’s the memories, the moments, and the time spent in each other’s pockets that really allows us to choose who we want to be and what sort of legacy we are going to lead for our little family unit.

It’s not always easy. For some reason we often treat the people closest to us the worst - they cop the bad moods and off the cuff criticisms, the things said without thinking and the middle of the night tirades. But these are the same people that deserve the very best of us. Encouragement, patience, gentleness, kindness, praise. I’ve been trying to stop lately before I react in a situation and think 🤔 what am I trying to teach in this moment? And then I try to work on modelling it. It’s hard but it helps...

As avid caravaners we are used to travelling with our comfort towed right behind us. There's nothing quite like the feeling of knowing that you can change plans at any point in time and your bed is right behind you. We've stayed at South West on many occasions now and love the comfort so when we were given the opportunity to check out Beachfront @ SouthWestRocks we were keen, but also a little nervous, to find out how an apartment stay would change things up for us.⠀
⠀
is just that. It's literally right at Main Beach. The view from the lounge room and balcony is of that epic rock formation where Saltwater Creek meets the ocean. It can't be more than 50m to the creek and 300m to the ocean lapping your toes. It's situated at the end of Leppington St, which is a main road through town, but this part of the road itself is a dead end so there's no through traffic. ⠀
⠀
In between the apartment and the beach you have one of the best kids playgrounds I've come across in ages. It has everything, and best of all, is spread out across a section of park so that the kids can run and play. There's at least three different sets of swings, two flying foxes, a rope pyramid climbing net, boat, three or four slides and a set of climbing equipment for the younger kids. Benches are built into the surrounds and it was easy to just sit while the boys played.⠀
⠀
The apartment itself is light, bright and freshly reno’d. The coastal vibe really gave a touch of luxe to our stay and helped with some inspo for our own renovations we have on the cards. We had a fair bit of rain throughout our stay so it was nice to have the extra space to chill out together when the downpours came. We love being in the van, even on rainy days, but there’s definitely something a bit special about being able to walk from one end of the room to the other without squishing past someone! TBC ⠀

There are some towns that just have it all.

It doesn’t seem to matter how many times we come here there’s always something new to discover. So when we were given the chance to check out a local air bnb and enjoy a last pre surgery trip away we jumped! I think my favourite thing about all of this is the memories we make. It’s an excuse to stop and enjoy the moment.

And when the you’re staying metres away from this stunning beach who wouldn’t!

We’ve been a little quiet over here. We’re currently savouring every moment of the few weeks we have before this little champ undergoes open heart surgery. I don’t think there’s anything scarier for a parent than watching your little one go through an operation or ordeal you can’t protect them from.

We’re truly blessed to have a great team of doctors on board to correct a structural abnormality for this little guy. It’s a once a year surgery so not very common but we know he’s in great hands. It’s the keeping him chilled for 6 weeks post op we’re worried about 😂

We managed to sneak in one last escape to brighter weather before the rain last week, heading back to one of our favourite places on the NSW coast.
Will be sharing that soon. But on another note - any advice for those that have been through surgery before?

19/03/2021

Always talk to strangers. It’s a bit different to the rule we teach our kids, but when you’re venturing somewhere new it can open up a whole new world.

If it hadn’t been for the kind stranger who looked at us - 3 families with 12 kids in tow - and told us about the swimming hole up top we never would have seen it.

Upon reviewing the photos I can see the trail is even listed on the map. But finding the overgrown path was difficult. It’s always a little bit disconcerting when you see a stranger returning from deep in the bush alone but after being told by stranger #1 about the swimming hole stranger #2 venturing back out of the bush with a towel wrapped around him seemed to add up a little more.

We took the kids down the bush track and the result was beautiful. It’s the top of the falls, but well back from the falls itself. A rope swing hangs on the other side of the river. The water itself was like ice 🧊 with only Mr Sunday and Mstr 4 brave enough to venture in. Had we gone straight there after returning from our hike I think we all would have jumped in.

Now the only thing I haven’t told you about is the drive in. You can access Elands from a few coastal towns - mainly Taree and Port Macquarie - but the drive despite being only 80kms takes a lot longer than you’d think. Trust the estimate - it was close to 2 hours and lots of unpacked and winding roads. Many sections require you to slow for passing traffic. We had a Ute towing a box trailer fly through at well above the speed limit nearby wiping out both cars. But what the journey affords is a great experience. If you head in from Taree way there’s some great spots to stop and check out here too ✌🏼
