It's !

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories and contributions of Native people, and to learn about the unique struggles Native Americans have, and continue to, face today.

Our state was the first state to recognize an American Indian Day in 1916. And well before that, one of the first advocates of an American Indian Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian and the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester.

Check out the Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House's collaboration with K Art, a Native-American owned, Buffalo-based, commercial art gallery with a focus on Native contemporary artists, to provide some history and context about Indigenous people and art in Western New York.

November is Native American Heritage Month – a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people.

This month, we have partnered with K Art, a local Native American owned commercial art gallery, to share information about history and art of Indigenous people in Western New York.

From a current exhibition at the gallery: This is Red Power (1973) from Seneca author and artist G. Peter Jemison. It was painted in the same year as the Occupation of Wounded Knee and depicts a sand burr soaked in grisly hues of red, acting as a reminder of how the American armed forces viewed Native pride.
