As the final guests of our 2024/25 season depart, the last round of equipment touches down to support our crew through the final two weeks of camp closures.

Across all three locations, our incredible teams are hard at work—packing down, securing key structures, and preparing for the 2025/26 season. (Exciting things ahead… but more on that soon.)

In Antarctica, where the cold pushes both man and machine to their limits, even the toughest aircraft require expert care.

Originally a DC-3, the Basler BT-67 has been re-engineered for the extremes—its airframe reinforced, fuselage extended, and Pratt & Whitney PT6A turboprops installed for greater power and endurance. Precision maintenance from our flight crew is essential. From daily inspections to full overhauls, every detail is checked to ensure peak performance in sub-zero conditions.

Where science and guest experience meet.

The White Desert Foundation is committed to advocating for education on important climate-related science. Here our guests are in conversation at Echo Base with the Project LifeMet team, who are explaining the significance of the meteorites they are finding and what it may mean to their research.

For just a few weeks in January, as the days warm over the summer period, the ice waves near Whichaway camp turn into these mesmerising blue rivers. A true spectacle to behold.

Then almost all at once, they freeze over with the arrival of the Antarctic winter. Not to be seen again for another year.

In these moments, you’re reminded that adventure is sweeter when celebrated together.

The contrast is dizzying—outside, the glacier stands resolute while icy winds blow across the frozen lake. Inside, there is comfort, warmth and excited chatter from a day of shared activities.

Taking 'walking and talking' to new glacial heights.

Patrick Woodhead, Co-founder and CEO of White Desert, had the pleasure of spending a week on ice chatting with Graham Bensinger. The crew made their way through both camps, keeping to the theme of walking and talking–mixed in with a fair amount of hiking and climbing of course.

Follow the link in our bio for the full episode.

In 2005, Patrick and Robyn Woodhead established White Desert with a shared dream to take clients into the forbidding interior of Antarctica - a place traditionally reserved for select scientists and explorers. At the time, all they had were 3 small mountain tents and a lot of ambition.

Fast forward 20 years and White Desert has established one of the largest infrastructures in Antarctica; utilising 5 aircraft, 3 camps and over 130 staff. The team support research scientists from 8 separate nations and bring exclusive groups of tourists into the continent in what has become a multi-award winning business.

On the 20th day of every month this year we will share stories and insights from the White Desert archive. Join us this year as we celebrate 20 years of guiding our clients into the interior of Antarctica!

The SA Agulhas II has just pulled up to the ice shelf to deliver our goods!

Did you know, this same ship played a pivotal role in polar history with the discovery of Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship, the Endurance, 3,008 meters beneath the Weddell Sea!

Every year, the Agulhas embarks on a journey to Antarctica to deliver vital supplies and equipment for the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE). As part of White Desert's commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, we share some of our logistics with SANAE, aligning efforts to make the most of this annual relief voyage.

When you operate in the most remote corners of Earth, collaborations like these are essential!

Come behind-the-scenes as we construct Antarctica's first ever Wellness Dome!

The dedicated Whichaway operations team had to wait for the perfect weather window to piece together this intricate geometric puzzle. A day with no wind was vital to ensure each piece fell perfectly in place.

Did you know that each hexagonal piece needs to match perfectly to a corresponding number on the next hexagonal piece. A true puzzle for the team on the ground - which added some pressure to get it up before the wind forced any change in plans.

The completed structure of the dome is specifically engineered to withstand Antarctica’s tough conditions while providing a cocoon of warmth and tranquillity to those inside.

Check out our previous posts to see the dome in action!

How do millions of years of ice sheet changes shape the survival of life in Antarctica?

This is what the team of scientists from SAEF has come to uncover. With White Desert's logistical support, the team will be studying the movement of Antarctica's glaciers and the resilience of living microbes, moss, and tiny springtails (more on those later).

After completing their training at Wolf's Fang, the first team of SAEF scientists seized a weather window and headed into the field to begin their work.

We're proud to support these groups again this season as they study the secrets of Antarctica's icy past to further understand how we can help protect this unique environment.

Stay tuned for updates, including the next team's meteorite research!

Taking the plunge in Antarctica is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for many visitors, and we’re all for embracing the adventure! That’s why we’ve built a designated cold plunge tub at our Whichaway Camp—to let you experience the thrill of icy waters while helping protect this pristine environment.

Plunging directly into the lakes may disturb fragile sediment layers, disrupt unique microbial life, and introduce contaminants that don’t belong in these ecosystems. By choosing the tub, you get all the exhilaration with little to no environmental impact.

It’s a small way to ensure our big memories leave little trace.

This season, we are proud to once again support a team of glaciologists and biodiversity researchers as they venture into the Holtedahl Mountains in Queen Maud Land. Their goal: to uncover how millions of years of ice sheet changes have shaped the survival of life in Antarctica.

Upon arrival, the group had the opportunity to visit Echo Camp and engage with some of our guests, answering questions about their research on ice. The team will be studying the movement of Antarctica's glaciers and the resilience of living microbes, moss and tiny springtails (more on those later).

The team undertaking this mission is comprised of eight scientists from Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future along with personnel from Monash University and the University of Tasmania. Their research will link Antarctica’s icy past to its fragile future, helping us understand and protect this unique environment in a warming world.

Stay tuned as we bring you more updates from the field!

This season, we’re thrilled to unveil the newest addition to Whichaway Camp: the Wellness Dome. Nestled among the frozen lakes of the Schirmacher Oasis, this clear sanctuary invites guests to pause and marvel at the untouched beauty of Antarctica. Surrounded by profound silence, diamond-like glaciers, and shimmering blue ice, the dome offers a warm, serene space to immerse in the magic of the polar landscape.

We were honoured to host Joëlle Sleebos for the grand unveiling of the Wellness Dome. Joëlle guided our guests and staff through thoughtfully curated classes, creating an inspiring atmosphere for mindfulness and well-being.

As part of the newly established Whichaway Wellness Hub, the dome complements our sauna and ice plunge, offering guests the revitalizing benefits of contrast therapy. Whether meditating, practising yoga, or sitting in quiet reflection, the Wellness Dome provides a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature – and yourself.

Step into this extraordinary space and experience a new dimension of well-being in the heart of Antarctica.

November through December is a remarkable time to observe emperor penguins in Antarctica, as the colonies come alive with activity.

The chicks, now a few weeks old, huddle together in crèches while their parents take turns fishing and returning with food. This season marks a time of growth—not only for the chicks but also for the dedicated fathers who endured the harsh winter protecting their eggs. It's a beautiful glimpse into the life of these remarkable birds as they thrive in their icy habitat.

Please note that all individuals photographed maintain a respectful distance from the penguins, in full compliance with IAATO regulations. Perspective in the image may not accurately reflect real-life distances.

Pioneering luxury in Antarctica

Established by record-breaking polar explorers, White Desert has been pioneering luxury in the interior of Antarctica since 2005, offering guests bespoke, environmentally-conscious experiences that include visiting the emperor penguins and the Geographic South Pole. Travelling by private jet to a blue ice runway in Queen Maud Land, guests have a wide choice of activities, including climbing, trekking, photographic safaris and exploring ice tunnels, all from the hospitality of White Desert’s Whichaway Oasis.

At the heart of White Desert’s mission is the desire to create a positive impact on Antarctica’s future through its tourism and science logistics programmes. A pioneer of low-impact practices in its operations and its eco-camps, the company has been carbon neutral since 2007 and actively recruits Antarctic Ambassadors to support IAATO’s goals of protecting – and inspiring the future stewardship of – Antarctica’s unique environment.
