Travelling as a group of Kenyans through different countries by road has truly been a journey filled with both challenges and unforgettable moments. It’s hard to ignore the reality of corruption that is prevalent on many of Africa's roads. For instance, an unfortunate oversight by an immigration officer at one of the borders resulted in a lengthy six-hour stop just 30 kilometres away from our next destination. It was frustrating, but after some negotiation, we managed to move forward, albeit after parting with significant amounts of money.

When we crossed the border into Malawi, we encountered yet another hurdle. For arriving after the official operating hours at the border crosspoint, we were asked for a bribe of KSHS 1000 per person for our group of 13. Thankfully, we managed to navigate this situation as well and continued on our journey.

Zambia proved to be particularly challenging, with unnecessary and sometimes hostile bribe requests and unhelpful police. However, we also experienced kindness from some officers, including one who issued a warning for travelling past 10 PM in a foreign registered vehicle, demonstrating that even in difficult situations, there can be moments of understanding and compassion.

These experiences, though testing, have taught us valuable lessons about resilience and adaptability. Each challenge we faced has only deepened our appreciation for the cultures we encountered and the bonds we formed as a group.

Ultimately, we believe that the richness of our experiences far outweighs the obstacles we faced. We travel again with renewed hope and understanding, eager to explore the world and learn from it.

Note: Some details are left out to protect the travellers from further harassment as they are still passing through the said countries on their return.
