'Cin cin!' is the most common way to say 'cheers' in Italian. This is a casual and informal toast that is commonly used among friends and family.

Be careful when offering a toast, though. Follow these rules so that, according to Italian superstition, you can avoid bad luck:

- Never raise a toast with a glass full of water.
- Don’t cross arms with anyone as you clink glasses.
- Before you take your first sip after the toast, tap the bottom of your glass on the table.

Cheers to a fantastic week ahead!

Do the Monday after Easter the way the Italians do - by celebrating Pasquetta!

Pasquetta literally means “little Easter,” but is taken to mean Easter Monday. While sometimes called “il lunedì dell’angelo” (“Monday of the angel”) for the biblical meeting of the women and the angel outside Jesus’s empty tomb, there is little religious nature to how the day is celebrated today.

Instead, it’s a day for family, food, and relaxation. Traditionally a day for the countryside, families escape to nature, packing a picnic lunch and enjoying the start of spring. Some people might go to a restaurant with friends to celebrate, but usually even the most ardent city dweller will find some green space.

So if you are able, take some time today to get outside. Pack a picnic lunch or call some friends for an impromptu cookout, and enjoy the spirit of this special day!

Traveling with food allergies can be complicated. But we’ve put together a few tips to help you navigate eating in Italy even if you have allergies -

1. Gluten - This is the land that gave us pizza and where nearly every restaurant offers a pasta course, so avoiding gluten can be tricky. But it’s not impossible. Keep an eye out for non-gluten “pasta” course options like polenta and risotto. Consider skipping the pasta course and going straight to the second meat or fish course. More and more restaurants are now offering gluten-free pasta, but be prepared to order an alternate dish just in case.

2. Dairy - Some people find that they can tolerate dairy products in Italy that they can’t eat at home. For those who don’t want to risk it, you’ve got options. There are quite a few gelato flavors that are naturally dairy-free. Look for the “sorbetti” options. Also, the base of most Italian dishes is olive oil, so butter isn’t often a concern.

3. Nuts - This is one where you’ll want to have a reference sheet with you to clearly describe your allergy to a waiter. Most of the time nuts are described by their individual names rather than by a catch-all word for “nuts.” So sit down with a dictionary or translation app, and jot down the different words you need to be on the lookout for. And remember, a seemingly nut-free thing like pesto is made with pine nuts, so it’s important to ask even if you don’t see nuts.

Fun fact - In Italy, peanut allergies aren’t really a thing. But allergies to fava beans (which are much more common in Italy) are! So don’t feel bad about bringing up your allergies. Let your waiter know and be open to unexpected allergen-free alternatives. You may just find your new favorite dish!

Benevento is a town rich in historical attractions. When we visit, we walk in the footsteps of the Roman Army that marched on the Appian Way from Rome to Brindisi. This triumphal arch was erected almost 2000 years ago, built to honor the Emperor Trajan and to celebrate his addition to the historic road.

The Arch of Trajan is decorated with depictions of events in the emperor’s life, including real and mythical events. It celebrates scenes of both peace and military through social works, conquests, and imperial divinity.

Have you ever been to Benevento?

We have a few spots still available for our September Taste of Campania Tour!

September is an ideal time to visit Italy. It offers all the beauty of the summer with the oppressive heat. The nights and early mornings are cool, and the days are beautiful.

Locals start to return to work and school in September, meaning holiday destinations tend to be less crowded. The number of international tourists also starts to drop.

It’s really the perfect time for our kind of tour - private, relaxed, and authentic. We experience the heart and soul of Italy, and there’s no better time to do that than in the fall.

When you visit Naples, you’ll likely encounter this curious-looking puff pastry - sfogliatelle.

Pronounced sfol-ya-tel-le, this sugary snack is a clam shaped flaky pastry with folds that give it almost a mermaid-like quality. It can hold all kinds of delicious fillings - whipped cream, a special custard with candied citrus peels, creamy ricotta, almond paste - or it can be enjoyed simply with a light dusting of powdered sugar.

Perfect with an espresso, make sure to enjoy a sfogliatella next time you’re in Naples!

The history of Valentine’s Day is a mysterious one.

One legend says that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Claudius ordered Valentine to be put to death when his actions were discovered.

Another tradition says that Valentine was a bishop who died for refusing to renounce his faith. Legend has it that during his imprisonment, Valentine fell in love with the blind daughter of a guard. He cured her, but because this motivated her and her father to convert, they were sentenced to be executed, too. The story continues that as the daughter waited in her solitary cell, he sent her a letter of encouragement, signing it “From your Valentine,” making it the first Valentine.

Whether legend or fact, we think it’s beautiful to have a day dedicated to love and romance! Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

Start your days in Italy with us with a cappuccino. But don’t try to order one after dinner!.

You’ll quickly notice in Italy that locals don’t order a cappuccino after 11am.

Why? It has everything to do with the milk. Italian tradition says that consuming milk after a meal is hard on your digestive system. Also, the large amount of milk in a cappuccino corresponds to a mini-meal all unto itself. Since Italian breakfasts tend to be small and sweet, the heaviness of the cappuccino is balanced out when consumed in the first hours of the day.

Of course, there’s no law against an afternoon or evening cappuccino. Just be prepared that you may raise a few eyebrows or be subject to some good-natured teasing about your coffee preferences if you order the drink after a meal.

It’s , and for families in Southern Italy that usually involves time with family, friends, and a homemade feast!

Traditionally, aunts, uncles, cousins, and that relative you can’t quite quantify gather around the table with empty stomachs and hearts, ready to be filled. It’s a chance for them to catch up, chat about the latest neighborhood gossip, and more. Sometimes, you’ll see the family embroiled in a round of Italian cards. They play for pennies, but there is always some prize for the winner. Just watch out for grandma… she can be sneaky!

You don’t have to have a large family living close by to celebrate like the Italians do. What makes Sundays so special is that they’re dedicated to doing (and eating) things and spending time with the people who feed your soul. So invite an old friend for a lunch date, try a new recipe with your partner, or invite your family over for pizza. Look for ways to incorporate that Old World togetherness in your day.

How are you spending your Sunday?

Southern Italy isn’t just known for its wine; it is the birthplace of limoncello, a citrus-based alcohol developed in the sun-kissed city of Sorrento.

It’s an after-dinner digestif made with lemons or oranges. Although, purists will tell you that limoncello can only be made from the Oval Sorrento lemon. And it’s best picked at noon!

Lemons aren’t endemic to the region. They were brought by Jewish immigrants traversing the Silk Road in the first century A.D. and became a staple in the city. Jesuit priests began developing a careful growing process in the 1600’s. Lemons have thrived in the Campania region ever since due to the unique microclimate of the Sorrento Peninsula.

Limoncello is traditionally served chilled after dinner or lunch. The taste and aroma is refreshing and is thought to contribute to the good mood of the table and good digestion!

What’s your favorite way to drink limoncello?

Mondays in Italy are a little different than we’re used to. It’s the traditional day of closure for museums and heritage sites. There are, of course, a few exceptions, but it’s generally best to avoid planning visits to archaeological sites, museums, or galleries on a Monday. Many shops are also closed, at least in the mornings.

What if you want to get dressed up for a fancy dinner on a Monday night? You may be in for some disappointment. Many Italian restaurants also close on Mondays.

Planning a trip to Italy involves a lot of moving parts, and timing visits to your favorite restaurants and landmarks is just part of it. Take the guesswork out of your next trip and join us for a tour this year. We take care of all the planning so that you can sit back and just enjoy the love, warmth, food, music, and culture of Italy!

Are you resolved to travel more this year? Here are a few tips to help you follow through and get the most from your travels:

1. Plan weekend getaways. These are a great way to feel like you’re exploring the world a bit without having to take vacation time. If you live on the East Coast of the US, you’d be surprised how quickly you can get to many European cities to take advantage of a long weekend.

2. Get out of your comfort zone. Take alternative forms of transportation, embrace unique accommodations, visit a new country, try a traditional dish, and make friends with the locals.

3. Don’t be afraid to travel solo. Stop waiting around for a friend, family member, or significant other to go. If you wait for other people to join you, you may be waiting forever. Instead, lean into the opportunity and use it as a springboard for trying something new.

4. Be present. The small moments in a cafe or pub, the people you meet… these are the travel experiences you’ll remember forever. Don’t be worried about getting the perfect picture for IG and actually use your PTO. Immerse yourself in your surroundings.

If Italy’s on your list, we invite you to come take a tour of Campania with us. We help you experience the true heart and soul of Italy - the small villages with views of the mountains, slow meals savoring the best of local food and wine, unique experiences, and great conversations with great people.

Our first tour of 2023 is coming up fast! Click the link in our bio to learn more and book your tour.

New Year’s in Italy is a holiday filled with tradition… and more than a little bit of superstition.

Want to bring yourself some luck this new year? Here’s how to do it like the Italians:

Eat dishes that include pork and lentils. Pork – usually in the form of cotechino (cooked sausage) or zampone (pig trotter) – represents life’s fullness and richness to come. Lentils, similarly, are eaten because they look like miniature coins—portending a prosperous new year ahead.

Throw out a pot or two. Some Italians, articularly in southern Italy, have traditionally launched their celebrations on New Year’s Eve by throwing old pots, pans, clothes, appliances, and even furniture out the window. It’s meant to symbolize “letting go” of the past to prepare yourself for the future. Although most Italians have abandoned the tradition, do watch your head on the streets of Naples on New Year’s Eve!

Give someone a sweet treat. To ensure a sweet new year, ancient Romans gave each other jars of dates and figs in honey, along with a bay branch for good fortune. Guess what? This hasn’t changed much, at least in Naples, where people exchange figs wrapped in laurel leaves.
What is your favorite New Year’s tradition?

For Italian-Americans with roots in Southern Italy, celebrating Christmas Eve with The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a much-loved, age-old tradition.

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a Christmas Eve celebration that brings families together the same way Thanksgiving does - with traditions that span generations, decades, and oceans.

It isn’t a religious celebration, but it does have roots in the Roman Catholic practice of not eating dairy or meat on the eve of some holidays, including Christmas. Pair that with the fact that fish were a plentiful food resource in southern Italy and that the number seven has Biblical significance, and you get the Feast of the Seven Fishes!

What’s your family’s favorite Christmas Eve tradition?

Campanian wine is our favorite. And for good reason!

Viticulture thrives thanks to an abundance of sunshine, dry hot summers, mild winters, a long growing season. The coastal breezes off of the Mediterranean blow in from the Tyrrhenian Sea and across the Apennine Mountains, tempering the heat to encourage a bright acidity in the fruit.

The volcanic soil plays a part as well. It keeps phylloxera at bay. Phylloxera is a sap-sucking insect that feeds on and destroys the roots of grapevines, and has affected almost every wine region on earth. But Campania has a very effective natural defense against it.

With over 100,000 acres of vines, there is a lot of variation in the wines of Campania. Higher rainfall on the inland slopes results in a Falanghina with fragrant notes, whereas on the coast, the climate is continental and tends to be more mellow.

Come taste Campania for yourself! You can learn more about our upcoming tours at the link in our bio.
