In August I attended the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival and had an amazing time! I saw around 50 lifers, met new friends, saw some amazing plants (omg saguaros!!), and took a ton of photos. Tucson was beautiful, with monsoon season keeping things green and not as hot as I expected for a desert. I will hopefully be able to go back in the future.
The bird life in Southeast Arizona is incredible and unique. There are several species that show up in this small part of Arizona that you can’t find anywhere else in the United States. One example is the Berylline Hummingbird, which is mostly limited to the foothills and highlands of western and southern Mexico. This male and a much shyer female have been visiting the feeders at the Santa Rita Lodge in Madera Canyon. Notice it’s beautiful green body and reddish wings? What a beautiful hummingbird!
