Why? because with friends like these who needs enemies. Africa needs writers who understand Africa is a continent with many countries all rich in diversity, and not a country. Writers who would write about her in a multidimensional manner, and not allow a rumored reputation to find its way into one of the first pages of the guidebook.

The Secret to Raising an Africa Traveler:

Never too early to start teaching our kids about their heritage. I am Cameroonian-American, and I promised myself to teach my daughter everything about Africa and its people before she turned teenager. With the help of Nigerian author Atinuke, I began to keep that promise. My three year old loves the illustrations, and plays finding the countries on my rotating globe. Can't wait to take her on her first trip to Africa when the pandemic is over. When she grows up, my dream is that she will travel with her friends of different nationalities, with whom she has shared her knowledge, to explore the motherland. Thank you Atinuke. Africa has some of the most skillful and passionate artisans. We see their work in shops across the United States and Europe. It is time we highlight their craft in colorful guidebooks to direct travelers to their stalls. With an increase in visitors, these craftsmen and women will finally earn a sustainable livelihood, gain respect, and have money placed directly into their hands. For those who have visited Europe, you would agree that watching artisans at work is thrilling and unforgettable for both artisan and visitor. Here is how "l'afrique en miniature" is described on Lonely Planet. As a Cameroonian, this portrayal is upsetting. The author uses the words "crazed" which is usually used when referring to killers, "sultry" 'bizarre" and 'linguistic jigsaw" Africa's tourism industry cannot sustain its growth with such depictions.

For decades, the narratives of western publishers of travel guidebooks have been tinged with racism and unconscious bias. I have posted some of Lonely Planet's and Rough guides's, two top travel publishers, portrayals/images of Africa. It is time for Africans to reintroduce the world to our land. Tell the world Africa is more than a land of safaris. It is a land of incredible beauty, indomitable cultures, rich traditions, and friendly people.
The Consortium stands ready to work with each African country to create books that contain evocative descriptions and striking images of the country’s cities, monuments, culture, and natural scenery; books showcasing Africa’s hundreds of amazing diverse attractions in books and leaflets rich with atmospheric detail, tips and colorful maps.
