La Boca, the colourful neighbourhood in Buenos Aires 💃
In 1830, immigrants from Genoa Italy began settling in La Boca, and with not much money around they found creative ways to build themselves houses.
As they were close to the waterfront, they found scrap materials from the ship yards such as corrugated metal and wooden planks which they used to build the structures for their homes.
To make the neighbourhood feel brighter, they would take leftover paint from the ship building yards to paint the metal & wood, but there often wouldn’t be enough paint leftover to paint a whole house. So they painted each side of the house in different colours, making the whole neighbourhood a colourful patchwork!
Those are the houses we see today. Visitors head here to see the vibrant houses, lively music, tango dancers & street art.
