Successfully passing Jewish values on to the next generation requires our children receive a message that soars well beyond mere victimhood.

Israel's borders may be closed for now, but even that can't stop JNF missions to Israel! I had such a pleasure guiding the JNF West Coast mission last week, which was featured in this CBS news video. This week I'm enjoying touring with JNFuture. You too can join a virtual tour of Israel! Check out https://www.jnf.org/travel-pages/jnf-virtual-tours-to-israel

Took a break this week from Corona-related news to visit Horvat Sokha, also called "Givat Hatormosim" or "Lupine Hill" after the purple flowers that cover it each spring. This hill also has Biblical significance-- it is the site where the Israelites camped during their famed battle with the Philistines in which David triumphed over Goliath. Lupines are beautiful, and even edible, but don't pick them! Like many Israeli wildflowers, they're protected by law. I left them for future visitors to enjoy.

After voting on this beautiful election day, we took the opportunity to visit the flowering Judean desert at the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea. This is Israel's third election this year-- but as they say, third time's the charm! Hoping that in the days that come, our leaders will succeed in putting together a balanced coalition that represents the diversity of Israel's society.

It's been a wet winter! Earlier this month, Israel's Water Authority held a meeting to determine when would be the best time to open the Degania Dam in order to allow excess water from the Kinneret to flow into the Jordan River. The Kinneret is currently just one meter below the upper red line (208.8 meters below sea level) that signifies its maximum capacity. The dam was constructed in the 1930s and has been opened fully only once before, in May 2013.

Every spring, the Kalaniyot (anemone) flowers decorate the fields of the northern Negev. These flowers are not only beautiful: they also tell an inspiring story of how environmental awareness can make a tremendous impact. Years ago, these flowers were overpicked to the point that it became rare to see the red blooms outside. In 1963, the anemone and several other dozen wildflowers were declared protected species, and picking them was outlawed. Furthermore, an educational campaign launched by Uri Paz spread public awareness about the importance of leaving the flowers in the field for others to enjoy.
The anemone will continue to bloom throughout February-- don't miss the chance to see them!

One of my favorite places to hike is Nachal El Al in the Golan. The hike passes by two waterfalls, the White Waterfall and the Black Waterfall, named after the type of rock over which they fall. These photos are from last spring. As we celebrate Tu Bishvat, I look forward to more days of hiking ahead this year!
