When we arrived in downtown Newport the sound of the Sea Lions echoed everywhere! 🌊

From a distance we could see a huge colony of them across from the marina....

Thinking that we were cool; we walked to the furthest point of the docks, crossing over commercial boat lines and aiming to get as close as possible for photos!

The ones taken with the framing of the bridge were pretty enough, and def had fun shooting a zillion jellyfish along the way.

However, after we left the marina and walked into the downtown around the bay, the sound (+ smell 😉) of the Sea Lions became pervasive.

Turns out there was a dock set up specifically for the local pinnipeds and human tourists 🤦‍♀️

It was fascinating to watch their interactions at such close proximity.

The alpha males each dominated a section of the dock, which they guarded by talking smack + some extreme body language anytime a newbie attemped to join the party!

The younger/smallest ones who’d made it onto the float snuggled under their larger bro’s and kept their eyes firmly closed!

You could guess their thought process, if I can’t see you - you can’t see me - and I can stay warm and cozy without getting kicked off the island 😉

It was an amazing experience to see them in a colony from so close-up, and we were enthralled for over an hour watching them!
