Historical building of the week: Nyakasura School - Fort Portal

The school was initiated in 1926 by a retired Scottish army officer, Ernest Calwell.

Calwell had taught at the elite King’s College Budo near Kampala until he came to Tooro where King Kyebambe III gave him land to start a similar school in Western Uganda.

Commander Calwell built the school along British public-school lines, including the country’s first cricket pitch.

The School was also the first to produce electricity, thanks to a small dam built in 1930. Calwell also had the students wear kilts as part of the school uniform, as can still be seen today!

While passing by our orphanage, you may also love to include a walk to the twin lakes in Bunyaruguru adjacent to Queen Elizabeth national park with our kids. This experience will give you opportunity to spend more time with our kids, learn more about them and also learn more about nature endowments in the area. You are required to book earlier for this to be arranged.

ANTT - A Different Look at Africa

This page brings together groups, organisations and businesses that offer unique, grass-roots based tourism opportunities across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Stories and articles are from any source that offers an experience that is “different” from the typical safari based offerings that most outsiders think of.

The focus is on activities that bring the visitor close to the areas and communities they visit, that support isolated rural populations and that have a minimal environmental footprint.

Many events are activity based, with cycle touring and hiking featuring prominently.
