Cabo Verde is an island country spanning an archipelago of ten volcanic islands. The islands were uninhabitated until the 15th century when the Portuguese colonized the islands and established Europe's first settlement in the tropics. The islands were used as a slave trading post until 1878 when slavery was finally abolished. Today, Cabo Verde is considered one of the most democratic and developed countries in Africa. The island of Sal (picture) is made of sand/desert (=great beaches) and the main income is tourism. Kite surfing is big here, and the island is home to world champion Mitu Monteiro. Some of the other islands, such as Sao Nicolau, are lush, mountainous and ideal for hiking.
