Scooter Overland Adventure Route The SOAR is series of mostly low-speed (25-45 mph) roads that make a scenic loop of TN+ edge KY, VA, and NC.

The Scooter Overland Adventure Route (SOAR), the majority of which are a series of low-speed (25-45 mph) city, county (paved and 3 miles of unpaved) and state roads that, when linked together, will traverse scenic landscapes and forgotten towns of Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina.

Riding parts of Section 6 of the SOAR Route and encountered high water just outside of Cookeville, Tennessee. This is at the intersection of Poplar Grove Road and Macedonia Cemetery Road. The river we are trying to cross is Falling Water River. This is the second time in several years that I was unable to make it across. We’re going to have a suggested detour that you can download to get around this if you encounter the same thing.

Another great video on driving the W Road northwest (leaving) Chattanooga. This video is brought to us by the Chattanooga Free Press. The way the scooter route is laid out we have suggested traveling it clockwise which would have you climbing (up) Signal Mountain as in the first part of this video. Stay safe! Be courteous; stay curious!🛵

The Times Free Press took a ride up the W Road with Signal Mountain resident Nelson Irvine. Irvine, 82, has lived on Signal Mountain for 40 years and grew up...

I thought I had posted this information in one of my previous posts, but it seems to have vanished. The daily route destinations for the Scooter Overland Adventure Route are as follows:

Section 1 begins at Crossville, Tennessee and continues 156 miles to Middlesboro Kentucky.

Section 2 begins in Middlesboro, Kentucky and then continues to Damascus, Virginia for this days total of 178 miles.

The daily total for Section 3 is 154 miles beginning at Damascus, Virginia leading to Newport, Tennessee.

From Newport, Tennessee to Cleveland, Tennessee is the longest day at 235 miles. This is following Section 4. This section has some of your favorite roads. The Foothills Parkway, Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway.

Section 5 you’ll be leaving Cleveland, Tennessee and heading to Woodbury, Tennessee for a total distance of 192 miles.

Section 6 is from Woodbury Tennessee to Crossville, Tennessee for 177 miles.

We setup this route so that if you trailer your two wheeler to any point along the route you will return to your tow vehicle/trailer. Helps with the logistics… When we followed the suggested adventure motorcycle route ‘Mid Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route’ (MABDR) for eight days it took another 2 1/2 days to get back home on some rather boring roads. Ditto when we followed the ‘Ride the Divide’ route (The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route) that follows the continental divide 2,700 miles from Banff, Canada to the Mexican border… Logistics (time away) came in to play. But I must say the roads weren’t boring on the way back!

Bill with his red 150cc Kymco scooter on Section 1 of the Scooter Route just outside of Crossville, TN.
Dave admiring the view of Chattanooga from Signal Mountain, then a steep descent soon finds us along the Tennessee River. Hidden among the trees are the ruins of Shake Rag. The people of this community would stand along the rivers edge and shake a rag to catch the attention of passing steam boat crews and catch a ride upstream to Chattanooga. This is along Section 5.
The last picture was taken at Brush Creek in front of an abandoned feed store next to the former Tennessee Central Railroad while finalizing roads chosen for Section 6. During the review we decided to reroute a portion several miles past this point just outside the town of Lancaster. In this photo we stopped in the shade this super hot day to relax and discuss the final SOAR Route.

Had some business to take care of in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We followed the Sequatchie Valley, then at Dunlap left this valley and drove up the Cumberland Plateau. Saw these new signs posted along the way at an overlook describing geologic history of Sequatchie Valley below us. Section 5 of the SOAR follows this valley along it’s east side reaching Pikeville then ascends the western side of this valley, heading towards Fall Creek Falls State Park.

Until we get a videographer to showcase the Scooter Route we’ll “borrow” clips from other YouTube videos.
In this video, beginning at 6:40 you’ll begin paralleling the old Tennessee Central Railroad, now the Nashville & Eastern, just east of Watertown. You’ll follow this for several miles and then veer southeast to Alexandria. At 8:40 you will again intercept the railroad at Brush Creek. Here the SOAR parallels the N&E for several miles until just outside of Lancaster where the railroad continues north, but we continue east along the Caney Fork River eventually crossing over Center Hill Dam complete with an overlook and interpretive center. Following the SOAR north along this 45mph highway you’ll again encounter the railroad at the community of Buffalo Valley. In this area, you may wish to camp or rent a lodge at Edgar Evans state park and spend a day rafting the Caney Fork at one of the local outfitters.
The SOAR Route and the N&E again parallel each other through Buffalo Valley, Silver point, Roberts Switch, Boma, and into Baxter where there are plenty of murals and a depot/museum. Be sure to shop for supplies at the Baxter Bi-Rite grocery shown at 27:12 in this video. We need to keep the small town groceries going! Just up the street there is also a restaurant.
From Baxter we again leave the N&E rejoining it on the westside of Cookeville as shown on this video at 32:12. plenty of restaurants in this area plus the depot, locomotive, and well… Just enjoy the video! Better yet get out and ride!
At 1:12:26 center Hill Dam is shown that the SOAR Route passes over.
This is along section 6 of the SOAR Route.

Got a chance to help work on this Cushman paratrooper model scooter with a build date of April 1944. It was having carburetor issues and sediment bowl leaking badly. Anyway, got it straightened out and gave it a test ride here at my house.

Located west of Crossville, Tennessee, Section 6 briefly passes the Caney Fork River featuring a picturesque cascade, while the SOAR Route crosses the river on a slender bridge in the background. Curiosity leads me for a closer examination.

Damascus, Virginia, situated along our scooter route, suffered substantial impact from Hurricane Helene. This town, aptly nicknamed Trail Town, serves as a convergence point for multiple trails, including the SOAR Route, Appalachian Trail, Mid-Atlantic Backcountry Discovery Route…MABDR…for dual sport motorcyclists, and the Virginia Creeper Trail, frequented by hikers and bicyclists. The following video shows some of the damage to this community.

Approximately 8 miles from the beginning of Section 1, a majestic 160-year-old sycamore tree, the second-largest in Tennessee, is located at the intersection of Chestnut Hill Road and Westchester Drive, in front of a horse stable. The stable's closure on December 31, due to land sale for development, (owners refused to renew lease)…poses uncertainty regarding the tree's fate.
