It was Stijn’s and Johan’s first birding experience and we made it count! They came all the way from Belgium to Colonia with a particular request: they wanted to see as many birds as possible from the ones mentioned in Neruda’s poem “Vienen los pájaros”. We had five possible targets with reasonable chances of connecting with, and we got all of them by midday: cardinals who “bled the dawn”, hummingbirds that “kept the sparks of lightning”, the parrots like “ingots of green gold”, “engineer” horneros, and the Rufous-Collard Sparrow with “its flute recently obtained from the eternity of water”. Take that traditional twitching! We also had some pretty neat sightings, including two rare Lake Ducks showing up for the first time at Las Delicias wetland, alongside the largest grebe in the world (Great Grebe). We got two range restricted Warbling Finches, some beautiful tanagers, and shared a picnic lunch with uninvited Great Kiskadees and Horneros as a guest. Hard to top a day like that, thanks to both of you guys for a great experience!

🇬🇧: On this tour we had two days of photographing birds along the Eastern Hills and the Atlantic Coast. We started at the gorgeous village of Villa Serrana, walking around the pond and exploring the forests along the streets. I was pretty amazed by how close some birds came up to us, unafraid of our presence: Chalk-browed Mockingbirds, Rufous-collared Sparrows and surprisingly Golden-billed Saltators came up on our picnic table. The second day was focused on coastal birds, we drove several km stopping at the coastal lagoons, marshes, and rocky peninsulas. I really liked the slow pace we took, stopping to enjoy the moment and trying to get good shots. The stars of this day were definitely a family of Scarlet-headed Blackbirds, who gave us a show just a few meters from the camera. Thanks for an enjoyable trip, some good birding, leisure time, and specially some good talks!
