Celebrating the reigning monarch's birthday has been a tradition since the end of the 18th century. In 1961, a date was chosen for "Groussherzogsgebuertsdag": 23 June. The annual celebrations have been held on this date ever since, even though the Grand Duke's birthday is on another day.

Celebrations in the capital kick off the day before (22 June) with the country's largest public festival, including the torch procession (Fakelzuch) and traditional fireworks. and then continue into the small hours, with all kinds of concerts and parties taking place on café terraces and specially constructed stages across the city. National Day itself is reserved for official events and ceremonies, such as the military parade and the Te Deum, as well as a Children's Play Day.

Every Ascension Thursday, nearly 20,000 faithful, most of them from the Portuguese community, take part in the pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima above Wiltz. They thus pay homage to Our Lady of Fatima, the Virgin Mary who appeared six times in 1917 to three children in Fatima, a small village in central Portugal.

The fact that the pilgrimage became a proper popular festival and a tradition is owed to the Portuguese community. In 1968, around a hundred members of that community launched the first pilgrimage. They were essentially immigrant workers of the 1960s, for whom the sanctuary represented a link with their homeland

As one of the few countries we are celebrating Europe Day as a public holiday and it is tomorrow (09.05.2023)

On 9 May 1950 Luxembourg-born Robert Schuman, then French foreign minister, presented the Schuman declaration, a plan he developed together with Jean Monnet. The idea behind the plan was to unite the German and French coal and steel productions under one authority and therefore keeping peace.

The cooperation was a success and more European countries were encouraged to join, with Luxembourg among the firsts.

The European Coal and Steel Community was formally established in 1951 by signing the Treaty of Paris, creating the foundations of the European Union we know today.

The Octave, the country's main religious ceremony, is celebrated in honour of the Virgin Mary. For two weeks, from the 3rd to the 5th Sunday after Easter, thousands of believers from the Greater Region go on pilgrimage to Luxembourg City to visit the statue of the Virgin Mary in the Cathedral “Notre-Dame de Luxembourg”. In honour of the Octave, a market, commonly called "Mäertchen", is organised at Place Guillaume II and Place de la Constitution. The origins of this religious festival date back to the 17th century. At a time when the country was regularly ravaged by epidemics, wars and famine, the Virgin Mary was chosen as the consoler of the afflicted (consolatrix afflictorum).
