Resorts with wide-open spaces are great for families with kids, especially little ones.

Centara Grand, The Slate (pictured), Katathani, Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach, Movenpick Karon and The Old Phuket are all great options.

Some of the Best Water Parks in Phuket

Splash Jungle is a massive water park with a huge array of water slides for the tiny tots to the bravest dare devils. Float around the lazy river, grab a bite to eat and hit the water slides for round two of your adrenaline fix. And it can continue all day long. The park is attached to Splash Beach Resort. Depending on your flight times a night in the resort and a day at the water park could be perfect timing as it's very near the airport. Tire the kids out for the long haul flight with water park fun.

Blue Tree is the newest water park in Phuket and located in the middle of the island. It has something for everyone in the family with a huge lagoon-style pool, water slides, zip lining, restaurants and a mini shopping center. You can easily spend most of the day there. If you get too hot you can go to the other extreme and try out their artificial ice arena.

Rawai Park is a smaller version of the previous places mentioned. It is a waterpark and playground with indoor, outdoor and undercover play areas and a restaurant and a lovely place to spend a long morning or afternoon. Kids go wild for the foam that is pumped into the pool every hour. Especially younger kids will be entertained and hop from area to area happily.

Kathu Connection is aimed more towards the adults with a massive slip-fly slide and emphasis on pool parties and fun times at the pool bar. Pretty fun watching the adventurous adults fly through the air and into pool as they take on the massive water slide (insurance included in the ticket price). There is a kids area with smaller water slides and heaps of different pools. If you have older kids or teens it is probably a winner for your family.

Catch Junior is a new kids water park connected to the well-known Catch Beach Club in Bang Tao Beach area. It's great for the little kids with water slides, a huge jump pillow and wall and rope climbing. Plus, there is a very high level of service and great food. Right on the beach so you can mix it up with an ocean swim to stretch out the day water fun.

Dinosea World Park is a dinosaur-themed water park a short drive out of Phuket in Phang Nga province. It is much more affordable than the water parks in Phuket and also not as fancy so keep your expectations reasonable. A day trip out of Phuket to see local areas of Khao Lak and Phang Nga with a stop at the water park could be fun. The website is down but heaps more info on Trip Advisor.

Travel tip: Kids are always so happy exploring new places. So keep the first few days plan free. Let them wander and experience the new streets around where you are staying, meet the locals, try the food, sit in the back of a tuk tuk and don't even go anywhere - it's all super fascinating to them.

I hope you are managing to stay positive in this time of coronavirus uncertainty and we are looking forward to a new and brighter future after some time it will take for things to get back to normal. Phuket and Thailand has a history of bouncing back nicely to normal after unexpected events so we hold onto this memory of the positive, shining spirits Thai and foreigners living here have shown in the past.

If not easy getting in your shopping time with the kids in tow. If you want a chance to get a decent collection of shopping bags in the air con head to Jung Celon Shopping Mall in Patong. And drop the kids off to Froggies trampoline park on the top floor next to the movie theater.

A parent/care giver can watch from inside or from the side lines and there's always plenty of staff watching the kids.

Your ticket gets you 1 hour which is usually plenty of time. It's clean and safe. There is a climbing gym attached which is fun for the kids too. You have to buy socks before going in and they only let you use their socks.

Don't expect any help from the kids carrying your shopping bags afterwards. They will be totally exhausted and sweaty from their bouncy hour of fun.
