The chagim are over but there is still something to look forward to! On Thursday October 31, I will be leading a 👻👻GHOST TOUR 👻👻 in the dark Jerusalem night. We will start in Yemin Moshe and walk via Kettef Hinom down to the Valley of Hell. We will continue through a tunnel up to Mt Zion- the back yard of the Old City with plenty of spooky potential! Sighting of ghosts not guaranteed but great stories are.
*Hours 6.30 to 9:30 pm* app. Cost 60 shekels. Sign up. Sara Yarden, licensed tour guide 0502644412

I checked the location of the shelters and headed out for a tour of the German Colony. It was as lovely as ever, a 150-year old German village in the heart of modern Jerusalem. I chatted with the sisters at St Charles Borromeo. Also they are lacking foreign visitors. So with flights abroad cancelled: book a tour of a Jerusalem neighborhood with me and a night at St Charles German Hospice!

Exploring a site I actually never been to before: the grape cluster cave in Ramat Eshkol. It's a funeral compound from the first century with beautiful Hellenist carvings, some depicting grapes- hence the name. Do what I did! Take a tour and visit a hidden gem of Jerusalem. Summer Fridays are long and beautiful. WhatsApp 0502644412 to book a tour.

The mosque of Lifta with verses from Surat Maryam written around the prayer niche. The verses tell the story of Zachary, the father of John the Baptist, a story that in Christian tradition is connected to Ein Kerem located some kilometers further south. Come with me on a tour to discover the multi religious heritage of the Jerusalem Hills!

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel. I went to the Begin Center to see photos from Warsaw during the German occupation. Even though most of them are taken by German soldiers, seeking pictures of stereotypical Jews, they are still a testimony to a people fighting to survive. The exhibit is created together by the Polish Warsaw Uprising Museum. It goes through May, free entrance. Highly recommend.

And now for something completely different: my friend Annabelle is a professional story teller, weaving together history, folktales, and autobiographical pieces into colorful, magical tapestries. Come and listen to her latest program “Rescue ‘29 & ‘23. Stories of women who rescue themselves and others.”, dealing with unexpected rescue and humanity during the riots of 1929 and attacks in the Gaza Envelope of 2023.

Exploring your own neighborhood can be very rewarding. Today we went to Palmach Street to get to know female heroes: Zohara, Netiva, Haviva and no less than two Saras. Of course we also included the legendary Duvshanit cafe, still going strong after 54 years.

Evening tour in the Hinnom Valley and on Mt Zion. We met Sir Montefiore's ghost and David's spirit. We heard of child offerings to Moloch, the blood field of Judas and imagined skeleton hands stretching out towards the sky.
A scary tour is a great way to spend an evening and to see Jerusalem in a different light. WhatsApp 0502644412

Ein Kerem on a sunny spring day ☀️
So beautiful I could have read the phone book and it still would have been a great tour. But I talked about women, inspired by last week's women's day. Saint Mary and Saint Elizabeth. Archduchess Elisabeth and Rachel Yannait. Sisters of Zion and Sisters of Charity. As if that wouldn't have been enough, we met an amazing scribal artist, bumped in to a local resident who told us the story of her family's aliya from Yemen and finished of with coffee at Cafe Ita.
Join me for a spring time tour of a Jerusalem neighborhood. WhatsApp 0502644412

Yesterday Michaela and I went for training about how to guide Mt Herzl as Yad Vashem guides. We focused on Holocaust survivors who were they last members of their families and who fell in the struggle to establish the State. Of course our sad present reality was present, with a sign for the most recent military funeral. Afterwards we hiked down to Ein Kerem. It was a beautiful day, the memories of death and the beginning of spring and new life.

Mitzpetel is an empty hill bordering the Jerusalem neighborhood of East Talpiyot. In the early spring it's covered with blue lupines. We all come here to take pictures of ourselves and our beloved ones in the sea of blue. A treat of nature in a rapidly built-up city. 💙 In the distance, you can see Herodium, where Herod designed his final resting place. Would Herod, who always made sure to defeat and subdue nature in his masterly construction, not even stopping at re-sculpting a mountain, have understood our modern need for Mitzpetel and the miracle of a simple flower?

I gave a tour of Baka'a today, about the charming buildings and the people who lived in them. We talked about the glamorous cosmopolitan days of the British Mandate but also about difficult issues like fate of the neighborhood in the war of 1948. People we mentioned include Baba Sali, Marika Gaitanoupolos and Edward Keith Roach. Join me to get to know your own Jerusalem neighborhood. WhatsApp 0502-644412

Under heavy skies I discovered Ein Kerem today with fellow tour guide and Ein Kerem local Olga Avigail . The cyklamen and almond trees were blossoming and the drizzle didn't detract from nature's beauty. The village now spots two kosher restaurants to warm up afterwards.
Join us for a tour of picturesque Ein Kerem with focus on nature, Christianity or local crafts and art initiatives. Or just come and enjoy the beauty of the place! 0502644412

Today I will be guiding a private tour in Abu Tor. I can't help but sneaking in some love stories because of Valentine's Day: Leah Abushedid's courtship with Itamar Ben Avi, the son of Eliezer Ben Yehuda, is probably the most famous in Jerusalem, breaking all social boundaries and with a happy end. Lehavdil, the marriage of the Egyptian princess Fawzia to Muhammed Reza, heir to the Persian throne, ended in divorce even though it was celebrated in style at the Persian consulate in Abu Tor. For more love stories - or other tours- be in touch! 0502644412

I just got back from a tour to Rome. To me, it was a continuation of Jerusalem, the same people, the same stories and sometimes even objects and holiness transfered from Jerusalem.
SCALA SANTA: the stairs Jesus walked up to be sentenced by Pilate. Brought from Jerusalem by Helena, mother of Roman Emperor Constantine.
SANTA CROCE IN GERUSALEMME: consecrated in 325 to house the relics of the Passion of Jesus, including a piece of the cross also brought by Helena. The basilica's floor was once covered with soil from Jerusalem, turning a visit to the church into an actual pilgrimage to the holy city.
ST PETER'S TOMB. I wanted to put a stone on it, after all he was a Galilean Jew, but it was not accessible.
THE ARCH OF TITUS: The Romans destroyed Jerusalem and carried off the menorah, but the ideas from Jerusalem conquered Rome from within.
