The privately owned St. Kitts Scenic Railway commenced running tourist trains on 28 January 2003. The scheme is run in an unusual partnership between the government and a private enterprise.

The narrow gauge St. Kitts scenic railway is one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. Originally built in 1912 to deliver sugarcane from the fields to the sugar mill in Basseterre, the "Last Railway in the West Indies" now provides a fascinating way for visitors to see the island from the comfort of modern passenger train cars and sightseeing buses. The railway hugs the Northeastern coastline where spectacular vistas of ocean, surf, cliffs, and lush vegetation surround you. The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning deep ""ghauts"", or canyons, and winds through small villages and farms. Dark green rainforests are skirted by rippling fields of sugar cane, with the volcanic cone of Mt. Liamuiga rising above the railway. This unique rail and highway experience allows visitors the opportunity to see the island in a very short period of time. Your guide will point out all the sights as the train passes old sugar estates with abandoned windmills and chimneys.

St. Kitts - Nevis Sugar Factory

On the 20th February 1912, the factory was officially opened by Mrs. Moody Stuart. There were both British and local share holders in the new enterprise. This marked the change from the old muscovado mills on the estates to a modern central operation under the name St. Kitts (Basseterre) Sugar Factory. A whole complex developed around the factory providing accommodation for management and middle management. It became the largest employer on the island. From 1940 onwards, negotiations between factory management and the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union were an important factor in the management of personnel in the industry.

The Factory was a training ground for skilled tradesmen on the island. The work produced in its workshops was so accurate that, from time to time, replacement parts for airplanes were ordered when they could not be readily obtained. Eventually an apprenticeship scheme was introduced through which boys aged 16 to 18 could sit a test and on passing would be taken on as apprentices for five years. They were given hands-on experience in workshops and taught English, Mechanical Drawing, Math and Science. Some of these young men eventually set up their own businesses.

In 1972 a report on the sugar industry highlighted the urgency of improving productivity. It recommended that a central company should be set up to run an integrated industry run by private investors and Government. The London interests preferred opted to sell its shares to Government as it was not interested in becoming a minority shareholder. After lengthy negotiations, on the 17th December 1976, the factory, the land it was on, the machinery some of which needed replacing, and the railway were sold to Government for the price of one million pounds.

The acquisition by government of the factory and the estates was intended to keep the sugar industry alive and facilitate continued employment. However the conditions that had caused the decline persisted, and when the price of sugar would not recover a decision was finally made to close the industry in July 2005.

在1972年，一篇報導重點提出了工廠需要提升生產力。他建議中央集團需要整合及領導來自政府及私家的企業。英國的股東因此想賣他們的股份給政府因為他們不想成為小股東。經過漫長的談判，工廠於1976年12月17日以一百萬英鎊的價錢賣給了政府。

政府獲得的工廠將照常營運及就業。但是基於各種因素導致糖價格持續下降，工廠不得已於2005年7月關閉。

Culture in St.Kitts and Nevis doesn't stop at historical landmarks and buildings and or folklore, it goes as far as food. In St.Kitts and Nevis we offer a variety of street food to locals and tourists. St. Kitts and Nevis and ROC Taiwan established formal diplomatic ties in September 1983.
Taiwan was one of the first nations that established relations with SKN when we attained our Independence.
In 2008, the Embassy of SKN in Taiwan was opened and H.E. Jasmine Huggins was appointed as
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. The two nations celebrated 36 years of partnership on September 19th 2020.

Over the years, SKN has benefited from various projects and assistance from Taiwan
in the fields of Education, Public Health Infrastructure Development, Agriculture and Information Technology. Every year the government of Taiwan gives 15-20 citizens scholarships to pursue either a Bachelor, Masters or Doctorate degree in Taiwan, with MOFA and ICDF.

In 2017,Taiwan granted visa-waiver to SKN nationals for up to 30 days.
This was a significant achievement for the bilateral relations between the two nations.

Accepting a medal from St Kitts and Nevis, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said on Monday July 15th marked the long-term partnership between the two countries.
Tsai was conferred with the Order of Saint Christopher and Nevis by Tapley Seaton, governor-general of the Caribbean nation. This is the “biggest recognition for the long-term friendship and development of partnership” between Taiwan and St Kitts and Nevis, she said.Taiwan was the first county to establish formal relations with St Kitts and Nevis, which became an independent state in 1983. Receiving the medal from Seaton, who played an important part in developing diplomatic relations, is “particularly meaningful,” Tsai said.

聖克里斯多福及尼維斯以及台灣在1983年九月建立了正式的邦交關係。

台灣是自從聖克里斯多福及尼維斯宣告獨立後最早與聖克里斯多福及尼維斯建立關係的國家之一。

When traveling the island, there are many artifacts and historical sites that represents our rich cultural heritage, built by our African ancestors or came about as a result of natural disasters. From the Independence Square original called the Pall Mall Square, where the slaves were sold in Basseterre, the many limestone mills located around the island, Brimstone Hill Fortress, that was built to African slave labour to the exacting standards of the British military to protect the coastline from a sea attack and to provide a safe refuge for the island’s citizens. Visitors know it as the St. Kitts and Nevis National Carnival. The locals call it Sugar Mas. But whatever you refer to it as, one thing’s for sure: There’s no better way to experience Kittitian culture.

Sugar Mas, traditionally held in the month of December and culminating on the 2nd January is unique as it is the last and first Carnival on the region’s Carnival Calendar. It is the largest National event in St Kitts and Nevis and it represents a time of year when residents, returning nationals and visitors are united in celebration.

觀光客們把這節日稱為聖基茨和尼維斯嘉年華。當地人則稱它為Sugar Mas。但無論你怎麼叫他，我們能保證你：沒有更好的方式來體驗聖基茨的文化了。

The sister Islands has no shortage of history and cultural heritage, from the Gibraltar of the Caribbean The Brimstone Hill Fortress, the many mills around the island, built by the slaves, to the famous fertility rocks located in one of the island's first Town Old Road. All with their own story. The fertility stones are said to increase a man and a woman's fertility rate, there is a myth that these rocks are the reason behind the high fertility rate of women living in the area.

Saint Kitts and Nevis has one of the longest written histories in the Caribbean, both islands being among Spain's and England's first colonies in the archipelago. Despite being only two miles apart and quite diminutive in size, Saint Kitts and Nevis was widely recognized as being separate entities with distinct identities until the islands were forcibly united in the late 19th century.

Since independence in 1983, the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis has been an independent member of the Commonwealth, with the British monarch as its head of state. An appointed governor-general represents the crown. The prime minister, who together with other ministers is a member of the cabinet, is the head of government. The monarch and the National Assembly constitute the parliament, some of whose members are appointed. The island of Nevis enjoys a certain amount of autonomy within the federal structure; it has its own premier and legislature, and the constitution provides for it to secede from the federation if certain procedures are followed. There is universal adult suffrage.

The population of St. Kitts and Nevis is 53,821 in July, 2020. St. Kitts is 68 square miles while Nevis is 36 square miles in size.
