Always a special treat to see the rarest goose species in the world, the Nene! While everyone wants to get up close to these amazing birds, it’s best to keep your distance to not disturb their natural behavior. Often we see Nenes attracted to parking lots by people feeding them only to get hit by a car. As much as it is cool to see them come walking up to you, the reason they’re doing that is because they had been getting handouts. It’s really nice to see some Nene in a wilderness area that as soon as they see you, they make their presence known to let you know not to get any closer! Just acting naturally!! This video was recorded with an 800mm telephoto lens to not disturb the birds anymore than we did already.

Kīlauea volcano's middle East Rift Zone eruption resumed late on September 16, 2024, and continues this morning within Nāpau Crater in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists conducted an overflight to document the eruption and assess hazards. Geologists observed fountaining from eruptive fissures and active lava flows on the floor of Nāpau Crater, just downrift (northeast) of the September 15 eruptive fissure.

The current activity is restricted to Kīlaueaʻs upper-to-middle East Rift Zone, in a remote and closed area of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Due to the remote location, the eruption does not currently pose an immediate threat to human life or infrastructure. Continued gas emissions from the eruptive fissures may pose a hazard to humans downwind of the eruption site.

Information about the volcano and status updates are at https://www.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/volcano-updates

Interesting stuff from the scientists at HVO!

Let's get this out of the way first: Kīlauea volcano is not erupting.

Now on to recent events: the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to track seismicity and elevated rates of ground deformation in Kīlauea’s middle East Rift Zone following the June 22–25 upper East Rift Zone intrusion within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

These observations indicate that magma is accumulating beneath the ground in the area of Makaopuhi Crater and Napau Crater, a well-known magma storage region on Kīlauea’s remote middle East Rift Zone.

It is not possible to forecast an exact outcome of this activity. Here are some possible scenarios that could play out in the coming days to weeks:

● No eruption: Magma accumulation continues to slow or stop below the surface near Makaopuhi Crater and does not result in an eruption.

● Upper to Middle East Rift Zone intrusion or eruption: New pulses of magma could be transferred from the summit to the MERZ below the surface to the area from Maunaulu to Napau Crater, leading to an intrusion or eruption in the upper to middle East Rift Zone within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. In this scenario, we would expect to see increased rates of earthquakes in the upper to middle East Rift Zone along with ground deformation and summit deflation before lava reached the surface.

● Summit eruption: It is possible that an eruption could occur in the summit region. In this scenario, we would expect to see increased rates of seismicity and ground deformation in the summit region before lava reached the surface.

● Eastward magma migration: New pulses of magma could continue to accumulate below the surface near Makaopuhi Crater and migrate eastward toward and possibly beyond Puʻuʻōʻō. In this scenario, we would expect to see earthquake locations and ground deformation patterns start to occur further east than they are now. This scenario is less likely than the above scenarios based on current activity.

The recent changes indicate that magma is re-pressurizing Kīlauea’s summit storage regions while also refilling a long-lived storage region near Makaopuhi Crater on the MERZ. Recent unrest has been restricted to Kīlauea’s upper and middle East Rift Zone within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park; no unusual activity has been noted east of Puʻuʻōʻō, along Kīlauea’s lower East Rift Zone, or in the Southwest Rift Zone at this time.
