Though this piece was well received when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in the short movie category, I thought its subject matter would make me not like it at all, yet I found the acting to be so genuine, and the ending so exhilarating, it is now my latest "Artwork of the Week." French-Canadian writer and director David Findlay's protagonist -- a mild-mannered business man -- delves into the world of underground wrestling, and manages to live out his very unusual dream to thrilling effect. Or was it all a dream? With a running time of 9 minutes, make sure to set aside an uninterrupted viewing for maximum impact.

What are your thoughts of this artwork -- the acting, the story, etc. -- and did it make as strong impression on you as it did on me? Please post a comment and get discussion going.

Greetings! Though this piece is somewhat disturbing, my latest "Artwork of the Week" is also very imaginative and thought-provoking. Young female artist Anna Mantzaris has created an ethically challenging story about a woman's life-changing event, and its very serious ramifications. The whole piece is stop-motion animation, meaning the artist physically built all of the characters and objects you see, took tens of thousands of photographs of these objects, then uploaded the photos into her computer to be turned into an animation. With a running time of 8 minutes, make sure to set aside an uninterrupted viewing for maximum impact.

What are your thoughts of this artwork, whether about the story or the animations, or anything else? Please post a comment if you like.

Hi, everyone! I'm excited to have found a visually striking, ever-changing piece to offer as my latest "Artwork of the Week." Director Andrew Huang has employed performers, puppeteers and computer artists, plus imaginative designers of hair, make-up and costumes, to create a fantasia of movement and morphing. It starts out innocently enough, but be patient with it, as it changes over to 3 completely different scenarios, each more wildly imaginative than the previous ones. With a running time of 10 minutes, make sure to set aside an uninterrupted viewing for maximum impact.

What are your thoughts of this artwork, whether about the performers or the special effects, or anything else? Please post a comment. Rafael Risemberg

And now for a completely different direction! Music videos I've offered in the past on my Tours of the Digital Arts were usually high-tech or high budget, for maximum "dazzle" factor. But in keeping with this pared-down holiday weekend, my latest "Artwork of the Week" is a heartfelt performance made a couple of months ago during the pandemic by a professional on a shoestring budget, and it feels emotionally touching, yet also haunting. Singer and director Sophia Anne Caruso, who originated one of the roles in the recent Broadway musical "Beetlejuice," uses her soulful voice to transport us with the song "Toys," that speaks to the loneliness and desire for connection that all of us are feeling. And look for the appearance of several toys throughout, to somewhat enigmatic effect. With a running time of 3 minutes, make sure to set aside an uninterrupted viewing for maximum impact.

What are your thoughts of this artwork, whether about the singing or low-tech visuals or anything else? Maybe some of you will find her voice grating, I don't know. Please post a comment if you like.

My latest "Artwork of the Week" is a startling computer-generated animation that has won multiple prizes at digital film festivals around the world. I think it's exceptional in combining 2D animation technology with a weirdly wonderful story. Plus, the color palette is sumptuous! Berlin-based writer/director Cristoph Sarrow worked with 9 other animators to create this surreal, inventive gem. It's about a "sensitive" farm boy whose imagination runs to epic proportions, seeing the world as alternately magical and terrifying. With a running time of 9 minutes, make sure to set aside an uninterrupted viewing for maximum impact.

What are your thoughts of this artwork, whether about the animation or the story or both? Please post a comment, so we get a discussion going, like on my tours. Rafael Risemberg

Rafael Risemberg here. My "Artwork of the Week," the 2020 Academy Award winner for Live Action Short Film, is one of the most emotionally affecting works of art I've experienced in the past year. Titled "The Neighbors' Window," this digital film is a heartwarming and insightful story of apartment dwellers, the diverse families that form the backbone of urban society. Artfully written and directed by Marshall Curry (nominated for 4 previous Oscars and finally winning for this one), the story builds to a cathartic ending that I didn't see coming at all. With a running time of 20 minutes, make sure to set aside an uninterrupted viewing for maximum impact.

What are your thoughts of this artwork, or of the urban experience that the video addresses? And did this artwork move you as much as it did me? Please add a comment.

Rafael's "Artwork of the Week" is a single drawing (below) that you don't need to click on, as it doesn't animate. Look how current it is -- released THIS WEEK and referring to something we're all living through. Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Jack Ohman's latest political cartoon shows Joe Biden striving to ride the weaker-than-expected "blue wave" to make it to land, even as sharks ominously gather. Presenting art of the "now" has always been a central mission of mine, and this piece is as "now" as it gets. I searched dozens of political cartoonists' websites to find the one that I thought addressed this stage of the election most astutely.

Rafael Risemberg here. My first-ever "Artwork Link of the Week" is a fast-moving stop-motion animation by the artist Blu, who created dozens of street paintings in his home city Bologna, Italy, took tens of thousands of photographs as the paintings evolved, and finally used software to convert the photographs to an animated video. It seems a staggering amount of work for a 9-minute work, and the artist's delightfully warped humor is revealed throughout.

Last Saturday, Rafael ended his FIRST-EVER "Tour of the Digital Arts" with the following speech: "My final artwork for the evening is a 4-minute homage to New York City, which I had to end on, because of how this city has been suffering, and so this artwork is the most personally wrenching. New York is my lover, New York is my husband. And now my husband is sick, but no way am I going to leave him. This current crisis is the third major New York City crisis I’ve lived through. In 1981, just a few months after moving here, straight out of college, the first cases of AIDS emerged. I was a newly out 21 year-old gay person, s*xually active as most 21 year-olds are, and suddenly this virus with no cure or treatment was killing many of my friends in their 20s, 30s and 40s. Somehow I stayed HIV-negative. Fast forward to Sept. 11, 2001. After I saw on TV that one tower had fallen, I walked outside to 7th Ave. and saw with my own eyes the second tower fall. I and the city were numb with grief and shock for months. But just three months after Sept. 11 I conceived the idea for gallery tours, and 2 months later I led my first tour, in Chelsea. Now Covid is my third major New York City crisis, and three months after the crisis began, incredibly enough I’m launching my Tour of the Digital Arts. And, you know what? I hope to live long enough to experience my fourth major New York crisis, because I’M NOT GOING ANYWHERE. This artist you’ll see in a few seconds is very famous, though the video is a bit blurry. But I’ve come to love the blurriness, because it brings out the colors so beautifully."
