Puffins sport a distinct and adorable appearance with their brightly colored beaks, striking eye markings, and a characteristic upright posture. During the breeding season, their beaks transform into bright hues of orange, yellow, and blue.

They are excellent fliers, capable of reaching speeds of up to 55 miles per hour (88 kilometers per hour). Their short wings are specially adapted for agile flight underwater, allowing them to dive to depths of up to 200 feet (61 meters).

Why we love Walruses….

1️⃣ Majestic Size: Walruses are among the largest pinnipeds (seals and sea lions), with adult males reaching lengths of up to 12 feet (3.6 meters) and weighing over 1.5 tons. Females tend to be slightly smaller, but still awe-inspiring in their own right.

2️⃣ Iconic Tusks: One of the most distinctive features of walruses is their long, prominent tusks. These elongated canine teeth can grow up to three feet in length! The tusks serve various purposes, including aiding in climbing onto ice floes, defense against predators, and establishing social dominance.

3️⃣ Blubbery Adaptations: Walruses possess a thick layer of blubber that helps insulate them in the cold Arctic waters while also providing buoyancy. This blubber layer also serves as an energy reserve, as walruses may go long periods without eating during their extensive migrations.

4️⃣ Social Creatures: Walruses are highly gregarious animals and often gather in large groups known as haulouts. These haulouts can consist of hundreds or even thousands of individuals! Social interactions within these groups include vocalizations, physical contact, and play, fostering a sense of community among these magnificent creatures.

5️⃣ Feeding Habits: Walruses are excellent divers and skilled hunters. They primarily feed on benthic organisms, such as clams and mollusks, using their sensitive whiskers to detect prey buried in the sediment. With their impressive bulk, they can dive to considerable depths and remain submerged for extended periods.

6️⃣ Vocalizations: When walruses communicate with each other, they produce a variety of sounds, including bell-like calls, grunts, barks, and even low-frequency songs. These vocal exchanges help maintain social bonds and synchronize group activities.

Ah, the sight of a polar bear swimming is truly a remarkable spectacle. These incredible creatures are well adapted to survive and navigate through the water in their Arctic habitats.

Imagine a vast expanse of crystal-clear, icy blue water stretching out before you. Amidst the chilly Arctic environment, a majestic polar bear gracefully enters the water. With its powerful paws and streamlined body, it effortlessly propels itself through the frigid depths.

The polar bear’s sleek white fur glistens as water droplets cascade off its thick coat. Its muscular limbs move in a synchronized rhythm, propelling the bear forward with surprising agility. With each stroke, it glides through the water, embracing its natural instincts as an expert swimmer.

Despite their bulky appearance on land, in the water, polar bears are adept swimmers. They can swim for long distances, covering several miles at a time.
While swimming, these magnificent creatures often use a combination of doggy-paddle and breaststroke-style movements to maintain their momentum and maneuver with ease. Their powerful strokes enable them to navigate through icy channels or search for their preferred prey, such as seals.

As the polar bear moves through the Arctic waters, its keen eyesight, excellent scent detection, and exceptional underwater hearing help it locate its prey beneath the surface. It may even dive beneath the water’s surface, using its powerful hind legs to propel itself deeper to capture seals or other marine life.

The Arctic fox is a remarkable and resilient creature that calls Svalbard home. In this harsh and extreme Arctic environment, the Arctic fox has adapted to survive and thrive.

One of the notable characteristics of the Svalbard Arctic fox is its ability to change its coat color depending on the season. In the winter, its fur transforms into a snow-white coat, allowing it to blend perfectly with the icy surroundings, offering excellent camouflage and protection against predators. As spring arrives and the snow begins to melt, the Arctic fox’s coat changes to a brown or grayish-brown color, matching the rocky landscape and vegetation.

These foxes are superb hunters and scavengers, capable of surviving in a challenging environment where food is sometimes scarce. Their diet consists of small mammals, birds, eggs, fish, and even carrion. During the summer months, Arctic foxes take advantage of the abundance of Arctic seabird colonies, capitalizing on the eggs and chicks to sustain themselves.

Svalbard Arctic foxes are known for their impressive ability to survive in cold temperatures, withstanding frigid Arctic winters. They have adapted with thick fur and a layer of subcutaneous fat, which helps them conserve body heat. They also have furry paws that act as natural snowshoes, allowing them to move effortlessly across the snow-covered terrain.

This expedition introduces a voyage from Tromsø to Alta where we include Lyngen Alps area then head to Alta to the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel for a visit and overnight on New Year’s Eve. What a remarkably special place to ring in the New Year, perhaps together with the Aurora Borealis! Here, our guests will feast their eyes on the Igloo Hotel made entirely out of snow and ice and can sleep within its crystalline walls.
A New Year's 5-course Dinner will be prepared for our guests who will celebrate with delicious cuisine at the Arctic Wilderness Lodge.

Roam through the many decorative sculpture displays themed every year to something uniquely special. Join your shipmates at the impressive bar carved from ice and sip to good health with a Sorrisniva Special—a deep blue shot of liquor served in a cup also carved from ice.

The Norwegian Coastline and fjords have long been one of the most celebrated regions of the world for lofty scenic mountains and charming remote villages. Landscapes recall tales of Vikings, brave explorers and myths of trolls, fairytales, and mysterious auroras that light up the heavens with glowing colors of green,
turquoise, lavender, and pale yellow.

Come aboard our expedition ship, MV Villa, for our Fall expeditions to see the auroras and experience the whales magnetized by the herring runs. Some of our trips in late December through March feature the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, an enchanting palace carved entirely out of ice where you have the option to sleep in this icy abode.
