We’ve just wrapped up our January 2025 half-week relocation tour, and it was a success! It was a pleasure hosting and guiding potential future residents of San Miguel de Allende, giving them a glimpse into what life here could be like. We explored local neighborhoods, toured rentals and properties for sale, and discussed the immigration process. We also provided valuable insights into the culture, health insurance options, and how to respectfully integrate into and navigate local customs.

I Thought It Was Easy!

I’ll admit it—I tried to handle too much on my own at first. Looking back, I realize how much time (and money) I wasted by not asking for help sooner.

When I moved to Mexico, it wasn’t just about changing my location—it was about rebuilding my life. I left behind what no longer served me and embraced a fresh start. But there were some things I wasn’t fully prepared for, like navigating business ownership in Mexico. Let me share some of my experiences and lessons learned to help make your journey smoother.

Filing Monthly Taxes as a Business Owner
One of the first challenges I encountered was Mexico’s tax system. Filing monthly taxes is non-negotiable for business owners, and it’s essential to have a reliable bookkeeper on your side. If your Spanish isn’t advanced, hiring someone bilingual is a must.

Key steps include:
- Opening a Mexican bank account.
- Obtaining an RFC (the equivalent of a U.S. tax ID for your business).
- Securing the necessary permits for your business.
- Ensuring all business income flows through your Mexican account.

I quickly learned that working with a professional who understands these steps is invaluable. It saved me from making costly errors and allowed me to focus on growing my business.

Opening a Local Bank Account
Setting up a bank account was another critical step, and it wasn’t without its quirks. Back in 2018, the process felt a bit archaic, but I stuck with it, and I’m still banking with the same institution today.

What I love most about my bank is the personalized service. In Mexico, it’s common to have in-person assistance and even a dedicated contact for when you’re in a pinch. Bonus: I can deposit U.S. checks directly into my Mexican account—yes, it’s legal! This convenience has made managing finances on both sides of the border seamless.
