Jewelry Ice is the newest scenic attraction of Hokkaido. It is located on the shoal of Tokachigawa River on the east side of Otsu City. Every year in the winter from January to March, when the temperature drops to minus 20 degrees, gigantic ice cubes form up. When it becomes warmer, ice cubes start to float back to the coast. These ice cubes can be as big as 1m in diameter. When the sun shines on them, iridescent glows radiate from within. This beautiful scene was captured by a renown Japanese photographer and gave it the current name. Since then, the fame of Jewlry ice has been spreaded out.

Nokogiri-Yama Mountain in Chiba Prefecture is at an elevation of 330m. The famous Overlook of Hell is located on top of a rock protruding out from the steep cliff, with fences built around. From this overlook you can take in the whole clear view of Tokyo Bay in 360 degrees. There’s another overlook on top of Nokogiri-Yama Mountain along with other attractions such as the tallest Buddha of Japan ( 31m ) and Hundred-Meter Guanyin.

How to Get Here? Walk from Omotesando (From Yasuda Station) or take gondola from Hama-Kanaya Station, the admission for round trip is 930 yen.

Wakakusa Hill in Nara is famous for its mountain burning ritual. The hill is adjacent to the world heritage Todaji Temple and Kasuga Shrine. The mountain burning ritual is held each year in the fourth Saturday of January, in order to welcome the coming of the spring. In the springtime, Wakakusa Hill is also one of the best spots to enjoy sakura!

Nara Inn (Relay) is located in Shiojiri City of Nagano Prefecture. The 11 km long relay maintains the architectural features of Edo Era. It is the longest relay in Japan, and is a preservation district of Japan traditional architecture. In the past, the Nara Inn was the most prosperous places among the 11 relays of Kiso and was named Nara Sen Hin. The signature local cuisines are mountain vegetables dishes, Shinshu Soba noodles, grilled river fish and rice cake (Mochi) in Magnolia leaf. Ice Candle Festival is also a renown local attraction.

One of the World’s Heritages, the Blue Pond of the Twelve Lakes is located amidst Shirakami Moutain Area (White God Mountain) of Aomori Prefecture. The lake water alters its colors during the day. It is crystal clear blue before noon, but turns into dark and elegant navy blue in the afternoon. What causes the change of colors is still unknown, yet it has added more mystery to this place. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to worship the Blue Pond each year. It is suffice to say that the Blue Pond is the most famous tourist spot in the White God Mountain Area.

Motonosumi-Inari Shrine at Yamaguchi Prefecture is one of the only two Inari Shrines in Japan. Legend has it that it was built on the demand of the Fox Spirit, thus Inari God is the major Shinto deity worshipped here. After the construction was done, the shrine gathered the beliefs of pilgrims from different areas, and built 123 scarlet toriis that line up from the seaside up to the mountain top. The magnificent view of broken ridges and steep cliffs was elected as the top 31 beautiful scenes by CNN Japan. The donation box is fixed on the final torii, which is known as the hardest ones to aim at in Japan.

Hokuryū, Hokkaido has the biggest sun flower field in Japan. The surface area of the field is equal to 5 Tokyo Domes, with 30 different kinds, 1.5 millions of sun flowers in total. In the summer, from the middle of July to the end of August, Sun Flower Festival is held. Gigantic Sun flower labyrinths and magnificent fireworks are both very popular. The beautiful scene of golden floral waves wavering in summer breezes attracts more than twenty thousand tourists each year.

The End of the Coast of Okinawa is praised as the top beauty of the Eastern World. It is located 5 km away from the east side of Kume Island.

Kanazawa’s most well-known stroll garden Kenrokuen is one of the top three famous gardens in Japan. It is located next to Kanazawa Castle. It has taken 180 years to complete the construction of the stroll garden. Kenrokuen has earned its name for having all six major traits a highly-developed garden should possess, that are: grand, tranquil and deep, manual labor, ancient, water fountain and an overlooking spot. There are more than 5000 plants, small bridges, waterfalls and stone lanterns in the garden. The Atsuta Shrine at Nagoya is one of the three major shrines in Japan. It is said that the shrine was built in the third century to worship one of the top three Japanese divine artifacts, Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi ( Sword of the Gathering Clouds of Heaven), the sword of Kusanagi that was used in Japanese construction.
In the shrine, Atsuta-Jingu Treasure House attracts most visitors. Inside the house, there are more than 2000 pieces of antiques, artworks and ancient documents.

Once known as Northern Wall Street, Otaru Canal was the ecnomic center of Hokkaido. The Canal is now a landmark of Otaru and major tourist attraction. In the night, when the kerosene streetlights are ignited like stars in the sky, the canal suddenly becomes a romantic milky way. Cruising down the river on the boat, one can enjoy the red brick warehouses lining along the riverbank. The Canal extends for about one kilometer by length. It seems to narrate a glorious story that has lasted for 70 years.

Nikko Toshogu Shrine in Itabashi County worships Tōshō Daigongen, the deified Tokugawa Ieyasu. The building underwent a complete renewal in 1634. The re-construction gathered the top professionals and artisans in paint, sculpture and architecture of that time. Blending the cultural traits of Momoyama and Edo Period, they, together, created a building that is grand and magnificent, and has ever since become the culminaiton of shrines in that era. To this day, Toshogu keeps eight National Treasures and 34 important historic monuments, and is considered as the number one attraction in Nikko.

Let’s go see snow in the spring!

The Tateyama Mountains in Toyama Prefecture is known as the Japanese Alps. In the winter, the mountains are closed for thick layers of snow. The roads are not opened until the spring. This year, Teteyama is accessible from 4/16 to the end of November. Travelers can take gondola and buses to commence the 89km’s Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Get off at Murodo Station, one can walk among and touch the snow walls, which can be 15-18 meters above the ground.

Monet’s Water Lilies Pond at Seki City of Gifu Prefecture is located next to Nemichi Shrine. It was called “The Pond with No Name.” It is a 400-square-meter pond of iridescent water, which changes hues when the sun shines from different directions. Miyazaki Prefecture’s Takachiho Gorge is famous for its manifold column-shaped rocks. Various A*o Volcano’s eruptions have produced large amount of lava. It flowed down to the river, later was cooled and hardened by river water, and eventually formed numerous huge rocks. Takachiho Gorge is now a magnificent valley of 7kms long and 80ms tall. It is also called The Rock Screen of the Fairies. The Gorge in green leaves (summer) and maples leaves (autumn) offers gorgeous sights. There is also night view of Manai Falls that is highly eye-catching! Boating tour of the gorge is recommended!

The Hitsujiyama Park in Chichibu City of Saitama Prefecture is well-known for its Shibazakura Hill. The inclined plane of the Hitsujiyama Hill is used to grow four hundred thousands moss phlox of 9 different kinds and of various colors, red, purple and white etc. The floral area takes up 17600 square meters. Every year in the middle of April to the beginning of May, when the flowers blossom, the hill seems to be covered by pink carpets. The Shibazakura Hill is a highly popular attraction among Tokyo suburbs. The ranch here keeps sheep too. So we can see sheep herds on the hill as they stroll on the pasture !
