JAFFNA FORT
The majestic stronghold of our colonial north
One of Sri Lanka's few well-preserved colonial ramparts, the Jaffna Fort was initially constructed by the Portuguese in the 17th century. The Jaffna Fort, sprawled across the southern edge of the northern capital, owes much of its magnificence to the Dutch, who took it from the Portuguese and eventually developed it into the iconic structure we know today. The Jaffna Fort served as a bastion for the British after the Dutch left and up until Sri Lanka's independence in 1948. The Jaffna Fort, with its vast grounds and century-old walls that may be scaled upon as you take in the views of Jaffna all around you, is a well-liked destination for all tourists visiting the city today.
