#9 - Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Michigan's Isle Royale National Park is one of the least visited national parks, and the most revisited. Formed by the world’s largest lava flow and sculpted by glaciers for millennia, the island rises from the depths of Lake Superior and is accessible only by sea vessel or by float plane.

It is remote and it is wild; two factors that make a visit here a challenge, one that visitors are thrilled to take on. Price is another deterrent—equipping a remote island with supplies for visitors comes at a turn-key cost. And then there is the forbidding northern climate. It is virtually impossible to travel there during the winter months, and as a result, Isle Royale is the only national park in the system that is closed entirely during the winter season.

When it opens each year in May after seven months operating solely under the guidance of Mother Nature, the island comes to life. Moose come out to feed on aquatic grasses, Loons sound their magnificent calls, wildflowers and berries color the baseline of the hardwood conifer forests.

Adventure enthusiasts keen to kayak the rocky coastline, portage inland lakes and streams, and hike and camp throughout undeveloped wilderness arrive and quickly disappear into the rugged ridges and shorelines.

#8 - Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

Steaming sulphur vents, splattering mud pots, boiling springs—these feisty hydrothermal features prove that the earth is not sleeping in this national park near Redding.

Lassen Volcanic National Park’s signature volcano, Lassen Peak, blew its top in May 1914 and its outbursts continued for three years. Now it’s dormant, and trails and overlooks give you access to see and learn about volcanic activity amid a tranquil landscape of dense woods and sparkling lakes.

Marvel at bubbling, boiling hydrothermal features at Sulphur Works or Bumpass Hell. Climb a cinder cone and photograph a swirling landscape of orange and gray pumice fields. Hike to Lassen Peak’s summit and look down into its volcanic crater. Swim or kayak in spring-fed lakes. Drive the mountain-climbing curlicues of Lassen National Park Highway (Highway 89) and stop to admire Lake Helen’s icy turquoise waters.

Set up your tent under shady red firs at one of eight park campgrounds. Ride horses, soak in the hot springs pool, stroll through wildflower-filled meadows to easy-to-reach waterfalls. And in winter, snowshoe or ski around the park’s frosty, white-blanketed wonderland.

#7 - Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

Located in south-central Utah in the heart of red rock country, Capitol Reef National Park is a hidden treasure filled with cliffs, canyons, domes, and bridges in the Waterpocket Fold, a geologic monocline (a wrinkle on the earth) extending almost 100 miles.

The park surrounds a long wrinkle in the earth known as the Waterpocket Fold, with layers of golden sandstone, canyons and striking rock formations. Among the park's sights are the Chimney Rock pillar, the Hickman Bridge arch, and Capitol Reef, known for its white sandstone domes. In the north are the towering monoliths of Cathedral Valley.

#6 - North Cascades National Park, Washington

Often overshadowed by Olympic and Mount Rainier national parks, North Cascades is Washington state's hidden gem. You'll find lush forests of evergreen trees; alpine lakes; meadows blossoming with colorful flowers; lots of waterfalls, like the most visited Ladder Creek Falls; and hundreds of miles of hiking trails.

Less than three hours from Seattle, an alpine landscape beckons. Discover communities of life adapted to moisture in the west and recurring fire in the east. Explore jagged peaks crowned by more than 300 glaciers. Listen to cascading waters in forested valleys. Witness a landscape sensitive to the Earth's changing climate.

#5 - Katmai National Park, Alaska

Can you remember a wildlife documentary you watched, perhaps as a kid, in which big brown bears fish for salmon in a waterfall? Almost certainly, that footage was shot in Alaska’s Katmai National Park, arguably the world’s best place for bear watching.

It is, however, not the easiest or cheapest place to get to. No roads lead into the park, so you have to fly into a nearby town, where you would then charter a floatplane to drop you off in the park.

In addition to watching brown bears at Brooks Falls—they’re among the largest in the world thanks to abundant salmon—, Katmai also offers superb kayaking and canoeing, wilderness camping and hiking, and fishing so don’t forget your Sonik fishing gear.

Other highlights are immersing yourself in millennia-old Native American culture and visiting the mystically named Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. This moon-like landscape was created after Novarupta’s eruption in 1912 and when a lava stream solified.

Note that the park has merely 5 miles (8 kilometers) of hiking trails, but you’re free to explore as you please. Make sure to know what you’re doing, though. This is one of the wildest and remotest regions on earth.

11 Under-the-Radar National Parks in the US

#4 - Crater Lake National Park - Oregon

Created after a prehistoric volcano erupted and collapsed 7,700 years ago, Crater Lake is more than five miles (8 kilometers) in diameter and 1,943 feet (592 meters) deep, making it deepest lake in the United States.

When the annual spring thaw arrives, a thick blanket of snow melts, trickling as far as 2,000 feet (3,219 meters) down into the piercing cobalt lake. Crater Lake National Park becomes a flurry of activity each summer, with daily boat tours of the lake (reservations are strongly suggested and visitors should be prepared for an arduous hike on Cleetwood Trail to the boat launch).

Back on land, cyclists can spin their wheels around the rigorous 33-mile (53-kilometer) Rim Drive and hikers give their soles a run for their money on the 90 miles (145 kilometers) of trails.

Those not looking burn calories while sightseeing can hop on a ranger-led trolley tour, which circles the caldera rim seasonally (July to mid-October, weather permitting).

When to go: Late spring and summer are the most ideal times; the park has seen measurable snowfall as early as September.

#3 - Dry Tortugas National Park - Florida

When Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon discovered these pristine islets approximately 70 miles (113 kilometers) west off Key West in 1513, he christened them Las Tortugas, which translates to “The Turtles,” because of the region’s plethora of green, loggerhead, hawksbill, Kemp's ridley, and leatherback turtles.

Fast-forward to today: The region is a scuba diver’s playground with shallow, cerulean waters, hundreds of shipwrecks, and nearly 30 varieties of coral swarming with underwater favorites like gray angelfish, red grouper, stoplight, and parrotfish.

There are daily boat tours to Dry Tortugas National Park from Key West that typically include a visit to the unfinished Fort Jefferson and a few hours for swimming and snorkeling. There’s also a 10-site bare-bones campground, but beware, campers must bring all supplies, including water and food, and all trash must be brought back to the mainland.

When to go: November through April is the region’s dry season and temperatures are comfortable, hovering in the low to mid-70s.

11 Under-the-Radar National Parks in the US

#2 - Big Bend National Park - Texas

Straddling the Mexico–United States border and crammed with some 500 million years of history, this remote area in the Lonestar State’s Chihuahuan Desert is one of a kind.

Big Bend National Park, which gets its moniker from the dramatic change in direction of the Rio Grand River, is an open-air museum: The National Park Service estimates that there are nearly 26,000 archaeological sites spread throughout the park, and some date as far back as 10,000 years.

There are 200 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy to strenuous, and two of the best to tackle are Santa Elena Canyon and Lost Mine. At 4.8 miles (7.7 kilometers) round-trip, the Lost Mine Trail weaves through the Chisos Mountains and offers incredible views of Juniper Canyon and Casa Grande.

For something a little shorter, try the Santa Elena Canyon Trail. The hike descends to the Rio Grande’s edge, where the limestone canyon walls soar 1,500 feet (457 meters) above the river.

Come nightfall, amateur astronomers gaze up at the natural planetarium with their naked eyes as 2,000 stars twinkle in the sky on the clearest of evenings.

When to go: November through April before the sweltering summer heat arrives.

11 Under-the-Radar National Parks in the US

#1 - Lake Clark National Park and Preserve - Alaska

With its sky-high Chigmit Mountain peaks, two active volcanoes, alpine tundra, and turquoise lakes brimming with salmon and so smooth they double as mirrors, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve really is the Last Frontier.

The park is only accessible by small aircraft or boat, so this area remains unblemished, and it offers magnificent wildlife sightings of brown and black bears, moose, caribou, and Dall sheep.

The 4,030,005-acre national park also allows catch-and-release fishing, with species of salmon—including chum, king, coho, pink, and sockeye—spawning in all main rivers between the months of June and September.

Other outdoor adventure includes rafting (don’t expect white-water rapids, though), kayaking, and hiking through the Tanalian Trails network.

When to go: Summer, when the average highs fluctuate between 50 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit (10 and 18 degrees Celsius).

LABADEE, HAITI

There’s nowhere quite like Labadee— where you can chase an adrenaline rush on an alpine coaster one minute, and do some sun soaking the next.

All right in the middle of rolling jungles and sparkling beaches. Cruise to Labadee and trek to the mountaintop to catch serious air on the world's longest zip line over water— the Dragon's Breath Flight LineSM.

Or climb the only icebergs in the Caribbean at Arawak Aqua Park. If you just want to kick back and relax, grab our signature drink— the Labadoozie— and your own beach bungalow overlooking Nellie’s Beach. Or take a boat ride off Haiti’s shore for Caribbean hues and ocean views.

PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Punta Cana is one of the top beach destinations in the Caribbean— and for good reason. It’s a tropical hot spot where the Dominican sun shines and tranquil waters lap sugary sands fringed by shady coconut palms.

During your Punta Cana cruise, all out adventure lies just beyond the shore. The warm, shallow waters off Playa Bavaro are perfect for snorkeling with stingrays, and you can explore sunken shipwrecks like The Astron.

Fish for trophy-size catches on a marlin charter. Or ride horse-back along the shore of Uvero Alto. There are endless ways to explore, from treetop ziplining in La Hacienda Park to spelunking in underground caves like La Cueva de Rulfo.

FALMOUTH, JAMAICA

Nestled right between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, Falmouth is the perfect backdrop for discovery in Jamaica during your cruise— but there’s lots to do right there.

For a relaxing ride along the shoreline, hop on horseback in Chukkah Beach. Cruise to Falmouth and head to the Water Square and jam out with the locals to live reggae.

Culture cravers can get their fix during high tea at the historical Good Hope Estate overlooking the Queen of Spain Valley. And a trip to Falmouth wouldn’t be complete without chowing down on fiery jerk chicken and rum cake, two local favorites.

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA

If variety is the spice of life, then Grenada is the taste of the tropics. The intoxicating aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves fill the air wherever you go.

Take your pick of 45 sun-kissed beaches to lounge on, or hit the jungle-covered mountain range for more rugged adventures. Stroll through the 125-year-old Sendall Tunnel to reach the Carenage waterfront promenade.

Cruise to Grenada and grab a seat at an open-air café and admire the steep streets lined with colonial buildings and colorful 18th-century warehouses. And holding true to its nickname of Spice Island, you’ll find several spice plantations and estates here too.

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO

Cruises from San Juan are always special because they begin in a city that doubles as a top vacation destination.

The vibrant capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan offers something for every traveler — world-famous beaches with crystal clear waters, incredible cuisine, rugged natural beauty and a rich history that goes back 500 years.

With its ancient fortresses and colorful colonial-era buildings, San Juan makes it easy to feel as though you’ve slipped into the past. Life moves at a slower pace along the sunny cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, and salsa beats seem to waft perpetually from open windows.

If you’re craving a hike, head to El Yunque National Forest. And if you’re more in the mood to unwind, set your sights on the beautiful shores of Isla Verde or El Condado.

Mealtime is also an adventure, with so many delicious options to try — from mofongo and pastelon to chillo frito and alcapurrias. Pair every bite with a piña colada — Puerto Rico’s national drink.
