🇩🇪⛴️Sailing through the Rhine Gorge is a highlight on a Rhine river cruise. For over a 1,000 years the steep valley sides have been terraced for vineyards. The landscape is punctuated by some 40 hill top castles and fortresses erected over a period of around 1,000 years. Abandonment and later the wars of the 17th century left most as picturesque ruins.

Day 2 after lunch on the ship, I took a wander into the old town of Speyer.

Speyer Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe. It was the burial place of German emperors for almost 300 years.

Another Christmas market, and lots of beautiful decorations.

Day 2 of our river cruise took us to Germany where we docked in Speyer, historically known in English as Spires, it is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate in the western part of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Our morning was spent on one of the optional excursions to Heidelberg. Our first stop was to the castle. The castle ruins are among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps with amazing views over the Neckar Valley and river.

From the castle we went down into the town to visit the Christmas market, less crowded than the market in Strasbourg, with a stunning backdrop of Heidelberg Castle.

They have a small ice skating rink and plenty of food stalls as well as local Christmas crafts.

We enjoyed a leisurely walk around the market and town before finishing up with a Baileys coffee to warm us up 😋☕️

Today we spent the day in Strasbourg at the largest Christmas market in France.

Strasbourg is the European capital and the capital of Alsace.

Strasbourg cathedral is an outstanding masterpiece of Gothic art. The construction of the Romanesque cathedral, of which only the crypt and the footprint remain, began in 1015. The spire of the current building, in a Gothic style, was completed in 1439.

A city of two worlds: Strasbourg is a unique blend of French and German cultures, as the city has been passed back and forth between the two countries several times throughout history. This cultural fusion is reflected in the city’s architecture, cuisine, and even its dialect, Alsatian, which combines elements of both French and German.

A city of culinary delights: Strasbourg is a food lover’s paradise, with a rich culinary tradition that features dishes like tarte flambée, choucroute, and baeckeoffe. The city is also home to several Michelin-starred restaurants, offering some of the best dining experiences in France.

My home for the next 4 nights as I embark on a 4 night Christmas market river cruise on board the beautiful Amadeus Riva.
We will be over nighting here in Strasbourg and spending the day tomorrow exploring the European Capital and the largest Christmas market in France, we will then sail up the Rhine, visiting Rüdesheim, Speyer and Koblenz before disembarking in Cologne.
