A great evening exploring our new beat which has over 3 miles of fishing in beautiful surroundings, with the chance of catching salmon, sea trout and some big brownies. The beat has huge potential and it was great to have landed a fresh grilse from it last night.

A fantastic few days helping on the Beauly. Great to meet some lovely people and to see them get some good sport with grilse and big summer salmon.
A lovely few days spent with Julie and Vanessa from Cambridge. Vanessa lost a salmon after a good few runs which was a real shame, however- both ladies progressed very well with their casting and river craft and had a great time.

It’s been a pleasure to look after Sue and Vanessa this week, both ladies have picked up spey casting very well, pictured here is Sue, who at 79 years young, tried spey casting / salmon fishing for the first time. Sue was rewarded with this beautiful spring salmon from the Mill pool on the Carlogie beat. The fish was caught on a classic setup, a full floating spey line, tapered leader and a silver stoat fly. What a special moment for all involved.

After a busy few years as Nicol Paton Fly Fishing, from today we will be known as The Scottish Fly Fishing Co. However it’s more than just a name change, our business is evolving too.
Our existing fishing offering has expanded to include more beats on the rivers Dee, Don and Findhorn and we now have more capacity for guided fishing trips to these, and other beats across Scotland. We will continue to offer lessons to new and experienced anglers as normal.

Today was a day for doing a recce on the absolutely stunning Cambus 0’ May beat on the River Dee, prior to running my spring fishing clinic in a couple of weeks time. I hooked what turned out to be a cracking looking springer in the beats Mill Pool. After a dogged fight, Cambus Ghillie, arrived with the net and just as the fish was beginning to tire, it slapped its tail and threw the hook. Arghhh! 😩 that’s salmon fishing for you! Craig and I thought it would’ve been in the mid teens. On the bright side, there appears to be a few fish in this area which bodes well for the clinic. We have 2 spaces left. It's that time of year again where we are getting ready for our 2024 Spring Salmon Fishing Clinic at the beautiful Cambus O' May beat on the upper River Dee.
Our three days last year were a big success with what turned out to be the biggest fish of the season caught on the Dee, a 99cm spring salmon (pictured below) another cracker for our guest Gordon was caught and landed by beat Ghillie Craig McDonald and another fish was lost.
The Cambus O' May beat is very private with a stunning backdrop of the Cairngorm Mountains, it's just shy of 3 miles double bank with 21 pools which fish in a variety of heights. The beat is fully booked for the 2024 season, so we are lucky to have a week here.

I was delighted, alongside Cambus O’ May Ghillie, to receive the best fish of the 2023 fishing season on the river Dee, on behalf of my guest, Ken. Ken had booked on to my spring salmon fishing clinic and managed to hook and play a magnificent 22lb spring salmon at the stunning Glashan pool on the Cambus O’ May beat. There was teamwork with Craig giving a thorough description of the pool and myself being there to watch the battle and land the fish. Acrobatics from an Icelandic 18lb salmon. Caroline did very well playing this fish on her Cadence 14’6 rod, during .speyonline’s hosted trip to the Blanda.
It was a pleasure to host Courtney and her family from North Carolina, USA. They all picked up the double spey cast quickly and were unlucky not to have hooked a fish, we saw a good run of fish going through.
Here’s a few highlights from my recent trip to the River Blanda in Iceland. One of the main highlights was helping Caroline, pictured below, hook and land this 18lb salmon, which was her first ever fly caught salmon. There’s some great footage to follow that highlights teamwork between Ian, Steini the guide and myself making the whole thing happen. It was an amazing experience that I would wholeheartedly recommend to any salmon fly fisher that has never been before. A huge thank you to .speyonline who made everything possible for me and a big thank you to Erik and his team.

It’s been a lovely few days guiding for Jeremy and Mel on the River Beauly, both are new to the sport and picked up the art of spey casting well, they can’t wait to come back next year!. A big thank you to & for their great hospitality in looking after me, Gordon and his team of ghillies are first class and it was nice to see such a professional set up again.
Nothing like a day on the river with your dog. thanks to Gordon and Colin for a great day! A bit bright for fishing but great to be out.
It was a great pleasure to take my nephew, Rafferty out for his first ever fishing experience today. It brought back a lot of memories to when I first started fishing, watching the excitement on Raff’s face when the bubble float submerged was great! He took to it like a duck to water and caught 4 fish! Here’s hoping that’s the start to Raff’s love for fishing. A big thank you to Doris and David Gill who run Tulloch trout fishery, they were extremely helpful.
It was a real pleasure to have Ian Gordon Salmon Fishing on the beat today, Ian and Somers Fishing Tackle donated a day of casting tuition and fishing for the auction on the Tilbouries Fishing beat on the Dee, the two guests, Gerry and Lloyd improved greatly throughout the day and both left very happy with their progress. For me personally as a fishing guide and ghillie, it was great to learn from someone of Ian’s calibre. I’ve always said, a good instructor should be able to put information across simply. To see how quickly the guys picked up various casting techniques was impressive.
Today was a really special day, I was absolutely delighted for my guest Ken to land his personal best salmon, during my spring salmon fishing clinic at the beautiful Cambus O’ May beat on the River Dee. The fish took a Dee Monkey tube fly in the Glashan pool, this fish fought extremely hard and made some strong long runs, eventually I netted it, we kept the fish in the water and measured it at 99cm. Thank you to the Cambus Ghillie, Craig McDonald and to local photographer, Chris Bell.

Gus, searching for silver during one of our spring salmon fishing clinics, it’s been great to see our clients progressing so much over the past few days, whilst enjoying the whole experience of being out on the beautiful .
I’ve just returned from a super 3 days on the beat on the River Tay, I was lucky to hook and land a 15lb spring fish in the last hour, not long after Stuart Lang had a stunning sea liced fish.
