Pumpkin and beets c.1899-1900
By Louis Comfort Tiffany
Leaded favrile stained glass
in Winter Park, Florida
This piece is amazing! The colours are so vibrant!
Louis Comfort Tiffany was originally trained as a painter before pursuing the art of glassmaking in the late nineteenth century. He is linked with the Art Nouveau movement which embodies floral motifs with flowing and stylized curves. Tiffany preferred to work with glass that contained mineral impurities and often composed his decorative arts with a variety of colours and textures of opalescent glass. The natural jewel-like hues of pumpkin and beetroot are a fitting subject for an art work focused on saturated colour and light. Tiffany’s painterly background is evident with tonal variation used to denote the shape and the form of the organic shapes of the vegetables and the foliage.

Fogo Island

The itsy-bitsy spider climbed up the sarracenia's spout.⁣

Down came the rain and washed the spider out.⁣

Out came the sun and dried up all the rain.⁣

But unfortunately it didn't matter much to the spider because the plant had already eaten them 😰.⁣

The pitcher plant is the provincial flower of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada as chosen by Queen Victoria over a century ago.⁣

Found primarily in boggy areas of the province, the lower "pitcher" portion of the plant fills with water, trapping and drowning unsuspecting prey.⁣

This ability to digest flies, ants and spiders means that it is classified as a "carnivorous plant". However this is not the only humanistic ability of the plant If you stand absolutely still, and if the wind blows just right you can hear the plants talk amongst themselves with a softest whisper.⁣

Hark, what's the noise out by the porch door?
Granny, 'tis Mummers, there's twenty or more.
Her old weathered face brightens up with a grin,
Any Mummers, nice Mummers 'lowed in?

Come in, lovely Mummers, don't bother the snow,
We can wipe up the water sure after you go;
Sit if you can or on some Mummer's knee,
Let's see if we know who ya be.

There's big ones 'n' small ones 'n' tall ones 'n' thin,
Boys dressed as women and girls dressed as men;
Humps on their backs an' mitts on their feet,
My blessed, we'll die with the heat.

There's only one there that I think that I know,
That tall feller standing
o'er long side the stove;
He's shakin' his fist for to make me not tell,
Must be W***y from out on the hill.

Now that one's a stranger if there ever was one,
With his underwear stuffed
and his trap door undone;
Is he wearin' his mother's big forty-two bra?
I knows but I'm not gonna say.

Don't s'pose you fine Mummers
would turn down a drop,
No home brew or alchy, whatever you got;
Not the one with his rubber boots on the wrong feet,
He's enough for to do him a week.

S'pose you can dance? Yes, they all nod their heads,
They've been tappin' their feet
ever since they came in;
Now that the drinks have been all passed around,
The Mummers are plankin' her down.

Be careful the lamp and hold onto the stove,
Don't swing Granny hard 'cause
you know that she's old;
No need for to care how you buckles the floor,
'Cause Mummers have danced here before.

My God, how hot is it, we better go,
I 'low we'll all get the devil's own cold;
Good night and good Christmas,
Mummers, me dears,
Please God, we will see you next year.

Good night and good Christmas,
Mummers, me dears,
Please God, we will see you next year.

Do you know why Moraine Lake is often referred to as “the lake with a twenty-dollar view”? This scenic glacier-fed lake located near Lake Louise earned this moniker after appearing on the back of the Canadian twenty-dollar bill between 1969 to 1979. | |⠀

One of the 24 communities that the trail passes through is Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove 😃 Here are a few fun facts:

1) In 2004, the harbour was deepened to allow keeled vessels.

2) In 1910, there were 38 ponies and 282 dogs. Dogs helped haul goods and supplies such as bread, cookies, and wood, even to and from St. John's.

3) The "Independence Hurricane" on Sept. 12, 1775 was the first recorded "big sea" to wash into Petty Harbour with 6-to-10-metre-high surges, causing widespread destruction

4) In the 1920s, John and Maggie Bidgood ran a small shop where the War Memorial stands today. In 1963, Bidgood's Supermarket opened in the Goulds.

5) In 1708, John Chafe of Devon, England moved into Petty Harbour. By 1894, 47 of the 96 families in Petty Harbour were Chafes. If you meet a Chafe, chances are they/their ancestors are from Petty Harbour.

A fishing stage is a wooden vernacular building, typical of the rough traditional buildings associated with the cod fishery in Newfoundland, Canada. Stages are located at the water's edge or "landwash", and consist of an elevated platform on the shore with working tables and sheds at which fish are landed and processed for salting and drying. Traditionally, they are painted with a red ochrepaint, though colours other than red are sometimes seen.

The tiny community of Elliston, the Root Cellar Capital of the World. These traditional food storage systems – used mainly for root vegetables like potatoes and carrots – are built right into the ground, mainly into small hills and banks. The natural humidity and moisture keeps things cool in the summer and prevents freezing in the winter.
Elliston has more than 130 documented root cellars in the small town and surrounding area. Of those, half are still in working condition and used today.

a unique cafe with large charm!
The site of the café is the Historic Barter Shop. Built in the 1920’s, it was where local fishermen exchanged fish for credit notes – which was used to get food and supplies for the winter. No money exchanged hands. It is now a Provincial Historic Site.
Great food with an ocean view! Situated in historic Bonavista, Newfoundland, Bonavista Bicycle Picnics & Café offers an ocean front café, bicycle rentals, a packed picnic basket and map with suggested cycling routes.
