PEI tourist road-map from the rebranding period of Malpeque Oysters in the 1950’s.

Thats what a true Malpeque oyster looks like; you won’t find too many that look like that anymore.

Interesting too, are the many oyster farms labelled on this map.

The Shucker’s Tour 2024, sponsored by Canada’s Food Island , with support from the PEI International Shellfish Festival, was a huge hit. We took the visiting shuckers to visit two oyster operations to see first-hand how tonging is done, with an explanation of the wild oyster fishery, and then we were off to see how a modern seed farm works.
Special thanks to The Social Shell PEI, PEI Tasting Tours, and bogside Bogside Brewing, for contributing to our tour.
Huge thanks to John Gillis at Pinette River Oyster Co. and Jesse Fortune of Bill & Stanley / Fortune Oysters for taking time to show us around.

Dr.Joseph Stafford is Canada’s first Oyster-Hero. He began his study of Canadian oysters on PEI, before moving on to study Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, (all of these oysters are Ostrea-Virginia btw), and then he was off to British Columbia to study the native Olympia oyster (Ostrea Lurida)- and is credited with being the first person to bring Virginica oysters from Malpeque Bay to Vancouver Island - where he made wondrous observations.

Springtime is really my favourite time for oysters… after the sun gets high enough into the sky, for longer periods of the day, phytoplankton and micro-algae will begin to bloom. When the oysters detect enough phyto to make it worth the work to feed, they’ll start pumping like mad - and will have the most lovely pollenesqeue’ flavour you’ll only be able to experience during the next few weeks.
Stay tuned for my upcoming video where I will elaborate further.

In 1825 the first regulations were enacted to protect PEI’s oyster beds, and in 1864 the first act providing for a closed season was passed by the province. 1868 saw the first legislation for the granting of licenses and leases…. Although enforcement of these acts would have been difficult - to say the least.

“Meroir” - from the French words “mer, terre and oir” - Follow the link for an explanation of the proper etymology of “Meroir”.
The terms “geomorphology, macro-climate, and microclimate” all change the overall scope and usefulness of the word “meroir”

It’s not so much that oysters grow in PEI’s “meroir”, rather, the “meroir” is the resulting flavour of PEI’s geomorphology on the organism. This changes when comparing the provincial/regional level (macro-climate), a specific site or farm (meso-climate), or a unique environment around an individual bed (microclimate).
