In the late 90s, the Santa Cruz harbor decided to put the dredge pipe in the water at little jetty, in doing so, they put sand where it had never been before. I remember watching the sand mound form, wondering what will happen when the first swell hit.
Well, when that first swell came, it turned into a phenomenon. Every year after that, they moved the pipe in a different spot, creating fun waves but nothing like that first year.
The older I get, I realize how much my surfing life has revolved around the movement of sand. There are so many reasons why sandbar waves are my favorite, but maybe more than anything, it’s the fact that it’s yet another variable that has aligned so beautifully to make perfect waves. When it happens, it makes it much more special. and I missing a good one. Pic

Every dog has its day. Sand moves, reefs stay dormant for years but some strange swell comes and the surf lights up. Those are my most memorable surfs.

Happy to say the Mexican government has given us the ok to open August 1st. The camp will not be filled to capacity and every group of two or more will have their own driver. We look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones at the resort this season.

It’s amazing how just the right angle swell will make places light up that never break.
