WHAT HAS REPLACED THE EHIC CARD?
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) has been replaced by the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which gets you free or reduced-cost state-provided healthcare in the European Union (EU), as well as a few other countries.
If you already have an EHIC, itโs valid until it expires. A GHIC replaces your EHIC when it runs out. You can apply for a GHIC through the NHS
The GHIC gets you free or reduced-rate medical care while in the EU and several other countries.
Each person travelling will need their own card, including children.
A GHIC or EHIC is no substitute for travel insurance which gives you far more protection
While both the EHIC and the GHIC cover you within the EU, the list of other countries they include is slightly different.
The EHIC covers you in Switzerland, Montenegro, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
The newer GHIC also covers you in Switzerland and Montenegro, but it isnโt valid in Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. You can use your UK passport instead to get essential medical treatment in Norway.
The GHIC also covers Australia, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and St Helena, Tristan and Ascension.

Before you get too deep into your research, quickly look up travel requirements to make sure you can meet them.
Make a list of must-haves when it comes to accommodations. Some places will and wonโt fit your requirements, so this is a great way to narrow down your choices.
