23/02/2021

Today we celebrate the Day of the Defender of Fatherland in Russia. It is a day when we usually celebrate our men: fathers, husbands, sons, grandfathers and so on! Somehow we always associate this celebration with men only, but there are so many women who defend our state as well!

The history of this celebration dates back to 1922 when the 4th anniversary of the creation of the Red Army was commemorated. So, originally, 23rd of February is the day when the Red Army was started. With the time flying by the purpose of the celebration changed over and over again and now it is dedicated to all people who are somehow connected to the defence of the state: men and military women.

Official research shows that 61 % of men in Russia served in the army which makes them defenders automatically.

❓Why do we congratulate all men?
⭐️ Because there is no need to serve in the army to be a defender. Our heroes and defenders are on the streets: a father who protects his family, a husband who protects his wife, a son who is still to young but already is eager to protect his mum. Isn’t it enough to be called “a defender”?

Nowadays this day is celebrated in 5 countries:
🇷🇺 Russia
🇧🇾 Belarus
🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan
🇹🇲 Turkmenistan
🇹🇯 Tajikistan

In Russia and in Belarus this day is a federal holiday and is a day off!

Typical gifts for our defenders I will show in stories😀
I would like to congratulate all men and military women with this day! Be happy!
Do you have similar celebrations?

TOP 3 FACTS YOU PROBABLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE HERMITAGE

1. It was extremely difficult to get a ticket to the Hermitage till 1852 – it is the year when the Hermitage became a public museum. Before that even famous Russian poet and writer who is well known in the whole world – Alexander Pushkin – couldn’t enter the building and enjoy the exhibition. Because until 1852 only noble people dressed in tuxedoes and formal dresses could be shown around this outstanding art collection. There were some occasions when noble people dressed in everyday clothes didn’t manage to pass “face control”. By the way, in 1832 Pushkin’s best friend, who was an Emperor’s son teacher, got him an indefinite pass to this museum.

2. There are over 50 cats “working” in the Hermitage. In the 18th century, when the Winter Palace (now it is one of the main buildings of the Hermitage) was under construction rats started to attack the Winter Palace, and Empress Elizabeth commissions some cats from Kazan. Those cats saved the palace, and when later on another Empress – Catherine II – moved in she decided to keep the cats (though she didn’t like them), and since then it became a tradition to keep these pets on the territory of the palace. Nowadays, they live in the basement of the Hermitage and they are probably more famous than some masterpieces on the walls of the museum! People send them gifts (treats mostly) and write books about them. Once a month there is an opportunity to take an Hermitage Cat home, but it is already another story.

3. In the beginning of the 20th century, there was a huge collection of cars in the Hermitage. It used to belong to Emperor Nicolas II, but after the Revolution in 1917, this collection disappeared.

Drawbridges are very famous in Saint Petersburg, Russia. So are the white nights. I filmed this footage of the drawbridge opening back in June when there was the season of white nights in St. Petersburg. This video shows you the whole process of the opening of a middle span of the bridge and right in between two parts of this span you will see the wonderful Smolny cathedral! This bridge is not as famous as the Palace Bridge but the view here is outstanding!

You can just walk along Nevsky Avenue and suddenly your sight is caught by a lantern....but not just an ordinary one!
Just take a look at how beautiful and unusual it is😍

TOP 3 THINGS TO DO IN ST. PETERSBURG IN ONE DAY

If I were in St. Petersburg for the first time and I had just one day, what would I do?

1. Take a walking tour of the main street in St.. Petersburg - Nevsky Prospect (or Nevsky Avenue). There are so many wonderful places around! And there is my own "golden spot" there. It is a place from where you can see 3 main sights of the city at once! I will tell more about it in my next video on YT.

2. Go to Peterhof. If it is summer then visiting Peterhof is the must. The impression which this residence leaves is impossible to describe. Over 150 fountains, shore of the Gulf of Finland and breathtaking history - all these things are waiting for you there.

3. Take a boat ride to see the drawbridge opening. I used to start my guiding career as a boat tour guide. And it means I have done over 1000 boat tours! And believe me, everytime our motorboat would enter the waters of the wonderful Neva River I would stand up to see the beauty of it! So amazing the view from the boat is! But the night boat ride to the drawbridges is absolutely unbelievable. There is usually no information given during the night boat tours, they are meant as a relaxing ride, but it is still worth doing! I saw people crying when the bridges were opening, because the view was so impressive!

Those are thing I would do in St. Petersburg if I were a first time visitor. What would you do?

17 June 1777 - this is the date when the first stone of this wonderful church was laid. This is not just another beautiful church in St. Petersburg. This church used to be one of the favourite places of Russian Empress Catherine the Great. It was her who commissioned this fascinating and airy construction. And the nema of this construction is the Chesme Church.

There is a legend in the city: people say that the place where the church stands now, was exactly the place where Empress got the news that Russian fleet triumphed in Chesme battle during the Russian-Turkish war. So, the Chesme Church is an architectural monument dedicated to that victory

24/05/2020

Today there is a big anniversary celebrated in St. Petersburg. 120 years ago on the 24th of May one of “three naval goddesses of Russia” – the legendary Aurora Cruiser was launched. The last Russian tsar – Nicolas II, his family and many battleships located in the waters of Neva River welcomed the Aurora with multiple artillery volleys.

To be honest this cruiser was not an extraordinary one. It was equipped with just 8 cannons of main caliber, which could fire 10 times per minute. It’s speed limit was 19 miles (37 km) per hour. For example, Titanic was 5 times more high-powered than Aurora. It didn’t seem to have a chance to become a legend, but it did! It’s baptism of fire happened on the 14 May 1905 during Tsushima Battle that was a disaster for Russian fleet. Out of 39 Russian battleships 21 were down, 7 – captured. Nevertheless, Aurora was amongst the survivors.

However, it became a legend a bit later. On 25 October 1917, there was a blank shot fired from Aurora’s cannon, and it was a signal to attack the Winter Palace during the Great October Revolution. Since that time, every single person learnt the name of this cruiser.

Aurora was sent for an eternal post in 1948. Since that time it is moored next to the Nakhimov Naval School by Petrogradskaya Embankment. A department of the Naval Museum opened its doors on board of Aurora. Many famous people were honored to visit this museum: Yuri Gagarin and Margaret Thatcher were amongst them.

Visiting the museum you might discover a lot of peculiar details from the naval life on the battleships. For example, I was surprised to find out, that beds on this cruiser weren’t bolted on the floor, the were more like hammocks. And that had a clear purpose. When the side of the cruiser was hit with a shell, navies rolled their beds and corked up the holes! Isn’t it genius?

I've had a strange dream today. It seemed that St. Petersburg was moved to some other planet. And instead of people it was inhabited by fluffy huge cats🤣 I think, reading M. Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita" influenced mehr a bit😀
By the way, here is an interesting fact: there is a small planet 220 million kilometers far from St. Petersburg. It was discovered in 1968 and it carries the name "Leningrad" (which is the previous name of St.Petersburg).

19/05/2020

At this very moment, daily life of Saint Petersburg is excessively far from what it used to be a year ago. I can recall days when lively events, admiring people, and local history, beauty and mysteries alluring and fascinating permeated the city. Now events and people disappeared from the streets. Saint Petersburg is deserted: every signboard, which used to shine so brightly enticing passers-by into walking in and experiencing charms of the local life is now disengaged and barely visible; every door, which used to be wide-open showing famous “Russian hospitality” is now properly closed. Yes, the world has changed. But there are things that despite all the circumstances don’t abandon the city of Peter the Great. One of them is its picturesqueness. When I manage to look outside, I feel really amazed because I see how spring is transforming grey and lonely streets of St. Pete into blossoming and vital masterpieces. There is a place in the historical center, which is called “the Garden of Friendship” – one of a few places where you can find cherry blossom in this megalopolis. Cherry blossom – a tangible proof that the city is still alive – recently has erupted into an ecstasy of my favorite shades of pink. Isn’t it lovely?

Hello friends!

It was a long time you haven't heard anything from me + now it is a crazy time in the world and we all have to stay at home to be safe. I really hope that you and your families are alright.
But I really miss St. Petersburg. You know, this is a strange feeling, I live in this city but I miss it, because I can't take a walk along its streets. A while ago I saw an idea of making online tours around the cities and I liked it! But I was afraid as well because I have never tried to create videos and I had no idea how to do it. Nevertheless today I want to introduce to you my first online tour (isolation edition). In this video I will tell you about couple of interesting places in the city.

I hope this video with make your days a bit brighter. And of course if you like the video, please, let me know and share it with your friends.
Love,
your guide Anastasia

Catharine Palace in Tsar's Village is almost empty in winter. No queues, no crowds, no need to hurry.
Just beauty. And it feels like it is created for you only.
In summer people sometimes have to queue for up to 7 hours to get in (if they did not book tickets beforehand). But now you'll need just couple of seconds ❤
