“I literally s**t into my balls a few days ago. That was just bonus, tho. Gnarly fever, wracking cough and aches for 4 days. Then firehose. Thought I might have to medi vac. Was so dehydrated I didn’t p*e for 2 days. I wrote out a mini retirement post. lol.”

- Text sent November 8th, 2024 while wallowing in filth on the deck of a long haul ferry somewhere off the coast of Papua.

This ordeal spooked me. I’ve had my share of travel illnesses, and I feel great now, but I’m going to honor a plea I made with myself during the drama. My body needs a change.

Thanks to the finest friends and superb clients, I’ve been on the road or destination guiding essentially non-stop since May 2021. It’s become a fish filled dream come true of a life. Y’all are the best.

A lil striper fishing next week and then I’m hitting the gym and editing footage til February. An off-season is calling, baby.

I spent the start of November sick as dog, but against all odds my body rallied and I actually fished this new area in West Papua the past few days. And it absolutely slaps. My gosh.

Right now, we’re working whatsapp to see if the ongoing fuel shortage will mean an early end to the adventure or if I can finesse a few more days of angling (and still make it back in time to cheer when our Dawgs maul the vols)

Here’s to a few more days of fly fishing for bonefish, triggers and giant trevally! Gotta believe!

Back to the jungle tonight, baby!

We start with a week of fly fishing for Red Kaloi and then we will head up river in search of Mahseer. A 50lb blue Mahseer is dancing in my dreams.

I decided on the flight over I’m going to attempt a tan as my new years resolution. A month in the jungle seems like a good opportunity. I’ll keep y’all updated.

Off the grid until January 22.

After our time here in Borneo, it’s
a short Singapore stopover and then, fish god willing, we will head to Laos to chase wolf barb. Gotta believe!!

Full circle moment right now as Jeff Currier has been a massive inspiration for my fly fishing travels for years and now we are about to embark on our first expedition together. We are heading into the jungle here in Kalimantan, Indonesia to chase after the majestic Red Kaloi. Off the grid until December 4. Gotta believe!

I just posted a fish journal blog on the Kaniak site covering my first trip here earlier this year. I got all fired up editing the journal this week, hopefully you enjoy reading it.

Rainbow trout fishing on the main river kicks into gear for week 10 of guiding in Alaska. Not to be outdone, the silver salmon fishing remains stellar throughout the week.

Reptile Rob closes out a tough first day with a personal best.

We hit the creek early and paddle hard. The water is higher than the tide table would suggest and cold. So very cold. We work across the mangroves, spooking a few, aiming for the oceanside flat in hopes of warmer temps on the low tide.

Oceanside, I watch a small shark cruise by. And then a splash. The shark has spooked a monster bone. And in turn, spooked itself. The chunk waddles to the edge of casting range. I land the improved bunny butters nearby. The bone turns and pounces on it. But nothing happens on the slow hookset. I strip and grab its attention again. Another pounce. But nothing. This time it spooks. Pain. The new fly variation is now 1 for 2 and quickly retired.

We paddle back to the mangroves for the evening flood. Dragging the yaks across a skinny flat I spy a tailer. Rob ditches his yak and gets into position. Kyle and I watch with high hopes. Rob connects and chaos ensues in tight quarters.

The personal highlight of BTT’s science symposium last week was sitting next to Bahamas bonefish legend Ansil Saunders for dinner. I lobbed every question I could think of at him, and I learned a few new tricks. My favorite exchange of the night:

Me - “What’s your favorite fly?”
Ansil - “Presentation”

There’s a fantastic film about Ansil and his life called Mighty Waters. I highly recommend you watch it.

A great event with great people by a great organization. Looking forward to the next one in three years! Thank you !!

Yucatán Oct recap, day 1. It was a glorious day to roam the beaches the man who wrote the book on fly fishing the Yucatán. Conditions were fantastic, the bonefish and tarpon happy, and the permit nowhere to be found.

It was down to the buzzer for the Welsh Dragon to face grab his first tarpon after jumping a fat one oceanside mid day. Luckily, Nicks guide skills won out and a few came to hand as the sun dipped below the lagoon.

Thanks for the knowledge and hospitality amigo!
