The lovely town of Ennis (not just MY opinion - they are Tidy Town winners!) is home to the remains of a friary that has been designated a National Monument of Ireland.⁣

Just down the road from the great shops, restaurants and pubs is the old Ennis Friary, which has stood on this spot since 1240. ⁣
⁣
In fact, the town was built up around the Friary, an important centre of learning and well renowned throughout Europe, where people from all over came to study and pray.⁣

If you turned at Dublin City Hall onto Castle Street, you would immediately spot the gated entrance for Dublin Castle. You might ask, “Is this really it?” because from this view it looks more like barracks or a government building, rather than a castle.⁣
⁣
But I can quite assure you that it is indeed a castle, and the photo I chose shows the more castle-y looking outside view.⁣
⁣
Dublin Castle is where our stately events and inaugurations take place, and it is considered to be one of the most important buildings in Irish history.⁣
⁣
My passengers that have taken any of the castle tours return to me with rave reviews of the entertaining and informative tour guides. It’s a good area to visit, too, with a wide selection of restaurants, pubs and shops nearby.⁣

If this was your first visit to Ireland or Europe and you had never seen a castle before, Cahir Castle is likely exactly how you would have pictured one in your mind.⁣

It is one of the largest and best preserved of all our castles, which is why it is frequently chosen to be used in movies and TV shows. I’m sure the folks in that wee town have seen a number of celebrities over the years!⁣

The Guinness Storehouse is a popular tourist visit in Dublin, but just a bit further down the street is another fascinating and more intimate experience that I highly recommend.⁣

Just look for the beautiful St. James Church with the glass steeple.⁣

Pearse Lyons Distillery has an award winning tour where you’ll not only learn about the small batch whiskey that they distill, but also about coopering, the connection with the church and its ties to the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, and what they have learned from the 800 year old graveyard on site.⁣

On one of my that I used to do, we would make the beautiful drive up to see this incredible retired mine that has been turned into a fascinating visitor centre. ⁣

I’ve heard from many of my passengers about their own family histories of working in the coal mines in the US and Australia, and hearing it first hand from a veteran Irish coal miner is a moving experience that you’ll never forget.⁣

There is a reason we have developed health and safety protocols in every industry. These coal miners gave their lives to provide for their families and keep their wee communities going.⁣

If you have ever visited Dublin, you likely saw Christ Church Cathedral somewhere in your sightseeing. Remember, it’s the one with the arch bridge over the road? And the one with the petrified cat and mouse inside?⁣

For most of the tours I do that go to Galway, my passengers get a walking tour around this small city. I feel sorry for those other people who opt to wander and explore, because often they get distracted by shops, pubs and buskers and they don’t make it as far as Galway Cathedral.⁣

This iconic building of the Galway skyline is a short walk from city centre, and well worth the stroll. Inside it is decorated in multiple shades of Connemara marble and I seriously just want to roll around on the floor every time I go in.⁣

Ross Castle, Co. Kerry⁣

Killarney is such a popular destination in Ireland - even the Irish take their holidays there! Inside the Killarney National Park and minutes from city centre, is one of the most picturesque castles you definitely want to see. ⁣
⁣
Ross Castle was built in the 15th century by the clan O’Donoghue Mór (Ross) and it sits right on the banks of the lower lake, Lough Leane in Killarney National Park. It is surrounded by a defensive wall, with two flanking towers, which helped it become the last castle in Munster to surrender during the Cromwellian invasion in 1652.⁣
⁣
The castle is operated by the Office of Public Works and there is a great free display inside explaining the history of the castle, with drawings and models. In normal summer times, guided tours of the castle are also available.⁣

I sat mesmerised here one afternoon.⁣
⁣
I had brought my tour group down from the Cliffs of Moher for some lunch and was enjoying a bowl of hearty Irish stew at the bar, watching the barman as he worked.⁣
⁣
Not only was he juggling drink orders for a packed house, he was also cashiering meals for the other tour groups and regular patrons as they left. I’ll bet it barely took a minute for each client.⁣
⁣
I suppose when you run a hugely popular pub/restaurant close to the most visited tourist attraction in Ireland, you get really good at what you do.⁣

I’ve always felt that the Blarney Woolen Mills Hotel is a great place to base an Irish holiday out of, and one visit I would most definitely do for the sheer joy of it while there, is visit Fota Wildlife Park.⁣⁣

It’s an incredible experience for all ages as you walk among the animals, learn a thing or two about them and soak up some soul-boosting nature.⁣⁣

Sure, I know, you have such things over in the States, but this one is on Fota Island and you can also see a beautiful stately home and gardens, or play a round of golf while you’re there. It makes for a fun-filled day.⁣⁣

The TV show Game of Thrones has done wonders for tourism and one of the most iconic images from the show was the Dark Hedges, a tree-lined road in Co. Antrim.⁣

GOT fans know it as the King’s Road and it holds what remains of the 150 beech trees that were planted to create an impressive entrance to Gracehill House about 250 years ago.⁣

You probably missed this when you visited Killarney.⁣

When my tour passengers have free time in Killarney, they make a beeline for the cool pubs, eating spots and incredible gift shops.⁣
⁣
Behind the walls of the National Park however, are some of Killarney’s most amazing treasures.⁣
⁣
One such is Muckross Abbey, an architectural beauty that dates back to the 1400s, which has a well preserved 500+ year old yew tree at its centre.⁣
