Traveling with a Minor Child? Don't Skip This Important Step!

If you're traveling internationally with a child and any of these apply:

✈️ The child is not your own
✈️ You’re a single parent traveling alone
✈️ Your child has a different last name

You MUST carry the right documentation:

✅ A notarized letter from the child's parent(s) giving you permission to travel
✅ A notarized letter from the other parent if you share custody
✅ Court documents proving sole custody if the other parent is not involved
✅ Birth certificate if your child has a different last name

While it's not always checked, it does happen. A colleague recently had a client nearly denied boarding because her daughter had a different last name. She scrambled to find proof, but the gate agent could have refused her.

Don't leave it to chance—be prepared!

Does everyone have their Real ID?

On May 7th, 2025, US travelers MUST be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.

If you do not have the enhanced driver's license, you can use the following:

• Passport book or Passport Card

• DHS Trusted Traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)

• Permanent resident cards

• Department of Defense IDs

• Federally recognized tribal-issued photo ID

• U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential

• Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

DO MINORS NEED A REAL ID TO TRAVEL DOMESTICALLY?

No, the TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States.
