The history of climbing at Devils Tower is fascinating and has evolved over the years. As mentioned, the first ascent was made by local ranchers William Rogers and Willard Ripley in 1893 using a wooden ladder. This, however, was not a technical climb.

The first technical climb of Devils Tower was led by Fritz Wiessner in 1937. Wiessner was a German-born American mountaineer who played a significant role in advancing rock climbing techniques in the United States. Accompanied by Lawrence Coveney and William P. House, Wiessner led the climb without the use of any bolts, relying solely on the natural features of the rock and placing only pitons for protection, a remarkable achievement for the time. This climb established what is now known as the Wiessner Route, a 5.7 grade climb that is still popular among climbers today.

Wiessner's ascent marked the beginning of modern rock climbing at Devils Tower. In the years that followed, several new routes were established, and climbing techniques continued to evolve. Today, there are over 220 established climbing routes on Devils Tower, ranging from 5.7 to 5.13 in difficulty.

Climbing at Devils Tower has not been without controversy. The monument holds significant cultural and spiritual importance to several Native American tribes, and some believe that climbing the tower is disrespectful. In 1995, the National Park Service implemented a voluntary climbing closure during the month of June, which is a culturally significant time for many tribes. This closure is still in effect today, and many climbers choose to respect it by not climbing the tower during this time.

Over the years, Devils Tower has become a mecca for climbers from all over the world, and its history is a testament to the evolution of rock climbing as a sport. From the early days of wooden ladders to the modern era of free climbing, Devils Tower continues to captivate and challenge those who venture to its heights.

Campgrounds to Scan with CampScanner
⛺ Fruita Campground: This is the primary developed campground in the park and is located in the Fruita Historic District. The campground has a scenic setting with beautiful views of the surrounding red cliffs. It offers both RV and tent sites, and some sites have shade from mature fruit trees. Fruita Campground is open year-round, and it operates on a first-come, first-served basis from November through March. However, reservations are strongly recommended during the peak season (April to October) due to high demand.

⛺ Cedar Mesa Campground: This campground is located at the park's southern boundary and is more primitive compared to Fruita Campground. It provides a more secluded and quiet camping experience, ideal for those seeking a back-to-nature experience. The campground offers basic amenities, including pit toilets and picnic tables. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis and may be closed during the winter months.

📍The Redwoods

Did you know?

1️⃣ The iconic coastal redwoods, also known as Sequoia sempervirens, are the tallest living trees on Earth, reaching staggering heights of up to 380 feet (115 meters)!

2️⃣ The redwood forests, primarily found along the northern California coast, are home to some of the oldest living organisms on our planet. These ancient giants have graced the Earth for over 2,000 years, standing as witnesses to history and time itself.

3️⃣ The bark of redwood trees can grow to be more than a foot thick, acting as a natural shield against fires, insects, and even fungi. This remarkable adaptation contributes to their longevity and resilience, enabling them to withstand the test of time.

4️⃣ Redwood trees have a unique ability to absorb and store large amounts of carbon dioxide, making them crucial allies in the fight against climate change. Their immense size and longevity make them exceptional carbon sinks, helping to mitigate the effects of greenhouse gases.

🌿 As we venture into the depths of the redwood forest, we are humbled by the grandeur of nature and reminded of the importance of preserving these incredible ecosystems for future generations.
